Description

F. H. GROSS. SCREW GAP. LPPLIOATION FILED APR. 2a;19o7.
Patented Oct. 19,1909.
FERDINAND H. GROSS, OFiWASI-IINGTON, INDIANA.
SCREW-CAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1909.
Application filed April as, 1907. Serial No. 370,462.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND H-cGROSS, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVashington, in the county of Daviess and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Screw Caps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to screw caps for fruit jars and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a screw cap which may be operated by hand to hermetically seal the fruit jar and which can be readily detached from the ar by hand or without the use of a detaching tool.
Another object of the invention is to provide a strong, durable and eflicient cap for jars which will provide a hermetical seal and which can be readily detached from the jar.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the upper end of a fruit jar and showing a screw cap connected thereto and made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 .is a top plan View of the cap. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the rubber gasket. v
Referring to the drawing for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a fruit jar and connected to the upper end of the neck portion thereof is a sheet metal interiorly threaded member 2 which is bent around the upper end of the jar neck and secured thereto by means of cement or other adhesive substance 3, said metal threaded portion being provided with interior screw threads a and the terminal edges of the portion 2 being bent inwardly, as at 5, against the surface of the jar neck.
The cap consists of a top or dome 6 connected at its periphery to a flange 7 provided with a series of corrugations 8. Formed on or connected to the flange 7 is an inwardly extending member 9 and extending at right angles to said member 9 is a threaded portion 10, extending from the lower edge of which is a concaved bottom 11. The rubber gasket 12 is seated between the threaded portion 10 and the lower edge 13 of the flange 7, said gasket being fitted against the lower wall of the member 9 and adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the member 2.
From the foregoing, it will be obvious that a screw cap, made in accordance with my invention, can be readily grasped and turned into connection with the jar, owing to the corrugations -8 in the outer surface of the flange 7 and that the cap may be readily removed from the jar owing to the construction of the corrugated flange. It will also be obvious that a cap embodying all the features of my invention may be readily made of porcelain or glass instead of metal and that the device will be strong, durable and efficient for its purpose.
The member 2 which is of inverted U-form in. vertical section has its outer wall pressed outwardly in concavo-convex form to provide a lower annular bead adapted to contain a quantity of cement, and to serve as anchoring means to further prevent displacement of said member from the jar. The internal threaded portion of the member 2 also provides additional anchoring means, and the inner wall of said member has its lower end pressed so that the lower extremity of said wall engages the inner wall of the neck of the jar.
It is obvious that by the provision of the inwardly directed portion 9 of the cap, a space or pocket 9 is formed between a portion of the flange 7 and between the depending threaded portion 10 for the reception of r the gasket 12. It will thus be understood that the gasket is held at all times against a casual displacement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
The combination with a jar, of a metallic annular member of inverted U-form in cross section straddling the neck wall of the jar, said member having its inner wall threaded and having its lower extremity engaged with the inner wall of the neck of the jar, said member having its outer wall pressed outwardly at its lower edge to form an annular bead, cement confined between both the inner and outer walls of the member and the walls of the neck of the jar, a cap having a top, a corrugated annular flange extending from the peripheral edge of the top, an inwardly directed shoulder carried by said flange and located above the lower end thereof, said flange and said shoulder respectively forming a pocket above the upper end of the me- In testimony whereof, I afiix my signa tallic member, a gasket located in the pocket, ture 1n presence of two Witnesses. a depending threaded portion carried by said shoulder and engaged with the inner thread- FERDINAND GROSS ed Wall of said metallic member, and a con- Witnesses: cave bottom carried by said depending CLARENCE HYATT,
