I'Q all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE LEMIEUX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washburn, in the county of ABayield and State of "Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Ties, of which the followin is a specification.
lThis invention re ates to railroad ties and rail securing devices therefor, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple iny construction, cheap to manufacture, and
which will perform the functions forv whichv it is intended with eiiiciency;
With the above, and other objects 1n view vwhich will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In'the accompanying drawings there has 'been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the invention and in' which:-

It is the primary object of the present invention t0 construct a railgoad tie provided with means whereby the'rails may be attached thereto, which is not only simple and inexpensive in construction but which will withstand the continuous pounding of'the rolling stockas well as being practical andv immune from the inclemency of the elements.
In the accompanying drawing there has been illustrated a device which .from practice has been found to overcome the diiiculties or deficiencies above described.
In the accompanying drawing the numeral 1 designates the tie member. This tie is constructed of cement or other plastic material andas shown in the drawings, is preferably of a rectangular formation. The cement tie 1 is reinforced by a'suitable U-shaped metal boxing or core designated by the numeral 2.
Thisl boxing or core 2 is of a-length and;
width slightly less than the tie member and iseprovided upon its top and 'sides with a plurality of recesses or openings 3 whereby the cement may be securely connected i with the core. By this arrangement it willi be noted that the tiel is not only fastened to the core lat its top and sides, but at the same time the plastic material fills the entire body of the U-sh'aped boxing and this, provides a strong and effective tie.
vIn order to-'connect the rails 4 upon the tie, the core or boxing 2,- aswell as the tie 1 are provided with vertical openings or cut-away portions 5. These cut-away portions 5 are positioned adjacent the ends of` ,the tie l in spaced relation with each other so 'as to be arranged inpairs which are adapted for the receptionof suitable locking dogs 6. The dogs G'are each provided' with a depending portiohor body 7 provided uponone of its edges with a rectangular slit or cut-awayportion 8 from which projects an overlying lip 9, while the opposite edge of the said dog 7 is also provided with an offset portion' o1' extension 10. The tie l as well as the core 2.are both provided with suitable transverse openings ll which are adapted for the reception of keys 12.I
These keys are substantially wedge-shaped in side elevation and have one of their ends slit so as to provide means whehy? the same will be securely attached tothe tie 1 aft-'T2 passing through the openings 11 andthe cutaway portion 8 of the dog 7. It is to be' undenstoodthat the overlying lip 9 of the dog 7 is arranged at an anglecorresponding with the inclined base fiange of the rails 4 so that when the key- 12 is positioned within the slots the said portion -9 will effectively engage the upper'faces of the flanges. of the rails and the offset. portion l0will be positioned upon the face ofthe core opposite the said lip 9. By this construction it will be noted that I have provided an 'extremely simple and effective device for the purpose intended, one which may be cheaply constructed, which is effectively reinforced -by the core 2, and which provides devices for effectively locking the rail upon the tie without necessitating the use of nuts, bolts or ther like.
Having thus described the 'invention what is claimed as new is Isey their adjacent faces provided with cut-away portions, and Wedge-shaped securing members adapted to be inserted Within thetrans- Verse openings in the tie` and they reinforcement thereof to retain the dogs in position 10 upon the rails and the tie.
