To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, O'rro- B. WEDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elgin, in the county of Kane'and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eyeglass-ChainReels; and I- do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make .and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in eye glass channreels and 1s a specific 1mprovement over the construction described and claimed in my application filed July 6,

1908, Serial No. 442,209.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and compact chain reel to which eye glasses may be attached by means of a suitable fastening to the outer end of the chain and easily reeled and unreeled and latched and unlatched.

When in use, it is pinned to the garment of the wearer by an ordinary catch pin, lying parallel to and attached to the back of the device, with the guide slot and latch notch down.

With this object in view, my invention consists in the construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and claimed.

Surrounding the shaft f is a drum i provided on its outside with a spiral groove .7. This drum is hollow and is mounted on 4 heads Ia and m, the former being recessed on its inside face and projecting. over shoulder on the shaft f so as to prevent the spring 9 from getting in between said shoulder andthe inner face of thevhead 7c. The whole drum construction is mounted on the shaft 7, space being afforded within the drum for the reception of the spring g, so that the drum may revolve freely under the influence of said spring,

The means for latching and unlatching the drum will next be described.

9 represents a combined chain guide and sliding collar, which is provided with a hole at, through which and through the guide slot 6 thechain 0 passes, the hole t actin as a guide for the chain. The collar 9 is a apted to slide freely over the drum 6 between said drum and the outer case a, and is provided with a guide pin, y, projecting lnwardly from said collar and fitting into the spiral groove j on the drum. The part 3 may be lnserted into the collar 9 or may be a proj ection punched up from the collar. 1' repre- I sents another iding pm, which, however, may be omitted. As the drum 5 revolves, it causes the collar 9 to slide on account of the guide pin. Said sliding collar 9 is also provided with a latch pm z projecting outwardly and adapted, under certain conditions, to engage the latch notch u in the case a.

The operation is as follows: In the position shown in Fi 1, the parts are shown when the chain is pulled out to its full length and the drum i-latched, as happens when the eye glasses are in use. If the user wishes to have the eyeglasses reeled up until they reach the case a, he gives a short downward pull upon the chain, holding it taut, and then gives a slight upward lift. This disengages the latch pin 2 from the latch notch u in the case a, allowing the reel to wind up a portion of the chain until the latch pin 2- has passed the latch notch u. The user then releases the chain and the spring 9 rotates the drum 2', coiling up the chain in'the groove j. As the chain is reeled up the sliding collar g travels along the drum z and the latch pm z slides along in the guide slot 1) in the'case a;

This application is distlnguished from my former application above referred to in the following particulars: 1'. A case having a guide slot and latch notch, said case being provided with a finishing head on each end and a single pin for securing it to the clothing of the user. 2. A recessed head for the winding drum, fitting over a shoulder on the supportin stationary shaft. 3. A combined chain gui e and sliding collar, said collar being provided with guiding means, a hole for the chain to pass through and latching means. 4. A combined stop and chain tip and latch notch, a. spirally grooved drum revolubly mounted therein, -.a spring tending to rotate said drum in one. direction, a chain attached to said drum and a combined chain guide and sliding collar provided with means cooperating with the slot and adapted to seat in the notch in the case for preventing-the rotation of said drum, substantially as described.
