TRAQK-MOVING AlPAIR/ATUSZ 1%. 8.60381... Specification of J Application filed August 11,
To allwho'm'it may concern: Be it known that 1, LAWRENCE L. :Mfifi-Ulihqlml-l', a
citijzon of the United States, residing at Ka'QEa'sIity in ;,the county of Wyandotte and State ofKanslis, have iii vented certain new anduseful Improvements in Traci? Miiving' Ap'pat'atiis, of which the following is tion.
In .many instances it becomes necessary, or desirable to shift or move a considerable length of railway tracksidewise. This may occur in construction work, and as a particular example, it may he noted that in plants .for burning ballast in the'open air, such shiftingof along length of track may be necessary every day.-
The objects of the present invention are to provide means whereby such shifting or moving of the track may be done readily and economically by suitable machinery, thereby avoiding the larger. part of the manual labor heretofore required to do such work and also less- 'ening the time required. I accomplish these objects by means of the apparatus shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of a car provided with apparatus embodying this invention, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, Fig. 3 is a modifi ation showing a winding drum for the guide or controlling cable, Fig. 4. is a detail showing-the track engaging end ,of the boom, Fig.5 shows the plate on the end of said boom, and Fig. 6 is a detail showing a plan view of the rail engaging wheels.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, 7 represents a car of any ordinary or preferred form of construction, for instance an ordinary fiat car, upon which is mounted a boom 8. This boom is preferably mounted so that it may be swung incither a vertical or a horizontal plane. For thisp'urpose it is rigidly secured to a cross beam 9, which is carried in bearings 10 and 11, and is braced-by a brace 1-2 reaching to one end of the beam. The bearings 10 and ll consist of straps which are bolted to the ear' and pass around the beam, the former is' only long enough to allow the beam to rotate therein when the boom is to be raised'or lowered, but it also acts as a-pivot to support the beam to allow for'the limitedhorizonlal swing ofthe boom. The other bearing, 11, is made considerably longer and not only allows the boom to be swung in a vertical plane, but also allows the; beam at sufiicient horizontal movement to accommodate the horizontal moveinent'of the boom. The beam is provided with bearing plates 13 where it engages with the strap 1.1, and' these plates are preferably provided with guide flanges 50.
14 which-engage with the sides of the strap 11.
- I At theouter end of the boom is attached the devices aspecifica I v I I llihllo I have found this device which engages with bnl-y oneofthe rails suHicii-nt'ior practical purposes, mes desirable to have such aniotbod of ii ill admit ofthc track being rsti sed at Letters Patent.

engage with the head of thcrail. This pivoted arrangement of the wheels is to allow the device to readily pass over any fish plates on other obstructions on the rail without danger ol'being thrown off. In order to limit .tl'iethrow of the plate 16', it is providod with two pins li) I I eh-engagowith slots 20in theplnte l5. 7 I
yet t s at attachmii" I the same time that it is being shifted sidcwiso. For instance, when the track has settled down into the moved more easily than if merely slid over. This is boom which extends across the track and carries a wheel 22 which engages with the other rail, and which is held in Contact therewith by means of a suitable spring, such as the spring 23 which bears against the slidable bearing 24. I
In order to. raise and lower the boom 8, I have provided a rope or cable 25 which is attached to the outer end thereof and which runs up over a pulley or sheave '26 on a mast 27 and down to awinding drum 28. This drum is shown with a hand crank 29, but of course it may be driven by power in any well known way.
The boom is swung in a horizontal plane by means of a second rope or cable 30 which is also attached to the outer end thereof, but which passes around a pulley or sheave 31 in the outer end of the beam 9 and then to a piston rod 32 of a power cylinder 33 which is located on the car 7. This cylinder is providecl with steam from a boiler 34 through a pipe 35. The move ment of the piston is controlled by a three way valve 36 having a handle 37, and an exhaust outlet 38. Other means mayof course be used for swinging the be used in place of the powbr cylinder.
.lVhen this apparatus is used, a locomotive pushes the can forward, and' the operator swings the end of the boom 'oiitby admitting steam into the cylinder 33,
track to be shifted toone side and as the car continues to move forward the track will be continuously shifted in advance. On account of the frequent irregularities necessary to have control of the boom and this is proyided by the power cylinder and its controlling valve. If the: operator sees that the track 'is being shifted too 7 far, he turns the valve so that the steam will be exhausted fr m the cylinder and the pressure on the boom will swing it in. He can also at any time again swing the boom out by admitting more steam to the-cylinder. After the track engaging device has been arranged, the boom may be raised and held by the cable 25 and winch '28 sothat the wheels will constantly tend to accomplished by having an arm 21 near the end of the boom, and as an example, the winding drum 39 may thereby drawing on the cable 30; This will cause the Patented July 1.
mud, it is '(lcsiralfle to raise it in order that it may be in a track and where curvature occurs, it becomes raise the track as the apparatus moves forward, thereby assisting in the operation of shifting the track. This device nniy'niso be used to swing the boom up out of the way when the apparatus is to be moved for some distance, or when another car is coupled at that end of the car which carries the boom.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A truck shifting; apparatus (comprising a car, a boom on said our for shifting the track, and ardevice at the end of said boom for engagement with both of the rails of the track.
2. In anapparatus for shifting railway tracks laterally,
the combination of :1 car, i boom mounted on said our and pivoted to s 'wing.hoth vertically iind horizoniailyp ant] m'enns for swinging said huoin horizontally while the apparatus is in operation 3. lnannemiarntns for shifting railway tracks laterally, tli'e combinaiion'of a m, a boom projecting from said car and adapted to swing both vertically and horizontally, and means for swinging said boom in either direction while the a pilraius is in operation.
i. In an apparatus for shifting trucks, the combination of a car, a beam pivoted at one end or said car, a boom secured to said IJGIHU, wheels at the end of said boom for engaging with both of the track rails, and means :01
swinging said l uom vertically and horizontally while the apparatus is in operation. I
The combination with a boom for shifting a. track, of a plate pivotefl to the free'end of said boom and supported thereby and grooved wheels carried by said plate.
6. The combination with a. boom for moving a. track, of a device pivoted to said boom and adapted for engagement with one of the track rails, a cross arm reaching to the other rail and a wheel on said arm for engagement with the last mentioned rail.
7. The combination of a car, bearing straps at the end of said ear, one of said straps being longer than the other, a beam pivotully supported by said straps, a boom carried bi f said ileum, yielding rail engaging devices at the end 01' said boom for shifting or raising the track, a cable and winding drum for raising said'boom, and :3. second cable and power cylinder for swinging said boom sidewise.
