HEADACHE APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1909.
Application filed March 26, 1909. Serial No. 486,017.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, CLYDE GRAY and ORION B. HITGHOOCK, citizens of the United States, residing at Horton, in the county of Brown and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Headache Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide a device adapted especially to relieve pains and other affections in the head by means of mechanical pressure upon the muscles at the base of the skull and upon the nerves and blood and lymph channels in theirimmediate vicinity; upon the temporal muscles and the nerves and fluid channels in their immediate vicinity; upon the frontal muscles and fluid channels in their immediate vicinity; upon the tissues at the posterior part of the crown, and by general compression of the head, thus equalizing and regulating the nerve, blood and lymph supply to and from the head, relaxing muscles and exciting reflexes.
We accomplish our object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the entire device; Fig. 2 shows the device in one of the positions it is adapted to be placed upon a head; Fig. 3 shows a reverse position which it is adapted to occupy on the head and Fig. 4 is a detail view of a pad and a strap broken away, upon which the pad is adjustable.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
As shown in Fig. 1 the frame of the apparatus is of T shape and consists of an outwardly curved heavy steel wire support A having a narrow flat outwardly curved bar B adjustably attached across the lower end thereof. C. O. are duplicate occipital pads for pressure on the tissues in the occipital fossze. D is a crown pad for the posterior portion of the crown. E is a strap on which pads F. F. and T. T. may be slid to the desired position. All the pads are preferably made of felt, I), backed with leather cl, in which there are duplicate slots 03 d the strips between said slots forming bridges over strap E, support A and bar B. The pads b b can thus be easily removed and replaced by any one. H is a short strap provided with a central loop 71. by which it is carried on said support A and rendered adjustable up and down thereon to permit it to be carried to the proper positions on said support to relieve pains in the different parts of the head. Buckles I-I are connected with the ends of said strap H and engage with the ends of strap E, the device being thus held in place on the head and the size, pressure and tension regulated.
In the use of this device at all points of pressure and in the adjacent tissues the nerve and fluid supply are regulated.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the apparatus described can be adjusted to varied positions upon the head for relief of the various afflictions thereof.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a headache appliance the combination of an outwardly curved support, an outwardly curved flat cross bar attached on an end of said support, a connecting strap and a central loop thereon by which the same is adjustably held on said support, buckles on the ends thereof, a supporting strap to regulate the size and tension of the appliance and hold it in position its ends engaging with said buckles, a pad on an end of said support adjustable up and down, du-
plicate pads on the flat ends of said-cross bar adjustable in and out and a plurality of pads adjustable on said supporting strap to a plurality of positions, substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of twowitnesses.
