To all lwhom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDGAR BENJAMIN KERST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have in-l vented certain new and useful Improvements in Section-Liners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved section liner, and more particularly adapted for use in connection with a drafting machine, such as known to the trade as the Universal drafting machine, but is in no wise limited to this particular machine.
rThe object of thc invention is to provide improved step by step operating means for the straight edge, whereby the latter ivill be moved a uniform distance with each operation, so as to exactly position the section lines relative to each other.
A further object is to provide improved means of this character, which are capable of wide adjustment, so as to move the straight edge the desired distance at each operation for section lining.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying' drawings, Figure 1, is a broken plan view illustrating the applin cation of my improvements. Fig. 2, is a view in section on the -line 2 2 of Fig. 1 through a drawing board showing` my improvements in elevation. Fig. 3, is an enlarged plan view of the device. Fig. 4, is a view in longitudinal section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3, and Figs. 5 and 6 are views in cross section on the lines 5 5 and 6 6 respectively of Fig. 8.

My improved device comprises a rod 4 supported at it-s ends in sheet metal brackets 5, which latter are clamped around the rods by clamping bolts 6. The brackets are each made with outwardly projecting feet 7, having screw threaded pins 8 adjustable in said feet, and made with sharpened inner ends so as to be projected into the drawing board and support my improvements in L place.
positioned across and secured to the straight edge 2 by means of screws 10. This frame is provided with upturned ends 11, having openings 12 to receive the rod 4, and slide freely thereon. The frame is also made with an upturned perforated ear 13 to receive a screw threaded adjusting rod 14, mounted in an opening in one upturned end 11, and projecting throughthe opening in ear 18, and is provided with a milled head 15 on one end and nut16 on its other end, so as to securely hold the rod in place.
p AV sleeve17 is mounted to slide upon the rod 14, and is fixed to a lever 18, the latter having an opening 19 mounted upon rod 4, and a milled adjusting nut 2() is located on rod 14 between the lever 18 and the ear 13, so as to assist in the adjustment of parts as will more fully herein-after appear. A bent lever 21 is also provided with an opening 22 to receive rod 4, and has a bifurcated lower end 28 straddling rod 14. A coiled spring 24 surrounds rod 4 between levers 18 and 21 and exerts pressure on the lever 21, so as to compel the same to clamp upon the rod and hold the frame against accidental movement.
The operation of this portion of my improvements is as follows: l/Vhen the operator grasps levers 21 and 18 and forces them toward each other, the lever 18 will move toward lever 21, the latter clamping on the rod 4. This movement is limited by the end of sleeve 17 engaging lever 21, and when the levers are released, lever 18 will hold, while lever 21 and the frame 9 carrying the straight edge 2, will be forced to the left by means of the spring 24, until the head 15 engages the upturned end 11 of frame 9. It will thus be seen that the length of movement at each operation can be regulated by adjusting the sleeve 17 on rod 14, and by positioning the nut 20.
To prevent any accidental retrograde movement of the frame, I have provided a clamping lever 25, having its lower end contracted and positioned Within an opening 26 in frame 9. This lever 25 is provided with an opening 27 adapted to clamp around rod 4, and a spring 28 located between an upturned end l1 and the lever 25 exerts pressure on the latter, so as to compel it to clamp the rod and prevent accidental movement of the frame. When it is desired to return the frame to its former position, it is necessary to grasp this lever and press it toward the end of the frame and hold it, while the frame is being moved backward A great many slight changes might be made inv the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of theV claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a device of the character described, the combination with a supporting rod, a frame mounted to move upon said rod, clamping levers connected with said frame and mounted on the rod, a spring between said clamping levers, a screw threaded rod supported in the frame, a sleeve on one of said clamping levers adapted to engage the other and limit the movement of said levers toward each other, and means for adjusting said sleeve on said rod.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a supporting rod, a frame mounted to move upon said rod, clamping Vlevers connected with said frame and mounted on the rod, a spring between said clamping levers, a screw threaded rod supported in the frame, a sleeve on one of the combination with a supporting rod, of a Y frame mounted to move upon said rod,
and mounted lon the rod, a spring between said clamping levers, an adjusting rod supported in the frame, a sleeve Xed on one of said clamping levers adjustable on the rod, and adapted to limit the movement of said clamping levers toward each other, a milled head on said adjusting rod, and a clamping levers connected with said frame v milled adjusting nut on said rod back 0f the sleeve, whereby said sleeve may be adjusted on the rod to adjust the length of the movement of the frame.
