To all whom) it may concern: i Be it known that I, ROBERT E. JACK, a
, citizen of the United States,-.residing at Qshfkosh, in the county of Winnebagoand State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Clippers and Match- Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to means forclip'ping' the ends of cigars and furnishing lighted matches, and has for its object to provide a single complete machine for accomplishing both of the aforesaid results at a single operationand for agitatingthe matches after each operation.
With this object in view the invention con sists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of the parts of such machine, which will be hereinafter fully described and afterward specifically claimed.

2'2-indicates a horizontal rock-bar pivoted to the base 1 and provided at its right-hand end with an arm 23, normally held in the path .of movement of the lugs 14 15.16 by means of a spring 24, and at its left-hand end with an arm 25, finished at its outer end as one jaw of a clamp, the other jaw of which is at the outer end of a spring-pressed lever 26, pivoted to arm 25, the jaws being normally 7o closed and having their ends bent outward to facilitate the entrance of a match.
At 27 is shown a plunger mounted to slide vertically a guideway in the side 2 of the casing, provided at its upper end with a knob 28 and near its lower end with an inward projection or lug 29, the plunger being normally held in its uppermost position by a spring 30.-

A The parts being in position as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, with the plunger raised and the hopper supplied with matches, the plunger is moved downward by pressure on its knob, which will cause the knife 36 to cut off the tip of a eigar42, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1,) projected through eye 37. The lug 29-011 the plunger by pressing radial arm 11 downward will rotate plate 10, shaft 7, disk 8, and roller 9 through about one hundred and twenty degrees, during which movement lug 14: will contact with arm 23, rotate rock-bar 22, and bring arm 25, with its clamp, inward into position in the recess to receive the match 40, which has been brought around in groove 17 of the roller 9, which match has been lighted by friction with plate all during such movement and pressed between the jaws of the clamp. The lug 14 immediately upon the clamp of arm receiving said match passes out of contact with the end of arm 23, and said arm 25 moves outwardly to its normal position, so that the match can then be removed from the clamp and used tolight the clipped cigar. It will be noted that as the plunger 27 moves downwardly the rod will drop by gravity until the end 3L contacts with the upper bearing 32, whereby the downward movement of said rod is arrested; but plunger 27 continues its downward course until'arm 11 has moved out of the path of said lug 29. Pressure upon the plunger being released, the spring 30 will raise it, the movement lost by said rod 33 permitting the lug 29 to engage the lower edge of arm 13 and swing said arm backward out of its path of movement, causing the shaft and its connections to rotate backward a short distance before affecting said rod 33. The projection 29 in the further upward movement of the plunger will engage the upper end 34E of rod 53, raising said rod and moving its end 35 beneath radial arm 12, causing the shaft and its connections to rotate forwardly a short distance, whereby the parts are in position for another operation, the lug 29 in the second operation engaging radial arm 13. This slight backward-and-forward rotation of the shaft during the upward movement of the plunger carries the roller back and forth under the hopper, thus agitating the matches therein and insuring the deposit of one of them in the next groove of the roller ready to be delivered by the next operation.
If desired for use as a house match-safe, the cigar-clipper could be dispensed with, the casing supported on abracket on the wall, and a lock 4-3 provided n pon the hopper-cover to engage with the plunger by means of a bolt 44.
The utility and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the foregoing description, in which I have specifically described the construction and relation of the various parts; but I desire it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the exact forms and locations of parts, as many changes and variations might be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In combination a hopper to contain matches, a grooved'roller to receive matches from the hopper and deliver the same, a rough plate in the path of movement of the heads of the matches being delivered, and a delivcry-clamp in the path of movement of the roller to receive the matches therefrom, substantially as described.
2. In a mechanism of the class described, the combination with a suitable support, of a roller mounted therein, means for supplying articles thereto, means on said roller for carrying a single article, means for rotating said roller for delivering the article carried thereby, and automatic means for oscillating said roller after each delivery, substantially as described.
3. In a mechanism of the class described, the combination with a suitable support, of a roller mounted therein, means on said roller for carrying an article, means for supplying articles to said roller, means for rotating said roller for delivering the article carried thereby, and means for receiving the article to be delivered and removing the same from said roller and carrying the same to the point of delivery, substantially as described.

In a mechanism of the class described, the combination w' h a suitable framework, of a roller mounted therein, an article-containing hopper arranged above said roller, means on said roller for receiving a single article from said hopper, means for rotating said roller, a delivering-arm pivotally mounted in said framework, and means for swinging said arm into the path of movement of said article for receiving and carrying the same to the point of delivery, substantially as described.
5. In a mechanism of the class described, the combination with a suitable framework, provided with a supply-receptacle, of a roller mounted in said framework and communieating with said receptacle, means on said roller for receiving an article from said to ceptaole, means for rotating said roller for removing the article from said receptacle, and auxiliary means forremoving saidarticle from said roller and carrying the same to the point of delivery, substantially as described.
6. In combination a hopper for containing matches, a grooved roller for receiving them therefrom, a shaft carrying the roller, a disk on the shaft, lateral lugs on the disk, means for rotating the shaft, a clamp to receive the matches carried by the roller, and means operated by the lateral lugs for bringing the clamp into operative receiving position, substantially as described.

In a mechanism of-the class described, the combination with a suitable framework, of a shaft mounted therein, a delivery-roller arranged on said shaft, radial arms extending from said shaft and secured thereto, a Vertically-movable rod mounted in said framework, means carried thereby for engaging one of said radial arms of said shaft, and auxiliary means for imparting a return rotation to said shaft after the operation of said Vertical rod whereby the said roller will be oscillated, substantially as described.
