' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN S. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a' newv and useful Improvements in Engine-Governors; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the figures of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the same, and which section of the longitudinally extensible coupling on the line a-b of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 a detached perspective view of the coupling.
My invention relates to an improvement in engine governors, with particular reference to their provision with means for readily adjusting the valve-rods thereof from a distant point, as, for instance, from the cab of a traction engine, ing to provide for this purpose simple, reliable and convenient means constructed with particular reference to lightness and ease of action so as to avoid the imposition of any undue restraint upon the free action of the valve-rod under the control of the governor proper.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a governor having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.-
As herein shown my invention has been applied to a governor of the type illustrated in my prior patent No. 854,412 granted May 25, 1907. I would, however, have it understood that my invention is not limited to a governor of that particular form, but that it may be used in conjunction with any form of governor to which it may be found to be applicable. As herein shown the lower end of the upper part or section 2 of the twoart valve-rod extends into a vertically movable chambered head 3 having a curved passage 4 containing a series of balls 5 of which the upper ball presses against the lower end of the said part 2 of the valve-rod, and of which the outer ball is engaged by a regulating screw 6 by means of which the balls,
the obj ect be- 'as a series, are moved so as to cause the chambered head 3 to be raised or lowered with respect to the said part-2, whereby the lower part or section 7 of the valve-rod, which is attached to the head 3 by a pin 8, is correspondingly raised or lowered, and with it the valve, which is not shown.
For the operation of the regulating-screw 6 from a distant point, as for instance, from the cab of a traction engine, I employ a longitudinally extensible cage-like coupling consisting of two corresponding parts respectively consisting of a wire bail 9 and a disk 10, and a wire bail 11 and a disk 12, the'disk' 10 having the parallel ends or legs of its bail are riveted and also having perforations 14 located 90 from the said perforations 13 for the free passage of the parallel ends or legs of the bail'll, while the disk 12 is formed with] perforations 15 in which the parallel ends or legs of the bail 11 are riveted, and with perforations 16 located 90 from the perforations 15 for the reception and free passage of the parallel ends or legs of the bail 9, whereby one disk slides on the bail of'the other disk, and'vice versa. The extensible cage-like coupling thus formed, though rigid against torsional strain, is readily'extensible longitudinally, and provides an extremely light and free-acting connection between the regulating screw 6 and the inner end of a connecting rod 17 which is journaled in a bracket 18 attached to the base 19 of the governor proper.
The outer end of the connecting rod is connected by a flexible coupling 20 to a rod 21 which leads to the point from which the governor is to be controlled. For the reception of the bow of the bail 9 the screw 6 is formed with a relatively large opening 22, while for the reception of the bow of the bail 11, the rod 17 is formed with a relatively large opening 23.
It will be understood that the vertically movable chambered head 3 continually reciprocates with the action of the governor balls so that the extensible cage-like coupling will be constantly moved up and down with reference to the inner end of the con necting rod. The cage-like coupling being very light and its action being very easy, it imposes practically no burden upon the lower part 7 of the valve-rod. At the same time it connects the rod 17 and screws 6 in such r the speed of the engine.
a manner that there is little or no lost motion -so that the operator in the cab, for example, is enabled, without loss of time, to turn the regulating screw 6 and through the balls 5 shift the position of the chamber 3 and the lower part of the valve-rod, and so regulate I may add that the turning of the regulating screw in the direction required for forcing the balls against the lower end of the upper part 2 of the valve-rod virtually lengthens the valve-rod as a whole; while the turning of the screw in the opposite direction allows the chambered head 3 to rise correspondingly, whereby the valve-rod as a whole is shortened. In other words, the chambered head 3 with its contained balls and adjusting screw constitutes a means for virtually lengthening or shortening the valve-rod which for that purpose is made in two parts with the head interposed between the same. That idea is broadly old, my present invention concerning itself only with the means for operating the regulating screw from a distant point rod and adjusting-screw.
2. In an engine governor, the combination with a two-part valverod, of a chambered head containing a curved passage which receives one part of the valve-rod the other part of which is. attached to the head, a series of balls located in the said passage and coacting at one end with the adjustable part of the valve-rod, a regulatingscrew mounted in the head and. coacting with the seriesof balls at the opposite end thereof, a connecting-rod, and a longitudinally extensible cage-like coupling for connecting the said screw and connecting-rod.
3. In an engine governor, the combination With a two-part valve rod, of a chambered head containing a curved passage which adjustably receives one part of the valve-rod the other part of which is attached to the head, a series of balls located in the said passage and coacting at one end with the said adjustable part of the valve-rod, a regulating screw mounted in the head and coacting with the ball at the opposite end of the series, a connecting-rod, a longitudinally extensible cage-like coupling for connecting the said screw and connecting-rod, and a longitudinally extensible cage-like coupling consisting of two parts each of which consists of a bail and a disk, each of the disks being perforated for the fixed attachment of the parallel ends of one bail and for the passage through it of the parallel ends of the other bail.
