FIGURE TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 18, 1908. Serial no. 449,060.
chine so as to be operated by the mechanism of such machine when the latter is in action, and by means of which one or more figures may be set into motion simulating a dance, acrobatic feats 'or eccentric performances of any desired kind.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawin showing in perspective the application of t e device to a phonograph.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the casin of a phonograph of a known type,
- within w ich is arranged spring motor mech- 13 carryin anism for drivinga vertical shaft 2, provided with a turn table, disk or platform 3 to receive the ordinary phonographic record disk, not shown, which is secured in the usual manner to the upper end of the shaft.
In accordance with my invention, an elbow bracket ,4 is'provided upon one of its arms with an attaching plate 5 secured in any suitable manner to one of the sides of the casing, the other arm of said bracket being vertically arranged to support a substan tially U-shaped frame 6, comprising parallel vertical side bars 7 and a lower connecting cross bar 8, the latter being provided with a coupling socket 9 adapted to slip down upon the upper end of the vertical bracket arm and to be secured thereto by a set screw 10, whereby the fra me is detachably mounted upon the phonograph casing. Above the cross bar 8 the side rods of the frame are further connected by a cross bar or rod 11, from which. extends a supporting standard 12 having-at its upper end a horizontal arm an adjustin screw 14 Working in a threa ed opening therein. A plate or lat-form 15 is sup orted by said standard tween the frame bars 7 and is of suitable size and shape and formed at its ends with notches or recesses 16 to receive and'slidably engage said bars. Normally the plate-or Patented Oct. 2a, 1909. I
platform rests upon the horizontal armof the standard, but by means of the screw l t it may be adjusted vertically to suit the length of the dolls or figures, the feet of which contact with said plate or platform during'the 4 movement of said figures.
The upper ends of the frame bars} 7-Iare provided with bearings 17, which may jbe of the antifriction type, fora transverse shaft 18 provided with one or more cranks I I 19 from which are pivotally suspended-b link rods 20 one or more figures '21,'Which may be formed and dressed ftp represent dancing dolls, acrobats, animals or'm ovable figures of any desiredftype. As the'shaft rotates these figures are caused bytlieaction of the cranks and their pivotal connection therewith to move up and down'and'to'form various interesting, amusing or eccentric actions, thus simulating a dance or other' per--' formance during the playin of 'an acc ompanimnnt by the phonograp The mechanism herein shown for actuating the shaft 18 comprises a grooved igul-ley 22 mounted upon one end of said sha and connected by a belt or cord. 23 with a grooved driving pulley 24, which-latter is adapted to'peripherally contact'with the rotating platform 3 of the phonograph or the record supported thereon and to receive rotary motion therefrom, which motion is transmitted by the belt to the shaft too erate the figuresas the machine rotates t e recordand plays the tune represented there by. The pulley 24 is journaled upon one end of a supporting arm" 25 preferably formed of a pair ofspaced bars or strips, the opposite ends of which are lon 'itudi nally slotted, as at 26 for engagement'with the screws 27 mounted upon one .of the frame bars 7, which screws are adapted for the reception of clamping-nuts 28 whereby the bars are pivotally and adjustably mounted on said bars 7. The arm 25 1S stayed and reinforced by a brace 29 pivotally con nected at its inner end therewith and slotted at its outer end, as at 30, to receive a screw 31 on the bar 7 by which it is pivotally and adjustably mounted on said bar, 'sa'id screw being adapted to receive a' clamping nut 32 by which the brace may be'fixed. 1n adjusted position. By this mode of mounting the supporting arm and brace the driving pulley 25 may be vertically and horizontally adjusted to compensate for variations in the height of the table 3 above the top of the casing and to adapt said pulley to be engaged with and driven by either the table or the record supported thereon.
From the foregoing description, the construction and mode of operation of my imroved toy will be readily understood, and it will be seen that it provides a device which may be readily applied to any ordinary phonograph and driven by the mothanism thereof so as to be actuated whilethe composition is being rendered. I do not, however, limit my invention strictly to its use as an attachment for phonographs, as it may be independently employed and driven in any other suitable manner.
Having thus fully described the invention 7 what is claimed as new is:
1. The combination with a frame or casing, and a motor driven rotary disksupported thereby, of a bracket mounted 'on' cluding a friction wheel in contact with said disk.
3. In a figure toy, the combination ofa frame or casing, a motor driven rotary disk supported thereby, a bracket carried by the frame or casing, a shaft journaled on said bracket, a movable figure actuated by said shaft, a pivotally mounted arm, a friction wheel carried by the arm and driven by the disk, a brace pivoted to the arm and adjustably connected with the bracket, and a driving connection between said friction wheel and the shaft.
pulley, an adjustable, pivoted support for said drive pulley, the-latter being driven from said disk, and a belt connecting said pulleys. a
5. In a. figure toy, the combination of a frame or casing, a motor driven rotary disk supported thereby, a bracket carried by the frame or casing, a shaft journaled on said bracket, a movable figure actuated by said shaft, an arm adjustably connected with the bracket, a friction wheel carried by the arm and driven by the disk, and a driving connection between said friction wheel and the shaft.
6. In a figure toy, the combinaton of a frame or casing, a motor driven rotaryvdisk carried thereby, a bracket supported by the casin a shaft journaled on the bracket, a mova le figure actuated by the shaft, a supporting arm pivotally and slidably connected with the bracket, a friction wheel carried by the arm and driven by contact "with the disk, means for supporting the arm in adjusted position, and a driving connection between said wheel and the shaft.
In testimony whereofI afiix my signature in presence of two-witnesses.
