WEED-BURNING CAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. a, lace.
Application filed March 18, 1909. Serial No. 484,248.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. ONEALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at San J ose in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in eed-Burning Cars, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an imaroved weed burnin car for use in connection with the burning or destroying of weeds or vegetation within and along side of the tracks of a railway, and the object is to arrange for the swinging of the burning appliance from one end of the car to the other, and by so doing avoiding the necessity and saving the time required in having to switch the car or place the same onto a turn table in order to reverse the position of the weed burning appliance.
A weed, burning train comprises a motor car, as for instance, a locomotive and tender, and a weed burning car coupled thereto, the motor car being in advance of the weed burning car. In the making up of the weed burning train, with the weed burning car as at present constructed, should the engine or motor car approach the weed burning car toward the end carrying the weed burning appliance, it is required that the weed burning car run onto a switch or turn table to reverse the position thereof before the train can be made up for travel on the road. The necessity for such shifting of the weed burning car, is ofttimes the occasion of considerable loss in the making up of a train. Again, on reaching the end of a road, under the present arrangement of the weed-burning car, the weeds or vegetation cannot be consumed for a distance from the end equal to the length of the train, for as the weed burning car is at the end of the train, the burning appliance is held a distance equal to the length of the train from the end of the road. To consume the weeds for such length of the trackway, it is required that the position of the weed burning car be reversed and the same run over such portion of the trackway after the switching of the motor car or engine. By the hereinafter described construction of the weed burning car, such switching of the same is avoided and the necessity for and the time consumed by being required to place the car onto a turn table to reverse the position of the weed burning appliance carried thereby, is dispensed with.
To comprehend the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying sheets of drawings, wherein Figure l is a side View of the weed burning car with the swinging ladder or frame thereof carrying the burning appliance extended beyond one end of the car. Fig. 2 is a similar View illustrating the swinging ladder or frame swung onto the auxiliary platform of the car. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the car with the swing ladder or frame lowcred onto the auxiliary frame thereof. Fig. 4 is a similar view illustrating the position of the auxiliary platform after having been reversed and the swinging ladder or frame swung outwardly to position the burning appliance at the opposite end of the car to that disclosed by Fig. 1 of the drawings.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 is used to designate anordinary railway fiat car and 2 an auxiliary platform carried thereby, which platform is mounted for rotation relatively to the fixed platform of the car proper. Centrally, the auxiliary platform is supported by the rolls 8, which work on the circular trackway 4 secured to the central portion of the platform of the car 1, and the outer end portions of the said auxiliary platform rest on the supporting cross beams 5-5. To the said auxiliary platform is held the oil reservoir or tank 6, from which leads the supply pipe 6 for delivering oil to the feed pipe 7, which is united thereto by the swinging joint 7. The said feed pipe is carried by the swinging ladder or frame 8, hinged to one end of the auxiliary frame 2, whlch swinging ladder or frame at its outer end carries the weed burning appliance. This burning appliance comprises a plurality of oil burners 8, held within a suitable supporting frame 9, the oil burners receiving oil from the feed pipe 7.
The swinging ladder or frame 8, when in outward position, projects a distance beyond the end of the car 1, and the same is raised and lowered by means of the cables 10. These cables pass over the pulleys 10, held within the upright frame 11, carried at one end of the auxiliary frame 2, and the free ends thereof are secured to the winding drum 12, also carried by the said auxiliary frame 2.
When it is desired to reverse the position of the weed burner, rotation is imparted to the drum 12 to wind the cables 10 thereon, which gradually elevates the swinging ladder or frame 8 and draws the same inwardly and over onto the auxiliary frame 2, Fi 2 of the drawings. During the lowering of the swinging ladder or frame 8 onto the auxiliary frame, the cable 10 will work over the guide sheaves 13, the said cables unwinding from the hoisting drum 12 with the lowering of the swinging ladder or frame carrying the weed burner.
When the swinging ladder or frame 8 with the weed burner carried thereby has been lowered onto the auxiliary platform 2, the said platform is then forced around on its turn table connection with the platform of the car 1, until the swinging ladder or frame 8 is positioned at the opposite end of the car 1.. The cables 10 are then wound upon the drum 12 to elevate the swinging ladder or frame 8 and the weed burner, when the said frame 8 is lowered by a reverse rotation of the drum 12 to project beyond the end of the car 1, Fig. at. of the drawings. The position of the parts will then be the reverse of that disclosed by Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Under the described construction of the weed burner car, the burner appliance may be reverse, 6., shifted from one end of the car to the opposite end thereof, and the necessity of having to switch the car or place the same on a turn table in order to reverse the position of the weed burning appliance is obviated. A considerable time in the handling of the weed burning car is thus saved in the making up of the train, inasmuch as the delay incident to being required to switch the weed burning ear to properly position the same is avoided.
Having thus described the invention, what claimed as new and desired to be protw-ted by Letters Patent is:
1. A weed burning car, the same comprising a suitable railway car, an auxiliary platform rotatably mounted thereon, an oil res ervoir n'iounted thereon, a. swinging ladder or frame hinged to one end of the auxiliary platform, a. weed burning appliance carried at the outer end portion thereof, an oil feed pipe for delivering oil from the reservoir to the burner, and means on the auxiliary platform for raising and lowering the swinging ladder or fame and the burner appliance carried thereby.
2. A weed burning car, the same comprising a suitable railway car, an auxiliary platform rotatably mounted thereon, a swinging ladder or frame ,hinged to one end of the auxiliary platform, a weed burning appliance carried at the outer end portion thereof, and means on the auxiliary platform for raising and lowering the swinging ladder or frame and the burner appliance carried thereby.
In testimony whereof l have signed my nan'ieto this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
