Be it known that I, JAMES B. WIsE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Watertown, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Us for Waste and Overflow, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in waste and overflow fixtures, designed for use in connection with bath-tubs and the like, and the invention has especial reference to the construction and arrangement of the ells which form prominent parts of the fixture.
The invention relates particularly to improvements in the devices shown and described in my United States Patent No. 917,395 bearing date April 6, 1909.
The object of the invention is to provide simple, durable and inexpensive waste and overflow ells, which are made entirely from sheet metal, and having smooth interior and exterior as compared with similar fittings made from cast metal, and a particular object of the invention is to provide ells of the class which may be produced with fewer operations, and at smaller cost than any like devices heretofore made, for the purpose of meeting and supplying a demand for low priced, but otherwise neat and serviceable bath fixtures.
The invention consists principally of a waste and an overflow ell of simple and novel design, the bodies of said ells being substantially alike in form and size and made out of sheet metal, by the use of dies and other processes, into the form as shown.
The invention further consists of a flangebushing formed in a separate part from sheet metal, and preferably inserted in the expanded mouth of the ell and secured by soldering or brazing, the bushings having central or concentric threaded portions for connecting the strainers, and the flange portions arranged to receive a packing for effecting a water seal between the fixture and the bathtub.
The invention further consists of the fea- I tures and parts set forth in the detail description which follows, illustrated by the accompanying drawing, and then particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the waste and overflow fixture, showing the same applied to a bath-tub, a portion of one of the ells broken away to show the construction and arrangement of the parts. Fig. 2 is a sectional detail of the overflow ell, showing a slightly modified method of attaching the flange bushing. Fig. 3 is a face view of the overflow ell with the strainer omitted. Fig. a is still another modified view of the overflow ell, showing the latter inserted in the flanged part. Fig. 5 is a face view of the waste strainer. Fig. 6 is an inverted sectional view of the waste ell, showing the flange bushing threaded into the mouth of the ell; also showing the strainer threaded into the bushing. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of one of the ells, showing the flange-bushing attached to the body of the ell by rivets.
In the drawing, 2 represents a portion of 1 a bath-tub, having a perforation 3 in the bottom for drawing off waste water, and having a similar perforation 4: near its top for the escape of the water to prevent the overflowing of the tub. To draw the water from the bottom of the tub, I provide an ell 5, the
body of which is formed up of sheet metal,
and provided with a large expanded mouth 6, and a contracted tubular neck 7 To adapt the ell for attaching to the bottom of the tub, I provide a sheet metal bushing 9 which has an integral annular flange .10 formed substantially at right angles to the part 9. The bushing 9 is preferably formed to a diameter equal to the inner diameter of the mouth 6 so that when inserted in the mouth it will fit tightly. After the bushing is inserted in the mouth solder or spelter is applied to secure the parts together and make a rigid water tight joint. The flange 10 preferably extends beyond the sides of the ell and is provided to receive and hold a packing 10, as rubber or putty, which is interposed between the flange and the bottom of the tub. The waste ell 5 is held in place concentric to the perforation 3 by means of a waste-strainer 11 which has a central drawn portion 12, externally threaded to engage corresponding threads formed on the interior of the bushing 9. The strainer 11 is also provided with an integral flange 13, which corresponds to and is arranged concentric to the flange 10 of the bushing, and is adapted to engage the inner surface of the bottom of the tub when the strainer is screwed into the ell. The upper end of the drawn cup 12 of the strainer is open. to receive a rubber or other plug 14, which is employed for temporarily holding the water in the tub.
represents a waste pipe, one end of which connects with the neck of the waste ell 5, the other end connecting with a tee 16, by a gland-nut 17 and a suitable packing (not shown). 19 represents an overflow pipe disposed vertically at the end of the tub, the lower end connecting with the tee 16 by a nut 17 its upper end supporting an overflow ell 20, to which it connects by means of a tubular neck21. E11 20 is preferably made of sheet metal the same shape and size as the ell 5, having an expanded mouth 22 which is disposed concentric to the perforation 4 of the tub. The mouth of ell 20 is fitted with a bushing 23, which is preferably formed to fit tightly in the ell and is then brazed or soldered to rigidly connect these parts. The bushing 23 is provided with an annular flange 24 formed by spinning or drawing the sheet metal, and the face of the flange 24 is preferably concaved or dished, as shown, to receive and hold a packing which is inserted between the flange and the outer wall of the tub. The dishing of flange 24 is required to prevent the packmg from gravitating away from its proper place, concentric to the perforation 1. Bushing 23 is preferably formed in a manner to provide an integral bridge disposed across its center and preferably spaced a short distance outwardly from the wall of the tub. The bridge 25 hasathread- 7 ed perforation 26 to receive a threaded eye bolt 27, which is employed for attaching and holding the overflow strainer 28 in position concentric to the perforation 4 and the bushing 23. '1 he ell 20 is held in operative position solely by means of eye-bolt 27 and strainer 28, assisted by the bridge of the bushing 23.
As described above the preferred method of connecting the bushings 9 and 23 to the ells 5 and 20 is-by forming the contacting surfaces of the parts smooth and plain, and then soldering or sweating the joints to make them as one part. I
In Figs. 2 and 6 I have shown a modified and slightly more expensive method of connecting the ells to the bushings, which consists of threading the external surfaces of the bushings, and internally threading the mouth of the ells. Under this construction the ells and bushings may be separated if attaching the ell to the bushing, which con sists of fitting the bushing tightly into the mouth of the ell and then securing the parts in place by means of rivets 31.
It will be obvious from a comparison of the fixture shown and described in my former patent, with the present invention, that the latter shows a construction and arrangement of the principal parts requiring aless number of operations and therefore less expense in the manufacture, and these together with the other novel features illustrated and described herein, constitute the essential and important points of my improvement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A waste and overflow fixture, comprising a sheet metal ell to receive the overflow from the top of a bath-tub, the said ell consisting of a single shell having a downwardly extending neck connecting with an overflow pipe, and having a plain mouth facing a perforation in the wall of the tub, a sheet metal bushing telescopically fitting the mouth of the ell and secured in place by means of solder, the said bushing having an annular concaved flange adapted to receive and hold a packing against the outer wall of the tub, the said bushing having a central bridge provided with a threaded perforation, a strainer disposed on the inside of the tub concentric to the said bushing, and an eye-bolt adapted to pierce the said strainer and the wall of the tub, and to be screwed into the bridge of said bushing for clamping and holding said ell in operative position.
2. A combination bath fixture, comprising a waste pipe, an overflow pipe and a tee, connected to form one part, a waste ell, connected to one end of said waste pipe by means of a drawn integral neck, the body of said ell comprising a hollow sheet metal shell, having a plain upwardly facing mouthdisposed concentric to a waste port in a bathtub, a bushing of sheet metal tightly fitting and sweat into the mouth of the ell, said bushing having a circular flange adapted to bear against the bottom of the tub, said bushing having its inner surfacethreaded, a waste strainer adapted to be inserted through the port in the bottom of the tub, and to be screwed into said bushing for connecting said ell to the tub, an overflow ell mounted on one end of said overflow V pipe, the said ell having a hollow body terminating in a plain mouth disposed concentric to a hole'in the end of the bath-tub, a bushing tightly fitting and sweat into the mouth of said ell, said bushing having an annular concaved flange to bear against the outer wall of the tub, and having a central bridge, a strainer disposed on the inside of the tub facing the mouth of said ell, and a threaded eye-bolt to connect said ell and said strainer to the wall of the tub.
3. The combination with a bath-tub having a waste port in the bottom, of a waste ell, comprising a sheet metal shell, having a plain mouth, disposed beneath and concentrio to the port in the bottom of the tub, a bushing inserted in the mouth of the ell and interposed between the ell and the bottom of the tub, the said bushing being threaded internally, and having an annular flange, and a strainer disposed inside of the tub, the said strainer having a flange to engage the bottom of the tub, and having a threaded drawn portion adapted to pass through the waste port and to be screwed into the said bushing for holding the said ell in place.
l. A waste and overflow fixture, comprising a sheet metal ell to receive the waste water from the bottom of a bath-tub, the said ell consisting of a one-part shell, having a laterally drawn contracted neck and a plain expanded mouth, and a sheet metal bushing tightly fitting in the mouth of the ell, the said bushing having an integral annular flange resting upon and overhanging the mouth of the ell, the said bushing being threaded internally to receive a waste strainer.
5. The combination with a bath-tub having a perforation in its bottom and a wastepipe to conduct water from said tub, of a sheet metal ell having a contracted neck to connect with said pipe, and having a plain circular mouth, a flange-bushing tightly fitted in the mouth of the ell, the said bushing internally threaded to receive a waste strainer, the said ell and said strainer disposed concentric to the perforation in the bottom of the tub.
6. The combination with a waste pipe and a tee, of a sheet metal ell adapted to receive the waste water from a port in the bottom of a bath-tub, a sheet metal bushing fitting the mouth of the ell and having an integral annular flange to receive and hold a packing against the bottom of the tub, and a strainer having a drawn portion adapted to be inserted through the bottom of the tub and to be screwed into the said bushing to clamp and hold the said ell in place.
7. A combination fixture, comprising two ells, one of said ells adapted to be connected to the bottom of a bath-tub for receiving the Waste Water, the other ell adapted to connect with the top of a bath-tub to receive the overflow water, each of said ells formed out of sheet metal and having a plain tubular mouth and a contracted neck, a bushing for the waste ell, and a bushing for the overflow ell, one of said bushings internally threaded, the other bushing having a central bridge, the said bushings rigidly fitted into the tubular mouths of said ells, each bushing having an integral flange to receive a packing for sealing the ells to the walls of the tub, a threaded strainer to hold the waste ell in place, and a plain strainer and an eyebolt to hold the overflow ell in place.
