Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 17,- 1908. Serial No. 427,570.
To all whom it may concern: 7 I
Be it known that I, HARRY l V. DURKEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuy-ahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new. and useful Improvement in Manicuring Devices, of which the following-is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being'had to the accompanying drawings. I
This invention relates to manicuring devices and has particular reference to a device of this character that is power driven through a flexible shaft from any suitable .source'of power, such as an. electric motor.
.The objectof'the invention is to produce use, and which shall-be economical in con- StIll'CtlOIl and easy of control.
. In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a'gen-' 1 eral View showingan electric motorand a V 3 ing of my invention."
" flexible shaft to which is attached the disk file; Fig. 2 is a view on an enlarged scale showing thedisk file when in use but detached from the shaft.
Taking up'a "detailed de'scription'of the invention by reference to the drawings, in which the same reference characters designate the same parts throughout the severalviews, A represents an, electric motor, B a flexible shaft driven by .saidmotor and O a clutch that is attached. to the shaft-Band that is adapted to receive the manicuring instruments illustrated inF-igs. 2, 3 and 4. While 5 I have elected to show an electric motor for driving the shaft, it will be understood that .any suitableform of devicelfor this "purpose may be employed instead. The shaftB and clutch O are of the usual type employed in dentists instruments, so that a detailed illustration and description of-thesepart's is not 1 deemed necessary for a proper understand- In a complete manicuring set it is pf course necessary to-have a device'for trimming the nails; and, in my invention, this Y is accomplished by means of the disk file thatis shown inFig. 2. This file consists.
-ofjthe shank D, which is adaptedto extend into the clutch so as to be 'driven the'reby and the disk Ethat isi secured to the end 0 the-shank in any suitable manner;
' Batented oct. 26, 909.
has at its sides plain flanged portions F, hetween WlllCh lS the file portion G, the flanges This disk F projecting-beyonl the file portion so as" to prevent injury to. the user in case the disk I should accidentally slip 'Wheniin use;- As
will be seen from Fig. 2, the file portion Gr extends entirely across between the flange portions, but the latterare. provided wi plain circumferential edges.- Preferabl y the shank D has a collaror enlargement through the disk into the axis of the shank and collar for holding the disk in position and for maintaining the same centrally located with respect to the shank.
adjacent the file, and a headed screw I passes In the operation of my invention, the
rapidly rotating. file is'applied t0 the nails, which are quickly trimmed thereby to the desired length.
Asstated, any suitable form of driving means may be employed; but I prefer to use a portable motor, as shown in Fig. 1. This motor has a hook or clip M attached to it,
by means ofwhich it may be attached to or suspended from a wall or any other suitable support. The clip may be secured to the motor-in any suitable manner,'as by screw-- -ing it on to,a threaded member N'that projects from a boss 0 on the motor casing.
.Having described my invention, I claim:
1 .'A'manicur1ng file made in the form of Q -which on. the-periphery of the disk the file- ,is formed, and means for rotating said file.
a disk having plain side flanges between.
2. A manicuring file comprising a pair of flanged portions each having asmooth pe-".
riphery and a file proper extending between the .flanged' portions, and means whereby'the file may be r otatede 3. A in ni'curing said file may be rotated.
In testimony whereof, I signature in the presence of two witnesses.
'- HARRY W.'DURKEE.
Witnessesz' A. J Henson;
file comprising-a disk, .sai'd diskbeing provided with peripheral ridges forming an abrading surface, a smooth protecting member on each side of said .abrading surface, and.means whereby hereunto aifix my. I
