Description

E. R. WILLIAMS. TRIGGER MECHANISM.
APPLIOATIO'N FILED MAY 4, I907.
Patented 001F526, 1909.
WITNESSES I INVENTOR ELZY R.W| LIAMS I ELZY WILLIAMS, .OF ST; JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
TRIGGER MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 26, 1909.
Application filed May 4, 1907. Serial No. 371,76 6.
To all whom it may conccm: I
Be it known that I, ELZY B. WILLIAMS, a citizenof the United States, and a resident of St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Trigger Mechanism, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. V
. The invention relates to fire arms and its object is to provide a new and improved trigger mechanism provided with a very sensitive auxiliary trigger on the usual or main trigger, to securely lock the main trigger and hammer in firing position, and to permit an easy and quick release of the hammer for firing purposes.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the-invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement as applied to a breech loading fire arm, the stock of which is shown in section; Fig. 2 is a like view of the same showing the hammer in a cooked position; Fig.
. 3 is an enlarged edge view of the improvement; Fig. 4 is a' si e elevation of'the same, a part of the cover plate being removed,
7 and Fig. is a side elevation of the improve- I ment showing the parts in another position.
The fire arm on which the improvement is applied consists of the usual stock A, the barrel B, the hammer C, hammer spring C, trigger D, trigger spring D, breech block E and the lever F for operating the breech block E and for forming a trigger guard.
On the finger piece of the main trigger D is rigidly secured a plate or bracket G on which is fulcrumed at H an auxiliary trigger H pressed on by a spring H and limited in its rearward movement by a stop pin H secured on the plate G. The rear end of the auxiliary trigger H is provided with a catch H adapted to engage a shoulder I formed on the upper and free end of a lever I fulcrumed at I on the plate G, the said lever I being provided with a suitable knob or handle I under the control of the operator, for imparting a swinging motion to'the lever I, to engage the shoulder I thereof with the catch H*, as hereinafter more fully explained- The lower end of the le er I is swinging movement at the time the hammer C is in a cooked position, and the auxiliary trigger H is pressed by the operator for firing the fire arm.
The operation is as follows: When the fire arm is loaded and the several parts are in the normal position illustrated in Fig. 5, and it is desired to cock the hammer C, and to operate,
it with the auxiliary trigger, the operator takes hold of the knob 1 and presses the same forward to impart a forward swinging motion to the upper part of the lever 1, whereby the lower part thereof swings rearwardly and'brings the hook K into position for engaging the pin N. The hammer is now drawn rearwardly which cocks the same and at the same time engages the hook K with the pin N. When now pressure is made on the auxiliary trigger H, the catch H is released from the shoulder I, and the spring J swings the lower part of the plate I forwardly. The hook K is however in engagement with the pin N, which makes a backward pull on the trigger and releases the hammer and discharges the fire arm.
When it is not desired to use the auxiliary trigger, the hammer is merely cooked without moving the knob I and when so cocked a rearward pressure on the trigger will release the hammer.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
. 1. A trigger mechanism for fire arms comprising a main trigger, a plate pivoted thereon and provided with a shoulder, an auxiliary trigger having a catch for engaging the shoulder, a spring pressing the lower part of the plateand normally acting to swing said lower part forwardly, a hook pivoted to said lower part, a fixed pin for engagement by the hook, and a spring nor- I mally acting to press the hook into engagement with the pin.
2. A trigger mechanism for fire arms comprising a main trigger, a pin on the breech block lever, a plate pivoted to the main trigger, an auxiliary trigger for engaging the plate to retain it in forward position, a hook pivoted to the lower end of the plate for engaging the pin, a spring normally acting to move the lower end of said plate t'orwardly, and a handle on the plate for the purpose set forth.
3. A trigger mechanism for fire arms comprising a main trigger, a spring pressed lever pivoted to the main trigger, an auxiliary trigger for engaging and locking the said lever, a catch on the lever, and a fixed pin for engagement by the catch.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 15 name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ELZY R. WILLIAMS.
