To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY L. MINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brandon, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawmgs.

This invention relates to improvements in boxes and more particularly one especially adapted to be carried by an automobile and to contain electric batteries, tools, nuts, bolts and other small parts and the like.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical box of this character which will permit of ready access to the different chambers or compartments of its interior and which may contain all parts and tools necessary to repair ordinary breakdowns which may occur on an automobile trip.

lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved automobile tool and battery box showing it closed and the rear side of the same; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the top section of the box in its open position and the intermediate section raised; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the box with its upper and intermediate sections swung off of the bottom section to permit of access to the latter; and Fig. 4: is a transverse section through the box showing the top section in its open position in full lines and the intermediate section in its closed position in full lines and in its open position in dotted lines.

My improved box is preferably of rectangular shape and consists of a large bottom section 1 and smaller intermediate and upper sections 2, 3, which latter are independently hinged to one side wall of the section 1 by improved strap hinges whereby either one may be swung over to a horizontal position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4: of the drawings. Each of the improved hinges consists of a strap member 4 secured to the section 1 and having connected to it, as shown at 5, long and short strap members 6, 7 The long strap members 6 extend over or above the intermediate box section 2 and are secured to the top or upper section 3, while the short strap members 7 are secured to the intermediate section 2, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Suitable catches or fastening devices 8, 9 are provided for holding the sections 1, 2, 3 together in closed position, the catch 8 being adapted to unite the section 2 to the section 1 and the catch 9 being adapted to unite the section 3 to the section 2. For the purpose of relieving the hinges and the catches of strain and more effectively holding the several sections in superposed or closed position, pins 10 are provided on the edges of the sections 1 and 2 to enter sockets 11 in the edges of the sections 2, 3, respectively, as will be readily understood on reference to the drawings.

The bottom or lower section 1 has a lon itudinal upright partition 12 which divi es it into. two compartments 13, 13, the former of which is adapted to receive electric batteries and the latter of which may contain large tools, large automobile parts and the like. A diagonally arranged upright partition 14 is provided at one end of the com partment 13 to provide a triangular-shaped compartment 15 in which cotton waste may be kept.

The intermediate box section 2 is in the form of a tray having an open top and a closed bottom 16 on which latter are arranged spring clips 17 or equivalent devices for retaining upon the same small tools, such as a hammer, monkey wrench, screw driver, etc. The bottom 16 of this section is adapted to close the open top of the bottom section 1 when the box is closed. The upper section 2 is also in the form of a tray containing one or more partitions 18 which divide it into compartments 19 to receive nuts, bolts, screws, valves, rubber, cement and other small parts needed for repairing automobile machinery, wheel tires, etc. These several compartments 19 are each closed by a lid or cover 20 which is preferably hinged at one edge, as shown at 21, and held in closed position by a catch 22. Said lids or covers 20 retain the small parts in the compartment 19 when the top section 3 is swung over upon the intermediate section 2 to close the latter.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the invention provides a device of this character which will be exceedingly useful and convenient for the purpose intended. Its peculiar construction permits of ready access to its different compartments or chambers so that any tools or articles may be quickly and easily reached When needed.

- Having thus described the invention What is claimed is: r

1. A box of the character described comprising bottom, top and intermediate sections superposed and hinges uniting said sections and each having one strap secured to the bottom section and concentrically pivoted long and short straps, the long ones besecured to the top section and the short ones to the intermediate section.

' 2. A box of the character described comprising a'bottom' section with an open top, a tray forming an intermediate section, a tray forming a top section, hinges each having one strap secured to the bottom section and having long and short concentrically pivoted straps, the short straps being secured to the intermediate section or tray and the long straps being secured to the top section, whereby said intermediate and top sections may swing to a horizontal position to oneside of the bottom section, object retaining means upon the bottom of the intermediate section or tray and one or more covers or closures for retaining objects in the top section. I
