MACHINE FOR WRAPPING PAPERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent, No. 478,345, dated July 5, 1892.

- To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN F. LINTHI-OUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, Sacramento county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Machines for Trapping Papers; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a device for wrapping papers and pasting the wrappers together; and it consists-in certain details of construction, which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which v Figure 1 is a perspective view. of my machine. A A are two vertical posts supported upo a suitable base 13, and G is a sliding frame traveling upon guides on the vertical posts, so as to be moved up and down by means of a treadle D and connecting-rods and levers E E, so arranged that when the -operator places his foot upon the treadle the sliding frame will be drawn downward and when the treadle is released the sliding frame will be drawn upward by a weight or equivalent spring A. r i.
F is a stationary horizontal table supported between the posts A, projecting to one side between the sides of the vertically-sliding frame. pieces F, between which the wrappers are laid, and a clamp F prevents-the paste-brush from dragging the wrappers back with it. At the outer end of this table is a paste-trough G, and at each side of the outer end of the table at the ends of the trough are the raised sides H, having cam-"grooves I made in them, as shown.
J is a-paste carrier or brush of any suitable constrnction mounted upon a shaft, the ends or pivots of which pass through the curved slots I and into the slotted ends of the crank or rocker-arms J of the bell-crank levers M", which are fulcrurned at j A distributing-rollerK dips into the paste in the trough G, and the ends of the roller carry This table has adjustable guide-- ratchet-wheels M, which are rotated by pawls livers it to the brush, which in turn transfers the paste to the wrappers. This movement is effected by means of the arms M of the bell-crank levers, which are engaged by the lugs N upon the sliding frame 0. When the sliding frame is brought down, the upper lugs N strike the arms M, and through them actupon the rockers J. These carry the brush over in the arcof acircleby means of the curved slots I, in which the brush-spindles travel and deposit a portion of the paste upon the edge of the uppermost wrapper lying upon the table D, and when the sliding frame 0 again moves upward by the release of the treadle the brush is returned. At the same time the distributing-roller K is turned by means of the ratchet and pawl, before described, so that another portion of paste is 1 brought uppermost, upon which the brush then rests, receiving another charge of paste. The paper being laid upon the wrapper, the ends of the paper and the wrapper are inserted into the slotted wrapping-spindle O.'
This spindle extends horizontally across the table, and has a slot made from one end to nearlthe other, as shown.
PP are rollers beneath the. spindle, upon which it turns, and'when the paper is rolled around the spindle these rollers press it up in close contact, so that when the projecting edge of the wrapper is pasted the rollwill be very compact. The rollers P are journaled upon the upper ends of the cross-levers Q, which are fulcrumed at their point of crossing, so as to stand in the form of the letter X.
R is a lever fulcrumed at one end having the other end in such position that when the frame 0 moves upward a projecting portion S strikes the end of the lever B. This lever carries a block '1, which is raised when the leverR israised and forced between the crossed arms Q below the fulcrum-point, thus spread ingthem apart, and as they are equally spread above the f ulcrum the rollers P are separated,
so as to allow the paper to be removed from the wrapping-spindle O. The arm R passes outside of the projecting part S when the frame 0 returns, being carried to one side by the beveled or inclined lower end of this part, as shown at S.
The device for removing the paper from the spindle consists of the oscillating arm U, which is forked at its lower end, so as to pass astride of the wrapping-spindle O, and it engages a bar V, which travels in the slot in the spindle at the inner end, and is connected with a spring V. This lever-arm U is operated by the movement of the sliding frame 0, which carries for this purpose a beveled lug ti, on its inner side similar in form to the lug S. The upper arm of lever U is made flexible, so that when the frame descends the lug will pass by without affecting it; but on its ascending the square top of lug it will move the lever upwardly, and consequently its lower part will be moved sidewise, thus moving the bar V outwardly and causing the roll to be delivered to the discharge-rollers \V. Sim ultaneously with this movement the spreading of the presser-ro1lers P takes place in order to give the forked end of lever U space enough to slide along the spindle to slip off the roll. During the above-described movements it will be manifest that the spindle has to be at rest also, for the reason that the addressing of the paper takes place, too. This is effected in the following manner: The frame 0 has on the back of its right-hand side a rack c, which causes the rotation of a sprocket-pulley d by means of an intermediate pinion on the pulley-shaft. This pulley cl drives another sprocket-pulley e by means of the chain f. The latter is mounted loosely on the shaft 0 of the wrapping-spindle O, and it is provided on its inside with a pawl g, which is to engage a small disk h, with one tooth cut in its periphery and keyed to the shaft 0. On the inside of' frame A and next to its journal in said frame this shaft 0 is operated upon by a brake-lever 2', and the latter again is operated by a lug c on the inner upper end of frame 0. Now as the frame descends the pulley e is caused to revolve by its connection, and its pawl g engages the tooth on disk h, thereby revolving the spindle, and so the wrapping is done until the lug c commences to press the brake 1', thereby arresting the revolving of the spindle. By that time the frame 0 has finished its downstroke and is ascending, turning therefore the pulley e in the opposite direction, and its pawl now simply slides over the disk, not affecting it any more. Now the deliveringis done, as before described, through the discharge w and is there received between two rollers in the opposite side of frame A. These rollers are rotated toward each other by means of a rack X upon the side of the sliding frame and a pinion Y upon the shaft of one of the rollers. Sprocket-pinions upon the two rollers engage each other and cause them to rotate simultaneously, and the paper is received between these rollers and pressed flat as it passes out, and is delivered into any suitable receptacle. The upper roller is actedupon by springs Z, which allow it to adjust itself to varying thicknesses of paper.
The papers are stamped with the addresses before they leave the wrapping-roller O by means of a stamping-wheel a. This Wheel has a number of addresses around its periphery. These addresses may be arranged in any suitable manner to succeed each other, and the roller carrying them is moved forward, so as to present a new address at each upand'down movement of the slide 0. This action is accomplished in the following manner: To the link E of the treadle connections with the frame 0 is pivoted a rod Z, provided with a joint at its center to enable said rod to as sume a bent position when the roller a is thrown forward and to straighten out again when the roller is returned. The action of the projection upon the rod Z against the fixed lug q upon the standard assists the return of the parts to their normal position when the rear of the treadle is depressed, the spring upon the back of the joint assisting in straightening the joint. To the upper end of the rod Z is attached a bent arm 'm, which is at its upper end forked to receive the stamping-wheel a. This armmis slotted over its fulcrum-pin n, fixed to a standard arising from the base B of the frame, and on this same standard is also fulcrumed the pawl 19, which engages the ratchet-wheel I), attached to one side of the wheel and upon the same shaft. A spring 1), connected with the arm on above and forward of the pin a, serves to prevent the roller a from tilting downward when the rear end of the treadle and the connecting-rod Z are forced upward, while the inclination of the slotted portion of the arm m, which slides upon the pin n, and the upward pull of the spring '0 in frontof the pin, causes the arm on to slide forward over the pin, in stead of tilting about it, the spring extending to permit this movement. From this description it will be seen that when the treadle is depressed the link E and rod Z will rise and throw the arm m right above the center of the spindle-shaft, and then by reason of the slot in the arm will drop the wheel a on the roll and accomplish the addressing. The releasing of the treadle will draw the parts back into a normal position, the lug g on the standard causing the rod Z to straighten out, as before described. Any number ofcylinders a may be employed, and when the addresses upon one cylinder have been exhausted another cylinder may be substituted,and thus the whole number of addresses may be stamped upon the wrappers as fast as the papers are inclosed therein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a machine for wrapping papers, the combination of a main stationary frame and v the journals or spindles of the brush, and the a wrapper-supporting table having the pastetrough at one end, a distributing-roller dipping in said trough, abrush or carrier having the edges adapted to form contact with the roller, a vertically-sliding frame movable upon the main frame, the curved slotted guides for bell-crank levers having the rocker-arms for supporting said journals or spindles, whereby the vertical movements of the sliding frame are transmitted through the rocker-arms to the brush, so that the latter willdeposit paste upon the edge of the wrapper on the table and return to the distributing-roller, substantially as herein described.
2. In a machine for wrapping papers, the combination of vertical stationary and sliding frames, the stationary table upon which the wrappers are supported, a paste-trough, a dis tributing-roller, a carrying-brush, the side plates having curved guide-slots in which the ends of the paste-brush spindle travel, and the bell-crank levers whose rocker-arms support said spindle, said levers having an arm in the path of the sliding frame whereby the,
brush is moved, and a pawl-and-ratchet mechanism actuated by the rocker-arm for partially rotating the paste-distributer at each movement of the sliding frame, substantially as herein described.
3. In a machine for wrapping papers, the stationary and Vertically-sliding frames, treadle and connecting mechanism whereby the latter is reciprocated, the stationary table upon which the wrappers are supported, the pastetrough, distributing-roller, and carryingbrush, and intermediate mechanism whereby the latter is alternately moved from the trough to the wrappers by the reciprocation of the sliding frame, in combination with the slotted roller, within whichthe ends of the paper and wrapper are inserted and by which they are rolled together and the wrapper pasted, substantially as herein described.
4. In a machine for wrapping papers, the combination of the slotted roller, whereby the papers and wrappers are rolled and the latter pasted, the rollers P P, located beneath the wrapping-roller and between which and said rollers the paper and wrapper passes, the swinging lever, having a forked end by which the papers are removed v-endwise from the wrapping-roll, and the rollers W atethe end of the wrapping-roll, between which the papers are carried after their discharge from the wrapping-roll. I
5. The combination of the slotted wrappingroller 0 and the rollers P P, by-which the paper and wrapper are pressed against the wrapping-roller, the crossed levers Q, in the upper ends of which the rollersP are journaled, the lever R, and the block T, carried by said lever, whereby the crossed levers Q are opened, and the vertically-sliding frame 0, with the projection S, which engages the end of the lever R, whereby the latter is forced up and the rollers P are separated after the paper has been wrapped, substantially as herein described.
6. In a machine for wrapping papers, the combination of a slotted wrapping-roller upon which the paper and wrapper are rolled, the rollers P, by which the paper is kept in contact with the wrapping-roller untilthe wrapper has been pasted, mechanism by which said rollers are separated after the wrapping and pasting arecompleted, a swinging slotted le ever by which the paper is forced from' the wrapping-roller, and pressing-rollers between which the paper passes as-it leaves the wrapping-roller, substantially as herein described.
7. In a machine for wrappingpapers, the combination of a wrapping-roller around i whichthe paper and wrapper are rolled and the wrapper is pasted, a type-carrying roller,
