' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1909.
Application filed June 1, 1909. Serial No. 499,355.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN PIcNocoo, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of La Salle, county of Lasalle, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Combined Cigar-Cutters and Match-Vending Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to combined cigar cutting and match vending machines, and.
more specifically to that class thereof in which the matches are vended in an igniting condition.
The object of my invention is to providev a device of the character mentioned which will be entirely automatic in its operation and strong and durable in its construction.
A further object is to provide a device of such character which will be of the highest possible efficiency and of neat and finished appearance.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention tially the entire length thereof from the cas-' ing in such a position as to be convenient for the seizure thereof by the operator. 7 My invention further conslsts 1n certam details of construction and arrangement ofparts all as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of my device, Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof, the mechanism casing being removed and the match magazine cover, broken away, illustrating the cigar cutter in normal position, Fig. 3 is a similar elevation showing the cigar cutter in depressed position, Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the construction shown in Fig. 2, illustrating in addition a portion of the front wall of the casing in section, Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section taken on substantially the line I w w of Fig. 2, Fig. 6 is a similar section taken on substantially the line y y of Fig. 3, Fig. 7 isa detail bottom plan view of the match magazine taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 5, Fig. 8 is a detail front elevation of a portion of the match vending mechanism, Fig. 9 is a detail rear elevationof the match conveyer plate, Fig. 10 is a section thereof taken on the line a o of Fig. 9, Figs. 11 and 12 are rear and side elevations respectively of the match igniter embodied in my invention, Fig. 13 is a detail side elevation of the pivotal pin upon which is mounted the cigar cutter supporting arm and the match conveyer plate, Fig. 14 is a plan view of a portion of the mechanism shown in Fig. 7 for locking the magazine cover in closed position, and Fig. 15 is a detail perspective view of the weight mounted in the magazine to efiect the forcing of the matches contained therein toward the discharge opening thereof.
Referring now to the drawings 1 indicates a suitable casing or housing in which is inclosed the operating mechanism of my device. Comprised in such mechanism is a vertically disposed front plate 2 upon the rearward surface of which is arranged, the
same being secured thereto preferably by screws 3, a channeled member 4 forming with the plate 2 a vertically extending rectangular passage 5. Mounted for vertical reciprocation inthe passage 5 is a carrier plate 6, the same being normally held in the upper end portion of said passage by a leaf spring? secured to the base of the casing 1, the free end portion thereof extending through slots 8 and 9 provided in the lower edge portions of the members 4 and 2 respectively and resting in engage ment with the lower edge of said plate. An
obliquely extending horizontally disposed slot 10 of a length such as to permit of the passage of a match therethrough, provided in the plate 6 is adapted to register with a similar slot 11 provided in the plate 2 when said plate 6 is at the upper extremity of its movement, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. Provided in the member 4 is a similar slot 12, the latter being however of a greater width than the slots 10 and 11, the same being so positioned in the member 4 that when the plate 6 is at the lower extremity of its movement, the slot 11 provided therein will be in registering position therewith, as clearly shown in Fig. 6. Rearwardly extending from the member 4:, the forward open extremity thereof communicating with the slot 12, is an inclined magazine or match container 13, let indicating the matches contained therein.
p In the construction thus far described,
upon positioning the plate 6 at the lower extremity of its movement a single match will be deposited in the slot 10, as shown in 6. Such match is carried or conveyed by said plate, when the latter is elevated, and deposited in the slot 10 upon said plate reaching a position at the upper extremity of its movement, such upward movement of said plate being limited by a pin 6 projecting from the plate 6 and extending through the slot 9 of the plate 2, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. Rockingly mounted upon a pin 15 secured inand projecting from the plate 2 is a carrier or conveyer plate 16 the upper edge 17 of which is grooved or channeled in form. Said edge is so disposed that when said plate is in its lowermost position, the same will be positioned immediately below the slot 11. Hence a match fed from the plate 6 into the slot 11, as just described, will be deposited upon the grooved edge 17, as clearly shown in Fig. 6. The pin 6 extends through the plate 2 to such an extent as to traverse the path of movement of the conveyer plate 16, hence upon the latter being rocked downwardly the member 6 will i be carried therewith.
Mounted upon the outer extremities of parallel arms 18 rockingly mounted upon the pin 15 and a similar pin 15 secured in and projecting from the plate 2, is a cigar cutter 19 which may be of any ordinary or preferred form, the same being however so designed that actuation thereof is effected by depression or downward rocking of the arms 18. A pin 20 extending through one of the arms 18 and the plate 16 effects the simultaneous movement of said arms and plate. A spring member 21 coiled upon the pin 15, the respective extremities thereof resting in engagement with an eye 22 formed upon the plate 2 and the pin 20, normally holds the arms 18 and hence the plate 16 in a position at the upper extremity of their movement, such upward movement being limited by a stop 23 projecting from the plate 2 traversing the path of said plate.
' Positioned adjacent the extremity of the free end portion of the plate 16, the same being pivotally mounted upon a pin 24 secured in and projecting from the plate 2, is amember 25 adapted to serve in the capacity of a match igniter. The upper end portion of the member 25 is arcual in form, the in nerm'ost portion thereof being formed with a series of knife edged blades 26 against which, when the plate 16 is rocked upwardly, is forced the head of a match carried by the latter. A leaf spring 27 secured by a set screw 28 in a bifurcated post 29 formed upon the plate 2, the respective end portions of said spring resting in engagement with a lug 30 formed upon the plate 2 and the upper end portion of the member 25, is adapted to hold the latter in yielding contact with the head of the match carried upon the plate 16, as just stated. A set screw 31 threaded in the lug 30, the inner extremity thereof engaging a perforation 31 provided in the lower end portion of the member 25, serves as a means of adjusting the latter with respect to the adjacency of the upper end portion thereof with the outer extremity of the plate 16.
Coiled upon an integral pin 32 projecting from the plate 16 is a. spring member 33 the extremity 34 of which engages the pin 20 and the extremity 35 thereof, which is hooked in form, as clearly shown in Fig. l, engaging an irregular slot 37 formed in the front surface of the member 2. Formed in the edge 17 of the plate 16 is a recess 38 arranged therein in registering position with the right-hand extremity of the slot 11. The upper end portion of the spring is of such a length that, upon the upward movement of the plate 16, the hooked extremity 35 thereof will enter said recess and hence engage the end portion of the match carried upon the plate 16. The side of the recess 38 adjacent to the extremity of the match is provided at its upper extremity with a projecting portion or flange 35) against which, when the head of the match is contacting the igniter blades 26, the opposite end portion of the match is adapted to rest, such portion obviously serving as a means of maintaining the match in rigid position during such operation. By the provision of the spring 33, upon the match head leaving or passing beyond the upper extremity of the member 25, during the oper ation of the device, the opposite end portion thereof will be depressed by the extremity 35 thereof, and clamped between the same and the surface 10 of the recess 38, the match in such event being disposed in an extended position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In order to effect the forcing of the matches to the lower or discharge extremity of the magazine 13 as the same are gradually removed or discharged therefrom. I provide a transversely disposed rectangular member 41 slidably mounted in said magazine. The lower edge of said member is provided with a projection e2 which extends through a longitudinally extending slot 43 provided in the bottom of said magazine. Coiled around a shaft 44 the extremities of which are fixed in bosses 15 formed upon the adjacent surfaces of vertically disposed supporting walls of the magazine 13, is a clock spring a7 the provision the spring because of its. exerting a constant pull upon the member 41, forces the latter against the matches contained in the magazine crowding the same toward the discharge opening therein, thereby preventing tangling or confusion of the matches in the magazine and hence facilitating the correct operation of the device.
48 is a removable cover for the magazine. The forward reduced end portion of said cover engages the rearward flanged edge of a stationary cover portion 49, as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6. Depending from the rearward end portion of the under surface of the cover 48, the lower end portion thereof projecting through a slot 50 provided in the bottom of said magazine is a finger 51. Pivotally secured as at 52 upon said. magazine bottom is an angular lever 53 the end portion 54 of which is ada ted to engage a perforation 55 provided for the reception thereof in the lower exteriorly projecting end portion of the finger 51, said member 53 being adapted when in engagement with said perforation to lock the cover 48 in closing position. A leaf spring 56 is adapted to normally hold said lever in locking position. Having its rearward extremity secured to said lever, the same forwardly extending therefrom through guide loops 57 secured to the magazine bottom, is an operating stem 58. The rearward extremity 59 of said stem is'hooked in form, as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6. Laterally projecting from the projection 42 is an arm 60. Said projection is adapted when the member 41 is in its lowermost position in the magazine to contact the stem extremity 59. By such provision the magazine cover will remain locked in the closing position until the magazine has been substantially exhausted whereupon the stem 58 will be withdrawn thereby causing the rocking of the lever 53 to unlocking position and hence permitting of the removal of the cover 48 for refilling of the magazine.
From the above description, taken in con nection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood, and it will be seen that a simple, convenient, and eflicient construction of a combined cigar cutter and match vender is provided.
While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form. of my device, I do not wish to be limited thereto, as there might be many changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention.
