UNITED 'STATES HARRY A. WRIGHT, OF HILLSBORO, OHIO.
CREAMTESTING MACHINE.
lApplication filed October 8,1921. Serial No. 596,476.
To all 'who-727, it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY A. VR'IGHT, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Hillsboro, in the county ot Highlandk and State ot Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cream-Testing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to power operating mechanisms and more particularly to -a novel and improved mechanism, whereby energy may be communicated to produce rotary power' in various types of apparatus.
The primary object oit the invention resides in the construction of a power operatcommunicating power to cream testing machines and centrifugal separators and the like by mechanical power, when electric or water power cannot be readily obtained.
Another' and very important object of the invention resides in the construction of a 'mechanical power operating mechanism,
capable of being constructed of differentkinds of material and in various sizes and if so desired in the form of a toy, and one in which the parts are extremely simple in construction, easily assembled, highly eilieient in operation, practical, durable and otherwise capable of being manufactured `at a very low cost, whereby its commercial possibilities are greatly enhanced.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration ofthe following detailed description taken in connection with the accolnl'ianying drawing forming a part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing in the drawing, but may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as eX- pressed in the appended claims.
I attain the above objects and others by the accompanying drawings, wherein :F
Figure 1 is a side view, showing the invention as applied for operating a cream testing apparatus.
Figure 2 is a plan view.
Figure 3 is a detail view of the cable reel and ratchet mechanism.
Figure 4 is a sectional view of the reel and ratchet shown in Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a section taken on the line 5--5 of Figure 1.
ing mechanism particularly Adesigned or- Referrino now to the drawings wherein Rigidly secured to one end ot the :trame I have provided a standard 9, which carries a pulley 1() at its upper end, about which a cable 11 is trained and connected to a weight 12. rlhe opposite end of the cable 11 is wound on a reel 13 mounted on a shaft 14, journalled in suitable bearings 15 of the frame above referred to. A ratchet wheel let and a spring pressed pawl 15 secured to a toothed gear 1G, mounted on the shaft 111 are also provided for communicating power through a pinion 17, rotatable with the shaft 18, which carries a large ratchet 19 outside the frame, as clearly shown by Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing. The teeth of the said ratchet 19 are engageable by an VLshaped spring vor resilient member 21, se-
cured to the traine and normally preventing rotation of the cable and reel thereon when the same is wound and the weight 12 is in its raised or elevated position. The spring 21 above referred to.v is adapted to be raised or lifted by an arm 22, which is secured to a sliding member 23, operable in a guide 24 on the supporting frame of the structure. A pitman connected at one end to the slide 223 and pivoted as at 26 to a crank wheel 27 communicates power to the horizontal shaft 28 Jfrom the ratchet 1f). The shaft 28 is journaled in bearings 29 substantially intermediate the ends of the trame. The lifting arm 22 carries an actuating arm 22, which is disposed in the path of the teeth on the ratchet 19, which is adapted to operate the slide 23 when the ratchet wheel is released. A pulley 30 rotatable with the shaft 28 is provided with a cross cable 31, trained about a horizontally positioned second pulley 32, mounted on the vertical shaft 33 which drives the mechanism within the centrifu gal separator or tester, designated in its entirety by 35. The said tester is supported by the usual standard or braces 36 and preferably on the opposite end of the frame whereby power may be communicated thereto through the mechanism above referred to.
A balance wheel 37, mounted on the opposite end of the shaft 2S permits of the rotation thereof, whereby the crank wheel 2T will reciprocate the slide 23 so that the arm 22 may engage and lift the spring 2l, whereupon the force of gravity acting on the weight l2 will cause rotation to the respective shafts let, 18, and consequently drive the horizontal shaft 28 and. the pulleys 30, 32 and thus communicate motion to the vertical shaft 33 whereby the centrifugal separator is operated. Of course, in machines of this type itI is not necessary for the centrifugal separator or tester to operate for a long duration of time and thus the cable may be easily rewound to its normal position when it is desired to make a test or observe the edects on the milk within the container.
Thile I have shown and described the invention as directed to a milk tester or separator, it will be readily observed that the device readily lends itself to be constructed in the form of a toy and that the vertical shaft 33 may drive any suitable member carried thereby, as is well understood.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated my invention embodied in one form by way of example` and which in practice has been found to be highly satisfactory in obtainingthe desired results. It will be obvious however, that other embodiments may be adapted, and that various changes in the details of construction may be resorted to by those skilled in the art without departing from the spiritand scope of the invention. It is furthermore understood that the invention is not necessarily limiten or restricted to the precise element-s shown except in so far as such limitations are specified in the subject mattei' being claimed.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. An apparatus of the class described comprising a supportingr frame, a vertical standard and pulley mounted thereon, said standard secured to the frame. a cable having` a weight attached to one end and wound over said pulley, a horizontal shaft and reel rotatable .thereon for receivingv the wound cable, ratchet and pawl mechanism for preventing retrograde movementof the wound reel, a driven shaft and meshed gearing;- whereby the same may be operated by the reel, a spring` held ratchet wheel supported on one end of the driven shaft, a reciprocating slide for releasing;` the holding' spring of said ratchet wheel, a power shaft supported on the frame, a rotatable member secured to one end of the power shaft, a balance wheel mounted on the opposite end of said power shaft, a pitman pivoted at one end of the rotatable member and at its opposite end to the slide, an operating arm carried by the slide and disposed in the path of the teeth on the spring held ratchet wheel, a pulley on the power shaft, a vertical shaft and pulley thereon supported on the frame, and a cross cable trained about said-pulleys whereby centrifugal force may be communicated to a member on said vertical shaft.
