THOMAS PAIPWORTH, 0F PORTLAND, OREGON.
NECKTIE-FASTENER AND COLLAR-BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 26, 1909.
Application filed September 19, 1908. Serial N 0. 453,836.
To all whom it may concern:
a citizen of the United. States, and a resident.
of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved N ecktie-F astener and Collar- Button, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a combined necktie retainer and collar button, which can be easily inserted in and removed from a stiffly-starched collar and which in its preferred form effectually conceals the tie fastener.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a rear perspective view of a collar secured to a shirt by means of my invention; Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view of one form of my invention; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of another form of my invention, in all respects similar to that shown in Fig. 2, with the exception of a certain hook to be hereinafter described. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through a collar button,a collar, a shirt and a tie, the button shown being of the type shown in Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through a collar button, a collar, a shirt and a tie, the button shown being of the type shown in Fig. 2.
My necktie retainer and collar button is preferably. made of a single flat piece .of metal, although it is possible to produce it by other means. This single flat piece of metal is bent bent back upon itself to form a heel 3, then outwardly and perpendicularly to the heel 3 to form a shank 4, then back upon the member 4 and outwardly again, to form the member 5, which completes the shank, and finally at approximately right angles to the shank to form a downwardly projecting head 6. The heel 3 is about half the length of the base of the button. The members 4 and 5 of the shank are so curved that a multiplicity of thicknesses is produced and that a space is left between the heel 3 and the shoulder 5 of the shank member 5, to receive and securely hold the collar.
In the preferred form of my invention, one end of the blank from which the button is formed is bent upwardly to form a hook l and then downwardly to form a sharp bill 2.
It is obvious that when the button is once in position, the collar cannot accidentally escape from the head 6, and that the collar can be removed only by swinging it back and down over the head 6.
The hook 1 serves to hold the tie, which it does in the manner shown in Fig. 5, the sharp bill 2 embedding itself in the fabric of the necktie. Because the hook 1 lies normally below the neck-band, the tie is made to cover the entire button and conceal it.
Since a hook l is unnecessary for holding the front of a collar to a shirt, or for turn down collars, it may be omitted, as in the button shown in Fig. 3. Furthermore, the head 6 may be used to hold the tie, as shown in Fig. 4, although I prefer the form shown in Fig. 2, because it enables the fastener to be concealed.
Because of the flat cross section, my button can be readily slipped in and out of a button hole in the most stifily-st'arched fabric. The space between the shoulder 5 of the shank member 5 and the heel 3 receives the collar, and between the two it is impossible for the collar to slip from the button accidentally.
Having thus described by invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A combined necktie retainer and collarbutton comprising a heel, a shank projecting outwardly from the heel and bent completely back uponitself to produce a plurality of thicknesses and to provide an end shoulder, between which and the heel the collar may be held, and a hook extending downwardly from the outermost thickness of the shank and adapted to hold the tie.
2. A combined necktie retainer and collarbutton, comprising a heel bent at its lower end to constitute a necktie engaging bill and bent back at its upper end to produce a plurality of thicknesses, a shank formed by bending the outermost thickness of the heel away from the heel and adapted to pass through the button-hole of the collar, said shank being also folded back upon itself to produce a plurality of thicknesses, providing an end shoulder between which and the outermost thickness of the heel the collar may be received, and a hook extending 5 downwardly from the outermost thickness of i the shank.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
