i To all it may concerrt:
- Bristle-Dryin a machine forthis large-quantity of Be .it known that I,EnN1;1s'r R. ztn'mi, a citizen of the Un'itedStates, and a resident of Toledo, in'the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and, Improved Machine, of which the fol? lowing is a fu clear, and exactdescription.
' k This invention relates to drying machines,
and more particularly to a drying machine the urpose of which'is to dry bristles;
T e object of thein-vention is to produce purpose which can treat a ristles, and which operates in connection with a drying current of hot :air. The bristles; are treated in such a way that they are turned over' and over so 1 that they become uniformly exposed to the heat during the drying process.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be fig'ures' Figure 1 is a plan of a drying machine constructed according tomy invention, a
portion of the-same being, broken away so as to expose the interiorarrangement; Fig. 2
' .is a vertical section taken on the line 22 of I 1 re of 1; and Fi 3 is a vertical section-taken on the line 3-- of Fig. 2, certain parts hein shown in elevation.
eferring more' particularly to the parts, resents tlie case of the machine WhlCh lS x a form, consisting of vertical side plates 2, 3, a rear wall 4, and a forward wall 5. These walls'are all secured on angle iron 3. Near the ends ofthe case, substantial y recta 'ular frames '8 and 9 are mounte As in mated in Figz2, these'fra- mes 8 and 9 are provided with inwardly projectin brackets 10 having' rollersl'l, and these rol "ers afi'ordsuppjorts' and operate as guides for annular heads 13 of a tumbling barrel or cylinder 14. The body of this cylinder is formed of wire gauze of suitable mesh, constituting a pervious wall, and the cylinder is njal in cross'section, as shown in Fig.
P y 9 .2. fins polygonal form arises from the fact that thexwire gauze of the cylinder 14 is attached to longitudinally. disposed ribs or' Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed January 2, 1809. Serial Io. 470,8 63.
rods 15.
had to the accompany ing drawings formin a part of this specification, in which 'simi-ar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts inall the 'a delivery outlet 32.
frames 6- and. the casing is provided with a suitable. ottom or floor 7 as shown in-Fi nnrsrnn-nnrmo'uacmnn. p Q r Patented Nov. 2, 1909.
-These ribs 15 are disposed an equal distance apart and are arranged near the mner edges of'the rings so as to form a skeleton or. framework for the cylinder or barrel, as will be readily understood.
. Under the cylinder. 14,-1 rovide axsteam coil 16, and at e'ach side 0 the cyli der I provide racks 17 and 18, which racks are provided with cross arms 19. These cross arms sup ort the steam coils'20 and 21, as shown. 11 order to ive the frames 8 and 1 9 rigidity, they are onnectedby horizontal stay rods 22. In the side wall 2, a fan 23 is provided, and a similar fan 24 is provided at an opening in the op ite wall. The fan 23 is in an elevated position, and adjacent to it there is '25 which directs the air downwardly romi the fan through the steam coils 20 and rovided a uide plate or a ron through the gauze wall of the cylinder. As. indicated the lower edge of the apron 25 is located quite near to the wall of the cylinder. The fan 24 is arranged soas to blow air through the steam coil 21 and this fan is disposed near the floor, as shown. Over the steam coils 21, a horizontal uide plate or apron 26 is provided which irects the air from this fan into the left side of the cylinder, as shown. X I
Over the cylinder and extending longitudinally thereof, there is provided an elongated hood 27. The' walls of'this hood conver e upwardly and the hood is connected wit a tubular neck 28 which leads up 7 through the cover 29 of the case and connects with an elbow 30 which 0 rates as an intake for the exhaust fan 31, w ich fan has This fan has a horizontal shaft 38 which is adapted to be driven continuously by a belt 34.. This belt runs over from a countershaft 85' which is mounted upon suitable brackets 36 on the cover of the case. From this shaft 36 belts 37 extend" downwardl and ass around pulleys 38- and 39 which rive e fans 23 and 24, res ctively. The shaft 35 isprovided with a lt 40 which drives a worm shaft 41. 4 This. worm shaft exten s horizontally through thecase, as shown in ig. 1,and near its middle:
point it is provided with a worm '42. This worm meshes with a worm wheel 43 which is formed on one of the ring heads 13. From] this arrangement 'it should be understood I, that when'the wormshaft is rotated the tumbling barrel or cylinder will be rotated at a slow speed.
'35 I The'sha 1 shaft brackets=53 which are similarsto-the' vided with cross arms 44, an arms, a
. The annular headsor rin s 13 are proin these cross icker'shaft 45 is rotatably mounted. This picker shaft extends longitudinally tl rou hout the entire length of the cylinder an is. rovided at intervals along its le th with rigidly attached picker arms which is driven continuousl byja tWlStGd belt 48, running overa pn ley 49 .on the I ,eountershaftfl50, said countershaft being I The front-wallo driven continuously by a belt 51 runnin" over from a' ulley 52 on the countersha 50 is. mounted on suitable brackets ":36.- ,The driving mechanism 'for the picker sh'aft45 is arranged'so. as to drive this shaft in a direction-opposite t th which the tumbling barrel1.,rotatesL the case-isprovidedwith: a pair of swinging doors 54," and the forward end-of the barrelor-'eylinderf'is provided with a removable head .55 having-suit .able? handles 56 which facilitate itsj're'm'oval.
i The .oppo'site inder or barrel the barrel, is provided Withfla ermane'ntly I attached plate or head 57. whic closesthat end of thelcylinder.
Inthe operation of the machine, the cylis charged with thewetbrisi tles and the steam is turned'on in the' steairi blowing fans or coils; The shaft 35 is then driven through the mediiimof agi lley 58 which drives the lowers 23 and'24 and at the same time rotatessthe barrel-and the pickers 46. The exhaust fan 31; is operated at v the same' time as to wLwithdraw the moistv air fromthe'u'pper wall .of the barrel and dischargethismoi'st airinto the atmos-' phere The. arrows in Fig. 2.;indicate the direction of rotation of the barreland the pickers. It will be evident that during the rotation ofIthe barrel the pickers are constantly.stirrin the bristles so'as to-overcome any ten ency'to form lumps, and
this way the bristles are' kept agitated, while the warm air from the pi ecoils is driven through the cylinder w l. At thesame time iot air is constantly risingironi the steam coil and vpassing up through thebarrelQ The rollers 11 operate to sup ort the cyline Patent,-
der" and materially" reduce t eenergy required torotate it.
Having thus described my invention, 1
