MILK-COOLER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, YVILLIAM T. MURRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clarksville, in the county of Mecklenburg and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Coolers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in milk coolers, and it consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in construction and effective for the purpose intended.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved milk cooler; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
The improved milk cooler comprises a can having a body 1 of cylindrical form pro vided with a bottom 2 secured to an in-,
wardly projecting rib 3 crimped in said body at a suitable distance from its lower end. Secured to the upper edge of said body is a dome-shaped top a formed with an upstanding circular flange 5 which provides a neck for the can. Projecting upwardly and outwardly from the front of the body 1 is a discharge spout 6, the lower end of which extends through an opening 7 in said body and has its edge notched and bent to provide radiating tongues 8 which are secured to the inner face of said body, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This construction prevents the formation of any projections or irregular surfaces within the spout and consequently permits the latter to be quickly and easily cleaned. Said spout is adapted to be closed by a stopper 9 consisting preferably of a cork plug secured to a metal disk or cap 10, which latter is connected by a chain 11 to the spout so that the stopper cannot be misplaced or lost.

15 denotes a removable cover or top for the can. Said cover has a depending flange 16 to enter the neck flange 5 and an annular outwardly extending horizontal flange or shoulder 17 to rest upon the edge of the latter. The flange 16 is of such relatively smaller diameter than the neck 5 as to provide an annular intervening air storage space or chamber to diminish the radiation of cold and absorption of heat at the top of the vessel and reduce liability of the souring of the milk from this cause. Upon its top is secured a U-shaped handle 18 and arranged in said top is an upstanding tube or nipple 19 which serves as an air vent and permits the animal heat and odors from the milk to pass out of the can when its cover is in position. Said nipple 19 is adapted to be closed by a stopper or plug which is similar to the stopper 9 and which consists of a cork body 20 secured to the metal cap 21, which latter is in turn connected by a chain 22 to the handle 18. A further advantage-of the tube or nipple 19 is that it prevents the milk from being forced out of the spout 6 when the cover is placed on the can, in the event that the latter is very full.
In using the invention, the milk is placed in the can, the cover is then placed in position on the neck of the can and the stoppers 20 and 9 are placed, respectively, in the tube 19 and the spout 6. When the can is thus closed it may be placed in cool running water, in an ice box or the like so that the milk or other contents of the same will be cooled. The construction of the device enables it to be transferred directly from the ice box or cooler to a dining table, thereby dispensing with the necessity of transferring the milk to pans, bowls, pitchers or other receptacles which expose the milk to the atmosphere and attract flies and other insects.
