TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
f y Application le 'September To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it VVknown that I,`EDGAR BERRY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Ilion, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented lcertain new and useful Improvements Type-Vriting Machines,of which the following is a specication. i
My invention relates to typewriting vmai chines and more particularly to Adetachable front shields therefor, and the principalfob- A ject of said invention is to provide a simple and efficient construction of the character specified which can be Preadily ydetached from the machine and replaced when desired.
To the above and other ends which :will .hereinafter appear, `my invention consists in the features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of .devices'hereinafter'described and particularly pointed out-in the appended claims. o
In the ydrawingsfl have sliowiionfly-so much of a typewriting machinefas is neces- 'j sary to an understanding v`oat myinveition.

ment may support certain of the type bar actuating means not shown.
A front shield, designated as a whole by the reference numeral 6, is preferaloh7 made ot' sheet metal and has an outline such as that `shown in F 1 and comliiises a seg- Vmental creare-shaped .portion 7 and a de pending portion Ei'. The central transverse section of this shield is shown in Fig. 4 and it will be seen that the segmental portion 7 extends up in front of the free ends ot' the type bars and the depending portion 8 thereof projects down below the segnnent. The vshield as a Whole covers the segment 3 and the parts which may be carried thereby. "b p'ring clips or catches 9 are each in the nature of a leatspring riveted at one end to VVthe rear side of 'the shield as shown at 1() fand the tree end projects.upwardly and is bei'it'as indicated at 11 to forni an engaging.r
carried bv and may be introduced into or detached ufrom the machine with said shield or it may be detached from the shield bythe removing screws 19. l
Various changes may be made without departing `from the spiritand scope of my 1nvention. E
What I claim as newv and desire to secure by` Letters Patent, isz- A h 1. In a iront-strike'typevviiting machine, the combination of a shieldv situated in front of the type bars, leaf-springs carried by said shield` and pins which are engaged by said springs for detachably holding the shield in place.
2. In afi'ontstrike typewriting machine, the combination of a segment which supports the. forward ends oi the type bars, en-
gagging devices carried by said segment, a shield situated in front of said segment 'and in front ot' the forward ends at' the type bars, and spring` engaging-devices carried by said shield and cooperative with the engaging* devices on said segment for detachably holding` the shield in place.
In a front-strike iypewrit'ine; machine, the combination' of a seejiiient which supports the forward ends of the type bars, en- "ing pins proj ectinq ironi said segment, a shield situated in front or' said segment and in front et' the forward ends ot' the type bars, and leaf-spring' engaging' devices carried by said shield and coperative with the engaging pins oii saidsegment toi' detach- ,ably holding' the shield in place.
4. Iii a typeWi-itiii;r machine the combination of iabnlator keys. a shield detachably secured to the front ot' the machine. and
By this- -construction the index for 'thetabulator is' tabiilating index devices carried by and detachable with said shield, said index devices being arrangedbelow the shield and in proximity to the tabulator keys.
. In a. typcivriting machine the. combina.-
-tion of tabiilator keys. a shield detachably .l secured to the front ot' the machine. tabulat- 1 ing index devices carried by and detachable With said shield, and means tor deiacliably connecting' said index devices to said shield,
said index devices being arranged below the shield and in proximity to the tabulatoi" tion of tabulator keys, a shield detachably secured to the front of the machine. said shield having a portion inclined toward the front ofthe machine, said inclined portion having a slot that extends transversely of the machine, -and tabtilator-index devices carried kbysaidinclined portion at the rear side thereof and above the tabulator keys and which may be seen through said slot.
8. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination of tabulator keys, a segment for supporting' the forward ends of said type bars, adetachably mounted shield situated in front of said segment. said shield having a part which extends transversely of the niachine and which is inclined toward the front of the machine and has a slot therein which extends transversely of the machine, and a tabulator index plate secured to the inclined portion of the shield so that it may be seen through said slot, said index plate being aranged above and adjacent to the tabulator reys.
9. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination of tabulator keys, a shield situated in front of the forward ends of the type bars, said shield having a depending portion which is slotted` a tatuilator index i back of the shield and which may be inspect- -ed through said slot,I the index 'being arranged above and adjacent to the tabnlator keys, and a plate detachably secured to the' shield back of said index for holding the index in place.
10. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination of tabulator keys, a shield situated in front of the forward ends of the type bars, said shield havinga depending;`
portion which is slotted, a tabulator index back of the shield and which may be inspected through said slot, the index being' arranged above and adjacent to the tabiilator keys,a plate detachably secured to lthe shield back of said index for holding` the index in place, and spring' means for detachably holdine' said shield inplace.
11. In a typewriting,v machine, the combination of' tabulator, keys. a shield detachably secured to the front of the machine, tabulating' index devices carried by and detachable with said shield, said shield having a depending' portion which is sloted, a tabulator index back ot' the shield and which may be inspected through said slot. the index being arranged above and adjacent to the tabulator keys, and a platedetachably secured to the shield backof said index i'or holding' the index in place.
Signed at Ilion, in the county of Herl kimer, and' State of New York, this 23rd day of September A. D. 1907.
