' hereinafter UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN CALDWELL, 0F BURLINGTON, WISCONSIN.
Application filed November 16, 1908.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN CALDWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Racine and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates more particularly to combs for hair cutting. Its main object is to enable a novice as well as an expert hair dresser to out or trim hair evenly and expeditiously.
It consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement and combinations of parts as particularly described and pointed out in the claims.
In the' accompanying drawing like characters designate the same parts in the several figures.
Figure l is a plan view of a comb embodying the invention in a preferred form, parts being broken away to more clearly illustrate its construction; Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section on the line 2 2, Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the comb and shear guide and gage detached; Fig. l is a plan view of a modification; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross section on the line 5 5, Fig. l.
Referring to Figs. l to 3 inclusive, showing one form of comb embodying the invention, which may be made of metal, celluloid or other suitable material, the back a, along one side of which the teeth b are formed, is doubled lengthwise to form a longitudinal slot c parallel with the plane of thefolds and opening along and adjacent to the base of the teeth on the upper or outer side of the comb. A shear guide and gage Z for determining the length of the hair, is formed or provided on one side at approximately right angles thereto, with a base flange or tongue c, which is removably fitted in the slot c. The material of which the comb is made has suflicient spring or elasticity to inch the nange or tongue e between the folds of the back and to hold the shear guide and gage securely in place. Each comb is furnished with a number of interchangeable guides and gages of different heights for cutting or trimming hair to different lengths as desired.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 462,742.
Ihen the guide and gage is attached to the comb in position for use, as shown in Figs. l and 2, with the face on the side next to the flange or tongue e against the free edge of the upper or outer fold of the back o, the opposite face will lie approximately in line with the bottoms of the notches or slits between the teeth and will thus support the hair in an upright or standing position convenient for cutting or trimming when the comb is manipulated in the customary way for hair cutting. As the hair is brought to a standing position against the guide and gage (Z, it is cut or trimmed to a predetermined length corresponding with the height of the guide and gage, by resting the shears as they are operated against the outer edge of said guide and gage.
By using the different guides and gages with which the comb is provided, the hair on the crown and back and sides of the head may be cut or trimmed to different lengths.
In this way, any oneunaccustomed to hair cutting, can with little or no practice, cut hair expeditiously and evenly. Substantially the same results may be accomplished in substantially the same way by forming or providing a comb, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, with teeth o along both edges of the back a and with shear guides and gages CZ of different widths or heights permanently attached to one side of the back approximately perpendicular thereto and lengthwise thereof, one adjacent to the base of each row of teeth. This form of comb is reversible, and is used and operates substantially like the other. Either form is adapted for right or left hand use.
Various changes in details of construction may be made without departing from the principle and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A comb provided with a longitudinal shear guide projecting from the back adjacent to the base of the teeth and having a substantially straight edge forming a rest for shears.
2. A comb provided with a longitudinal shear guide detachably secured to and projecting from the back adjacent to the base of the teeth and having a substantially straight edge forming a rest for shears.
Patented Oct. 26, 1909.
3. A comb having a longitudinal Slot n l In Witness whereof I hereto ax my Sgtle baczk substzlntally parallel vlh the y nature in presence of tWo Witnesses. Y p ane o the toet and a shear gue avn Y a flange removably tted n said slot and l Y EDWIN CALDWELL' adapted to hold the guide at an angle .to lVtnesses: the back of the comb adjacent to the lase JOHN T. PRAsoI-I, Y of the teeth. G. A. UEBELE.
