To all whom it may concern:
H. PENNING- E Be it known that we, GEORGE the United States of America., residing at Beaver Falls, in the county. of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in-Brushes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accom. panying drawing.
This invention relates to brushes, and the primary object of our invention is to provide a brush with a novel case for inclosnig the same.
Another object of this invention is to provide a vsimple and durable article that can be advantageously used by travelers and easily carried in the pockets for use when A further object of this invention is to provide a brush with a novel casing for inclosing the brush, said casing being provided with means whereby it can be attached to the brush to serve functionally as a handle.
lVe attain the above objects by a brush that will be hereinafter described in detail and then specifically claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this application, wherein there is illustrated the preferred embodiments of'oui. invention, but we would have it understood that the detail construction thereof can be varied or changed without departing fromV the spirit of the invention. y
In the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a ration of the brush in position for use, Fig.. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same, Fig. 3 is a similar View illustrating the brush inclosed by a housing and casing, Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectionalview of the same, looking at the backof the brush, and Fig. 5 is a crosssectional view of the brush, inclosed by the housing and casing, the section being taken at right angles'to the sectional view shown in Fig. 3.
ln the drawings, 1 designates a metallic casing having an open end 2 and an open bottoni. Oppositely disposed sides of said easing are bent to provide interior confronting longitudinal guide grooves 3. Detachably mounted in the metallic casing 1 is a metallic housing 4 having the oppositely disposed sides thereof provided with longitudinal exterior ribs 5 adapted to slide in i the grooves 3 and retaln said housing in i side elethe casing 1. One end of engagement with the'inner side thereof Iadthe housing 4 on t i jacent'to the longitudinal sides of said housing is provided with parallel metallicl clips 6, while the opposite end of the housing is provided with a single central lug 7 and a clamp, said clamp comprising at springs 8 connected by a yoke 9, and to provide clearance for -the yoke 9, the edge of the housing is cut away, as at 10.
11 designates a brush back having bristles 12 and one end of said back is adapted to be held between the parallel clips 6, while the opposite end central lug 7 and be retained thereon by the ends of the yoke 9 extending over the end of the back 11. The longitudinal sides of the brush back lllare recessed, as'at 13, to
rovide finger grips, while the longitudinal sides of the housing. 4 at the upper edges thereof are cut away, as at 14, to provide clearance for fingers gripping the back of the brush.
As shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the brush is retained within the housing by the clips 6, vlugs 7, and the clamp 'of said housing, and with the housing in the casing 1, the brush is fully protected. To place-the brush in a. useful position, the housing is removed from the casing and the clamp 9 moved to release the brush. By inverting t-he brush, the back 11 thereof can be again placed in engagement with 7 and the clamp, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and the housing replaced within the casing, functionally as a brush.
In connection with the casing 1, we can use a mirror 15, said mirror being retained in engagement with the casing y1 by a flange l@ soldered or similarly secured to said casing.
By using the housingr and the brush in the position shown in Fig. 2 and detached from the casing, said casing can be held whereby handle or the backofthe -the operation of the brush in the hair can invention.
is, adapted to rest upon they the clips (i, lug' whereby the casing will serve said housing, said means including clips at one end of said housing'for engaging the back of the brush, a. lug and a spring clamp at the opposite end of said housing for' engging the other end of the back of the brush, substantially as described. l
2. A device of the character described, comprisinga casing having an open end and further having the o posite sides thereof provided with longitudinal grooves, a houslng having longitudinal ribs slidably mount ed in the grooves in the casing, a brush detechably mounted in saiduhfusing, clips ce1'- ried by the housing fqr'eceiving one end of 4the brush, and a sprlng clamp at the opposite end of the housing for holding the other end of the brush back.
In testimony whereof we aix our signatures 'in the presence of two. Witnesses.
