THOMAS J. DUDLEY, OF DALLAS, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO A. L. GRACEY, OF DALLAS COUNTY, .TEXAS DRA'FT-EQUALIZER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 28, 1920.
Application filed September 2, 1919. Serial No. 320,978.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. DUDLEY, a Citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas andV State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Equalizers1 of Which the following is a specifioation.
This invention relates to neW and useful improvements in draft appliances and particularly to that type designed for tractors.
The invention Will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanying draWings, in which an example of the invention is shown, and Wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan View of an appliance constructed in accordance With this invention,
Fig. 2 is a detail in elevation of one end of the evener beam, Y
Fig. 3 is a cross-Sectional detail of the right hand end of the evener beam and draft bar, and r Fig. Li is a detail of one of the block connections.
In .the drawings the numeral 1 designates the tongue of an agricultural implement and 2 the aXle or other relatively fixed trans- Verse part of the implement. At the end of the tongue a clevis 3 is mounted and provided With the usual bolt 4. An evener beam 5 is mounted in the clevis.
The beam 5 has the greater portion of its length projecting on the left hand side of the tongue While a comparatively short portion of its length projects on the right hand side. The normal position of the beam being at substantially right angles to the tongue. At the left hand end of the beam a draft bar 6 Visconnected thereto by a pivoted link 7. Adjacent the center of the evener beam a pulley block or connection 8 is pivoted thereto. This block carries a pulley 9,. as shown in detail in Fig. 4. Another pulley block or connection 10 is fastened at the intersection of the parts 1 and 2 so as to lie in the angle 'between said parts on the left hand side of the tongue 1.
' This blockcarries a pulley 11. A flexible 11 across the tongue to the right hand end of the beam 5.
Adjacent the right hand extremity of beam 5 a transverse slot is cut in Which are mounted pulleys 14': and 16, as shown in detail in Fig. 2. The draft bar 6 also has a transverse slot 6' cut adjacent its right hand extremity Wherein a pulley 15 is mounted. The flexible connection passes over the outer side of pulley 11 to pulley 15 around same to pulley 16 and around same back to draft bar 0 to Which it is secured in the eye 17 of a bolt 18, as shown in detail by Fig. 3. The connection 12 thus forms a loop A about the pulleys 15 and 16. It Will be seen that the flexible connection 'and block and tackle assume the form of a truss the base of Which is made by the beam 5.
A clevis 19 is pivoted to the journal bolt 20 of pulley 15 adjacent the right hand end of the draft bar 6 and has a hitching link 21 secured thereto. Another clevis 22 is pivoted to a bolt 23 adjacent left hand Aend of the draft bar 6 and has a hitching link 211 secured thereto. The hitching links 21 and 24 eXtend forward of the draft bar and converge to a central point of union Where a coupling 25 suitable for hitching to a traction engine or a tractor is secured. From the foregoing description it Will be seen that I have provided a draft appliance for connecting the tractor and Wheeled implement, Which draft appliance is of simple construction and may be installed in place quickly and conveniently. and readily collapsed When not in use. Further, the element 6 may partake of restricted longitudinal movements With relation to the element 5, Whereby the appliance possesses a suitable degree of flexibility, to compensate for the relative movements of the tractor and Wheeled implement, When traveling over theground.
It 'Will be noted that the draft bar With its left hand end pivoted to the left hand end of the evener beam at a fixed distance from the latter, and its right hand end connected With the flexible connection Which allows it to move relatively to the evener beam, Will equalize the draft and compensate for the swing of the draft bar.
lVhat I claim, is:
1. In a draft equalizer, the combination With the draft connection of a Vehicle, of a transverse evener beam pivotally attached evener beam, a pulley block pivoted to the long portion of the evener beam adj acent the center of said beain, a second pulley block' connected With a fixed point on the vehicle in rear of the evener beam, a fiexible connection having one end securedto one of the pulley blocks and passing between said blocks in several strands, the other end of the flexible connection extending to the eX- treniity of the short portion of the evener beam and formed into a loop, a pulley in the short end of the evener beam over Which the looped end of the connection passes, a pulley disposed in the free end of the draft bar and Within the looped end of the connection around Which. the latter passes, and a draft connection attached to 'the ends of the draft bar.
2. In a draft equalizer, the combination With the draft connection of a Vehicle, of a transverse evener beain pivotally attached to said draft connection at a point Whereby `,the center of said beam, a second it is divided into a long portion and a short portion, a draft bar pivotally attached to the extremity of thevlong -portion of the evener beam, a pulley block pivoted to the long portion of the evener beam adjacent pulley on the block connected With a fiXed point flexible Vehicle inrear of the evener beam, a
connection having one end secured to one of the pulley blocks and passing between said blocks in several strands, the other end of the flexible connectionv extending to the extremity of the short portion of the evener beani and formed into a loop, a guide pullej)T in the short end of the .evener beam over `Which the loopedend of the connection passes, a pulley disposed in the free end of the draft bar and Within the looped end of the connection around Which the latter passes, a second pulley disposed in the short end ofy the evener beani and Within the loopedend of the connection fixed in the draft bar, and a draft connection attached to the ends of the draft bar.
In testimony7 Whereof I afiix my signature.
' THOMAS J. DUDLEY.
