This invention relates to bookbinding-machines; and it consists of an improvement on a machine of this class described and claimed in United States Letters Patent No. 603,406, granted to me May 3, 1898, and in an application for Letters Patent prepared and filed by me June 5,1900, Serial No. 19,106; and the object of the invention is to provide a machine of the class specified with means for applying the backs or covers of books thereto in the operation of binding; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The shaft 8 is also provided with an eccentric 1.0,
and mounted over said shaft adjacent to said eccentric is a vertically-movable shaft or support 11, provided at its lower end with a fork 11, which passes down over the shaft 8, and at the upper end of said fork is a pin 11*, in connection with which the eccentric 10 operates. The shaft or support 11 is also provided at the cross-head of the fork ll with a backwardly-directed arm 12, which is connected with the vertical piston-rod 13 of an air-pump cylinder 14, the object of which will be hereinafter described, and secured to the frame 7 at 15 is an arm 16, to which is pivoted at 17 an angular lever 18, the said lever being projected below the pivotal point 17 and provided at its lower end, or at 19, with a pin which works in the cam-groove 9 of the cam-wheel 9. The lever 18 is provided about midway thereof with a forwardly-directed extension 18 and with a lateral extension 18 from which extends an upwardly-directed arm 18, and a spiral spring 18 connects the lever 18 with the main frame, and the operation of this lever will be hereinafter described.
Mounted transversely at the front end of the machine is an inclined track or way 20, provided with wheels or rollers 21, and mounted on said wheels or rollers is a book-carriage 22, on which in practice are placed the books to be bound, which are designated by the reference character 23. The book-carriage 22 is provided atitsupperend with a bracket 24, against which the books are placed, so as to hold them in an upright position, and secured to the main frame and transversely adjustable thereon at 25 is a standard 26, having a backwardly-directed arm 27, which holds the books in an upright position on the lower portion of the book-carriage 22 and which abuts against the lower book in the row on said book-carriage. The table or plate 38 serves as a support for the book backs or covers 40, and this table or support is provided at the rear edge thereof with an inclined support 4], against which the backs of the books rest, and at the front edge thereof with a lip 42.
Arranged at each side of the front of the table or support 38 and depending therefrom are bearings 43, through which are passed a shaft.44, and this shaft carries at its opposite edge blocks 45, having transverse holes 46 arranged longitudinally of the machine, and passed through these holes are tubular arms 47, provided at their free ends with suctioncups 48, and connected with the tubular arms 47 rearwardly of the blocks 45 are flexible.
tubes 49, which are connected with the pumpcylinder 14 and which take air from said pump-cylinder to the suction-cups 48. The object of providing a plurality of the holes 46 in the blocks 45 is to provide means for laterally adjusting the tubular arms 47, so as to accommodate the machine to books of different sizes. One of the blocks 45, preferably at the right-hand side of the machine, is provided with an angular arm 50, which carries a roller 51, which is adapted to travel on the track or way 37 of the bar 37, and connected with the angular arm 50 is a cord 52, which passes over a roller 53, secured to the bar'37, and which is provided at its free end with a weight 54.
Arranged at the front of the table or support 38 are two pulley wheels or rollers 54, over which is passed a cord 55, and these cords are secured at one end with a sliding bar 56, arranged transversely of the rear end of the plate or support 38 and provided at its opposite ends with rollers 57, which bear on the opposite sides of the plate or support 38, and the inclined support 41, against which the backs of the books rest, is connected with the transverse sliding bar 56, and arranged below the rear portion of the table or support 38 and suspended therefrom are rollers 58, over which the cords 55 are passed, and the ends of these cords are provided with weights 59.
The support 34, on which the books are placed in the operation of binding, as hereinafter described, is provided with a gage 60, against which the books abut, and the tables 35 are laterally movable, as shown and described in the patent and application hereinbefore referred to.
It will be understood that in the operation of this machine the books after they are placed on the support 34, as hereinafter described, are provided with paste, which is applied to the outer leaves thereof in the same manner as in the United States patent hereinbefore referred to, the construction herein described and claimed being limited to an improvement on the machine described and claimed in said patent and in the application also hereinbefore referred to, and the said construction described and claimed in this application being limited to devices for applying the covers to the books after the paste has been applied thereto; and the operation of the machine described and claimed herein will be readily understood in view of the foregoing statement when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
The power-shaft 8, when the machine is in operation, is revolved by any suitable means or by any desired power, and as this shaft revolves the vertically-arranged shaft or support 11 rises and falls regularly, this result being accomplished by the eccentric l0 and the pin 11*, on which said eccentric operates. The book-support 34 being connected with the shaft or support 11 also rises and falls therewith, and the bar 29 is moved back and forth longitudinally of the machine by the lever 18, which is operated by the cam-wheel 9. In the backward movement of the bar 29 the arm 31 or the pivotedpawl 32 at the end thereof engages with one of the books 23 and moves it backwardly off of the book-carriage 22, and the said book drops onto the support 34, which passes between the leaves thereof and centrally thereof, and the said book is moved along the support 34 into the position shown in Fig. 2 by the said arm 31 of the bar 29, and at this time the book-carriage moves downwardly until another book strikes the arm 27 of the standard 26 and is in position to be acted on by the arm 31 of the bar 29, as hereinbefore described. In the forwardmovement of the bar 29 the pawl 32 strikes the first book at the lower end of the row and is turned laterally thereby in order to allow the arm 31 to move forwardly; but

when said arm 31 assumes the position shown in Fig. 1 the pawl 32 also assumes the position shown in said figure and is ready in the next forward movement of the bar 29 to engage the book adjacent to the arm 27 of the The vertical movement of the shaft or support 11 also operates the airpump 14, and air is alternatelyforced through and drawn from the tubes 49, and in the normal position of the parts the tubular arms 47, with which said tubes 49 are connected, rest in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 4, and in the upward movement of the booksnpport 34 the said arms are thrown upwardly, as indicated by the dotted line in Fig. 4, and in this position of the parts the suction-cups 48 bear on one of the book backs or covers 40, which are held in an upright pile, as shown in said figure, and said suction-cups 48 come into operation, the air being withdrawn from the tubes 49, and said cups adhere to one of the book backs or covers, and in the following downward movement of the support 34 the support of the book backs or covers also descends therewith, and the horizontal arm or extension 37 of the bar 37 remains stationary, and as the support of the backs or covers descends the tubular arms 47 are thrown into the position shownin Fig. 4 and carry with them one of the book backs or covers and leave it in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and 4 and 5. This operation of the tubular arms 47 is occasioned by reason of the fact that the blocks 45 are secured to the downwardly movable supports of the book backs or covers, and as the said blocks move downwardly the angular arm 50, which is connected with one of the said blocks, also moves downwardly, and the end thereof which rests on the horizontal track or way 37 is drawn forwardly, which operation throws the tubular arms 47 into the position shown in Fig. 4, as above described, and in the next upward movement of the support 34 the said vertically-movable parts are raised, and the weight 54 throws the tubular arm 47 back into position to engage another of the book backs or covers. When the book back or cover is left in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and 4 and 5, it is in position, as shown in Fig. 5, to be caught by the vertically-movable book which rests on the support 34, and in the operation of the machine, as hereinbefore described, in the upward movement of the support 34 the book passes on upwardly between the tables 35 and raises the back or cover, the sides of which fall into position thereon, after which the book, with the back or cover placed thereon, is removed by hand.
It will be understood that the book backs or covers are always pressed against the lip 42 of the support on which they rest by the sliding plate 56, and one of them is always in position to be acted on by the arms 47, and the downward movement of the book-carriage 22, which is occasioned by gravity, always holds one of the books 23 in position to be acted upon by the arm 31 of the bar 29, and the movements of all of the parts are so regulated that the vertical movement of the book-support 34 and the horizontal movement of the arm 29 and the deposit of one of the backs or covers on the table 35 occur in regular order, after which the book-support 34 moves farther up, so as to engage with and remove the back or cover from the said tables 35.
I have also shown in Figs. 1 and 2 devices for holding the book backs or covers 40 in position on their support and designed to prevent the removal of more than one book back or cover at a time, and these devices consist of springs which are connected with a collar 61, through which the shaft 11 passes, and said springs project forwardly and bear on the tops of the book backs or covers, as shown in said figures. It will be observed that these springs are not shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the illustration thereof in Figs. 1 and 2 being all that is deemed necessary.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a modification o the inclined track or way 20 on which the book-carriage 22 moves, and in this form of construction the inclination of the track or way is in the opposite direction from that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and hereinbefore described. In this form of construction the book-carriage moves upwardly over the inclined track or way and is provided with a rack-bar 61, which operates in connection with a gear-wheel 62, mounted on a shaft 63, which is provided with. a ratchet-wheel 64. A pawl is pivoted to one side of the track or way and operates in connection with said ratchet-wheel to prevent the backward movement of said shaft, and in this form of construction the shaft Sis provided with a camwheel 66, having a cam-groove 67, in which operates an arm 63, secured to a shaft 69, with which is also loosely connected a crankarm 70, with which is loosely connected a slotted link 71, which is pivotally connected with a crank-arm 72, mounted on the shaft 63, and in the operation of the shaft 8 the arm 72 is given an oscillating motion, and the shaft 63 is intermittently rotated by means of a spring-operated pawl 73, pivoted to the end of the crank-arm 72 and operating in connection with the ratchet-wheel 64, secured to the shaft 63, and at each movement of the crank-arm 72 the book-carriage 22 is gradually fed upwardly over the inclined track or way 20. In this form of construction the track or way 20 is provided with a pivoted angular finger 74, operated by a spring 75 for holding the books at the left-hand endof the carriage in an upright position, and the pivoted pawl 32 at the end of the arm 31, which is connected with the bar 29, is omitted, and the end of said arm itself operates to move the books successively from the carriage onto the support 34. It will be seen that the arm 31 projects far enough to engage one of the books when in the position shown in Fig. 6;

but in the backward movement of said arm the carriage has not been fed far enough up over the inclined track or way 20 to enable said arm to strike one of said books; but as the said arm reaches the limit of its movement outwardly or forwardly the carriage moves into position, and at its next reverse or backward movement another book is removed from the carriage onto the support 34. Afinger 76 is secured to the inner side of the track or way 20 and presses against the position of the second book when the book-carriage is in the position shown in Fig. 6 and prevents the removal of but one book from said carriage by the arm 31. The slotted link 71, which connects the crank-arm 7 O with the crank-arm 72, is provided with a stop 77, which limits the movement of the pin 78, by means of which the crank-arm is connected with said link, and by adjusting said stop the movement of these parts may be regulated as desired, so as to adjust the action of the machine to books of different thicknesses, it being understood that at each movement of the crank-arm 70 the book-carriage moves through a space equal to the thickness of one book.
It will be seen that the shaft 8 is provided with two of the cam-Wheels 66, and the arm 68, connected with the shaft 69, also operates the tables 35, as in the patent and application hereinbefore referred to; but the connection of these shafts with said tables forms no part of this invention and is therefore not shown and described.
The gage 60 on the book-support 34 is intended to limit the movement of the books 30 on said support as they are moved backwardly by the arm 31, and this gage, as shown in Fig. 2, is stationary; but in Figs. 11 and 12 I have shown a modification which is intended to prevent this gage from being covered with the glue or paste as the booksupport 34 is lowered into the glue or paste pot, said glue or paste pot being not shown in this application, but being shown and described in the patent and in the application hereinbefore referred to.
In the modification shown in Figs. 11 and 12 I secure to the holder of the book-support 34 an adjustable support 80, to which is pivoted at 81 an arm 82, the longer end of which projects forwardly and is provided with an angular projection 83, and secured to the holder of the book-support at 84 is a spring 85, which is inclined downwardly and outwardly and on which the arm 82 is adapted to hear when the forward or longer end thereof is raised. I also secure to one of the upper members 7 of the frame a downwardly-directed finger 86, and to one of the lower members of the frame 7 is secured an upwardly The position ofthe arm 82 in which it serves as a stop or gage to limit the backward movement of the books on the support 34 is that shown in dotted lines in Fig. 11, and as the support- 34 moves downwardly in the operation of pasting or gluing the sides of the book the finger 87 strikes the arm 82 forwardly of its pivotal support and forces it up into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 11, in which position the shorter end of said arm strikes and bears upon the spring 85 and is held in the position shown in said figure by friction, and in the upper movement of the support 34 as the book passes between the tables 35 the finger 86 strikes the spring 85 and forces it inwardly and releases the arm 82, which again falls back wardly into the position shown in dotted lines, in which position it is held by a lug or projection 88 on the adjustable support 80.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a machine of the class described, a frame, a vertically-movable shaft or support mounted therein, a horizontal book-support connected therewith, an inclined track or way supported at one end of the frame, a book-carriage mounted thereon and automatically movable thereon, means for limiting the movement of said carriage, devices for removing the books therefrom successively onto the book-support, a book back or cover support mounted above and connected with the book support and vertically movable therewith, tables supported in a horizontal plane and between which the book-support moves, and devices for removing a book back or cover from the support thereof, and placing it on said tables, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a machine of the class described, a frame, a vertically-movable book support mounted therein, tables supported in a horizontal position and between which the booksupport moves, means for placing a book on the support and moving it beneath said tables, a book back or cover support mounted above and connected with the book-support, and vertically movable therewith, and devices for removing a book back or cover from said support, and placing the same on said tables, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a machine of the class described, a vertically-movable book-support, a book-carriage movable transversely thereof, means for removing a book from said carriage and placing it on said support, tables mounted horizontally and between which the book-support moves, a vertically-movable book back or cover support mounted above and connected with the book-support, and devices for removing a book back or cover from said support, and placing the same on said tables, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a machine of the class described, a vertically-movable book-support, means for placinga book thereon, tables supported horizontally and between which the book-support moves, a support for book backs or covers mounted above and connected with the booksupport, tubular arms pivotally connected with the opposite corners of said book back or cover support, and provided with suction cups and tubes connected with said arms, an air-pump with which said tubes are connected, and means for raising and lowering said tubular arms as the book-support is raised and lowered so as to cause said suction-cups to engage with abook back or cover on said support and to lower the same onto said tables, substantially as shown and described.
5. A machine of the class described, comprising a frame, a horizontal main shaft mounted therein, a vertically-movable shaft or support connected with the main shaft, a book-support connected with said verticallymovable shaft or support and held in a horizontal position longitudinally of the frame, tables supported horizontally and between which the book-support moves, an inclined track or way arranged transversely at one end of the frame, a book-carriage mounted thereon, devices for successively removing the books from said carriage and placing the same on said support, a book back or cover support mounted above and connected with the book support and vertically movable therewith, and devices for removing a back or cover therefrom and placing the same on said tables, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a machine of the class described, a frame, a vertically-movable book-support, devices for placing a book thereon, a support for book backs or covers mounted above and vertically movable with the said book-support, means for supporting book backs or covers thereon, and for automatically moving the same forwardly, tables supported horizontally between which the book-support moves, and devices for removing a back or cover from the support thereof, and placing the same on said tables, substantially as shown and described.
7. In a machine of the class described, a frame, a verticallymovable book support mounted therein, means for placing a book thereon, tables arranged horizontally and between which the book-support moves, a book back or cover support mounted above and connected with the book-support, and provicled at its front edge with a transverse lip, and a sliding bar arranged transversely thereof and between which and said lip the book backs or covers are placed, and means for removing a back or cover from said support, and placing it on said tables, consisting of blocks pivotally connected with the opposite front corners thereof, tubular arms connected with said blocks, and provided with suction-cups, an angular arm also connected with one of said blocks at one end, and provided at the opposite end with a. roller which moves on a horizontal support, a weighted cord connected with said angular arm and operating to draw it in one direction, and means for forcing air through and withdrawing the same from said tubular arms, substantially as shown and described.
8. In a machine of the class described, a vertically-movable book-support, devices for placing a book thereon, tables supported in a horizontal position and between which the book-support moves, a book back or cover support mounted above and connected with the book-support, a stationary track or way 3'7 at one side of said book back or cover support, blocks 45 connected with the front corners of said book back or cover support, tubular arms 47 connected with said blocks and provided with suction-cups 48, an angular arm 50 connected with one of said blocks, and provided with a roller adapted to bear on said stationary track or way 37, a weighted cord connected with said angular arm, and means for forcing air through and removing it from the tubular arms 47, substantially as shown and described.
9. In a machine of the class described, a frame, a horizontal main shaft mounted therein, a vertically-movable shaft or support operated thereby, a vertically-movable book-support connected with said shaft or support, tables arranged in a horizontal position and between which the book-support moves, devices for automatically placing a book on said book-support, a vertically-movable book back or cover support mounted above and connected with the book-support, means for automatically feeding the book backs or covers forwardly, and devices for automatically removing one of said book backs or covers from the support thereof,
and placing the same on said tables, substantially as shown and described.
10. A machine of the class described, comprising a frame, a power-shaft mounted horizontally therein, a vertically-movable shaft or support operated by the power-shaft, a horizontal and vertically-movable book-support connected therewith, an inclined track or way arranged transversely at one end of the frame, a book-carriage mounted thereon, devices for removing a book from said carriage onto said support, tables supported horizontally and between which the book-support moves, a book back or cover support mounted above and connected with the booksupport, means for feeding the book backs or covers forwardly on said support, and devices for removing said book backs or covers automatically and successively from said support and depositing the same on said tables, substantially as shown and described.
11. A machine of the class described, comprising a frame, a power-shaft mounted therein, a vertically-movable shaft or support operated by the power-shaft, a horizontally and vertically movable book-support connected therewith, an inclined track or way arranged transversely at one end of the frame, a bookcarriage mounted thereon and adapted to move upwardly thereover, means for operating said book-carriage, devices for removing a book from said carriage onto said support, tables supported horizontally over the frame and between which the book-support moves, a book back or cover support mountedabove and connected with the book-support, means for feeding the book backs or covers forwardly on their support, and devices for removing said book backs or covers automatically and successively from said support and depositing the same from said tables, substantially as shown and described.
12. A machine of the class described, comprising a frame, a power-shaft mounted therein, a vertically-movable shaft or support operated by the power-shaft, a horizontal and vertically-movable book-support connected therewith, a transversely-inclined track or way at one end of the frame, a book-carriage mounted thereon, a longitudinally-movable bar mounted over the frame and operated by the power-shaft for passing a book from said carriage and placing it on said support, tables supported above the frame, and between which the book-support moves, a book back or cover support mounted above the frame and connected with said book-support, and means for removing the book backs or covers successively from their support and placing the same on said tables, substantially as shown and described.
13. In a machine of the class described, a vertically-movable book-s11 pport,a verticallymovable book back or cover support connected therewith and arranged thereover, tables supported in front of said book back or cover support, and devices for removing the book backs or covers from said support, and placing the same on said tables, substantially as shown and described.
