SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,137, dated August 18, 1896. Application filed August 16,1895. Serial No. 559,515. (No modeld To all whom/it may concern.-
Be it known that I, YSIDRO DEL CAMPO, of El Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented anew and Improved Combined Cigar-Clipper and Match-Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The main object of this invention is to provide a combined match-box and cigar-clipper and one in which the matches will .be delivered with a regular feed, so that it will be highly inconvenient for persons to carry away more than one or two matches.
Other objects are contemplated, alltending to increasethe efficiency, durability, and.
cheapness of the invention, and the full attainment of all will be apparent from the following specification.
To these ends the invention consists principally in a gravity controlled feed-roller communicating with the primary receptacle for the matches and capable of turning to deliver the match into a receptacle from which it may be removed by the operator, and in the cigar-clipping device operatively connected with the feed-roller and moving in unison therewith.
The invention further consists in various novel features of construction and combina tions of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally embodied in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my invention, parts of the same being shown in section. Fig.2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is afront elevation of the ma- Fig. 5 is a'section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4:, said view differing only from Fig. 2 in thatthe parts are shown in a different position. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 4, this view also being only different from Fig. 3 in. that the parts are shown to have a different position. Fig. 7 is a detail section showing the operation .of the deliveryrollers, and Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the feed-roller.
My invention comprises a substantially rec .tangular casing 10, to be formed of any suitable material and having apartition 11 therein, which divides its interior into two compartments A B, the compartment A being a size equal to about one-half the size of the compartment B.
' Revolubly j ournaled in the partition 11 and in the right-hand side of the casing'10 is a roller 12, the same having a rubber band 13 wound around it and having slightly-tapering ends. This roller coacts with a feedroller 13, which is also journaled in the partition 11 and in the right-hand side of the casing 10. This roller is formed'with .a longitudinal groove 14, having at its central and main portion substantially perpendicular sides and having at its extremities enlarged portions 15, which are designed to receive the heads of the matches and prevent contact of the same with the other parts of the machine.
' Located within'the compartment B of the casing are the inclined boards 16 and 17, which are each disposed inwardly from the respective front and rear sides of the casing, and which respectively engage the rollers 12 and 13, so as to form a hopper for containing the matches 0.
Alined with the boards 17 and located below the roller 13 is an inclined chute or board 18, which projects opposite an opening. 19 in the casing 10 and engages the inner extremity of the plane portion a of the roller 20,'the
said roller being journaled in offsets or normal position is caused and maintained by the weight 25, connected to the left-hand trunnion of the roller 13 through the medium of a Secured to the partition 11 sprin g-rod 26.
and just above the plane of the trunnions on the roller 13 is a stop 48, which serves to limit the upward movement of the weight 25.
Fulcrumed on the partition 11 and in the compartment A is a lever 27, which has one end extended to the link 24 and slotted longitudinally,so as to receive a pin 28,proj ecting from the middle of said link, while the re maining or forward end of the lever 27 is pivotally connected to the vertical bar 29. This bar 29 is provided at its upper end with a forwardly-extending arm 30, the same having a flattened finger-grasp 3l,projecting through a vertically-elongated slot 32 in the front of the casing 10, and by these means the upper end of the bar 29 is held in approximately a fixed line of vertical and longitudinal movement. The lower end of the bar 29 is movable in a bracket 33, fixed to the left-hand side of the partition 11 just above the drawer 34, which drawer is movable through an opening 35 in the rear side of the casing and may be opened from said rear side. i
The bar 29 is formed with a longitudinal slot 36 just above the bracket 33, and this slot has a screw-pin 37 adjustable vertically in it, and the said pin carries a dog 38, which is pivotally hung on the pin and provided at its rear lower portion with a transversely-extended detent 39, which engages the rear side of the bar and which prevents the front end of the dog from upward movement above the horizontal line. This dog is adapted to 'coact with a pin 40, projecting from the left-hand trunnion 41 of the delivery-roller 20,and it will be seen that as the bar 29 reciprocates downwardly the dog will positively engage the pin and rock the roller 20 inwardly, while on the upward movement of the bar 29 the inclined front end of the dog 38 will engage with the pin 40 and the dog will swing to avoid the said pin, as best shown in Fig. 7. The trunnion 41 of the roller 20 is located in a notch 42, formed in the front of the casing 10,and the pin 40 projects inwardly from the trunnion and into the compartment A of the casing.
Formed in the front of the casin g and communicating with the compartment 11 is a circular opening 43, which is opposite a knife 44, the same being removably secured to the bar 29 and comprising an angle-plate having an upwardly-inclined and beveled edge cl. By making the knife removable it may be detached from the bar 29 for the purpose of sharpening and other repair. The opening 44 is so disposed with relation to the drawer 34 that the-tip of the cigar, when severed from the body portion of the same, will fall into the said drawer.
The compartment B has at its lower portion a drawer 45, which is so disposed that the roller will deliver a match into it when the said roller is rocked rearwardly and the lid 47,which covers the match compartment or hopper.
In the use and operation of my invention the hopper formed by the boards 16 and 17 is filled with matches, as shown in Figs. 3 and 6, and supposing that one desires to secure a match and to clip the end of his cigar all that will be necessary is to insert the end of the cigar into the opening 43 and press the finger-piece 31 of the bar 29 downwardly, which will cause the said bar to move in a corresponding direction and the knife 44 will move past the opening 43 and sever the tip of the cigar from the body portion, as Fig. 5 shows. Simultaneously with this operation the lever 27 will swing the arms 22 and 23 upwardly, as shown in Fig. 5, so as to rock the rollers 12 and 13 and cause the groove 14 of the latter roller to move forwardly and downwardly, carrying with it a match and delivering the same upon the chute 18, down which said match gravitates and falls upon the plane portion a of the roller 20. Immediately after this operation the weight exerts its influence and returns the parts to their normal position, as shown in Fig 2. The first operation performed upon the downward movement of the bar 29 is the engagement of the dog 38 with the pin 40, which will result in a rocking of the roller 20 inwardly, so as to incline the plane portion CL toward the drawer 45, so that if amatch be seated on said portion it will be emptied into the drawer. The eccentric disposition of the roller 20 will cause the same to automatically return to its normal position, and this return will be directly prior to the delivery of the match from the roller 13 by the operation of the downwardlymoving bar 29. By these means if the match be not taken from the roller 20 it. will be emptied into the drawer 45 and saved. This operation prevents any possible loss of matches, and it will also be seen that persons will not be extravagant with the matches, because of the inconvenience which attends securing more than one or two.
The rod 26 is resilient, so that upon the engagement of the weight 25 and stop 48 the rod will be bent and will then react and causethe return of the weight with greater speed than otherwise.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1.
