CARD-HOLDER Specification c1" Batters latent Patented Oct. 12, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Orro A. Baum, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Burlington, Des Moines coimt Iowa, have invented a new and useful Ca i- Holder, of which the following is a specifics tion.
The object of this invention is to rovide an improved construction for card elders and means for suspending a plurality of such card holders side by side and in series one-above the other so that all of one face of the front card in each holder is exposed to view.
My. invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in whi h Figure 1 is a front elevation illustratin a plurality of. series of: card holders of di ferent sizessuspended side by side from a common support, connected, and carried by adjustable means for suspending the com mon support. Fig. 2 is a front elevation illustrating the construction and means of connecting two card holders. Fig. 3 is a. rear elevation of the device shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross section of the indicated line 4-4 of Fig. 3, to which is added the supportin dehce common to the several series of elders. Fig. 5 is a detail front elevation, on a larger scale of portions of two holders side by side, andsup lied with means for connecting them A etachably. Figs. 6 and 7 are perspectives of a plurality of card holders such as are shown in front and rear elevation in 2 and3.
. In the construction 0 :the device as shown I provide a plurality of card holders, all of the same size, shape and construction and ads to interlock, or detachably engaged o c with another for suspending in series one above the other and in conjunctive suspension in the series on a common sup port. Each of the holders of this series preferably is rectangular in shape and with its test dimension horizontal. I provide another lurality of holders alike in size, shape an construction, and adapted for use, connection and suspension like unto the other series, but composedof holders of rectangular shape with their test dimensions v a I also provide for the conjunctive arrangement of the two styleaocf holders by making the length of the latter style bear a fixed relation to the width of he former style, so that in collecting and arranging the styles a rack may be formed ,havingla regular contour or plane margin on ea. side as illustrated in Fig. 1., Reference to Fig. 1 will disclose that five of the first style have a combined width equal to the combined length of three of the second Style, and I prefer to maintain such proportions. There is no difference in construction of the two styles of holders except as relates to width an breadth and such proportionof parts in respect thereof. n the construction of the holders as illustrated in detail in Figs. 2, 3 and 4 a skeleton frame is provided and is formed preferably of sheet metal by stamping. Each frame comprises a bottom bar 10, end bars 11, 12 int ral with. the bottom bar and at right ang s thereto, and a top bar 13 formed separately from and fixed to, and eonntwting Each botanglos to said bar and extending upwardly therefrom. Each of the end bars ll. 12 has .a rear flange 15, 16 bent at right angles thereto and extending inwardly therefrom. The ends of the flan 14. 15, 16 ad'ncent toeach-other are have ed so that said angos may be located. in the some lune without overlzgping at any point. '1 10 to .1 bar 13 is-fix .to-or formed integral with t to u ipor ends of the flanges 15, 16. Each of end are 11, 12 is provided with a from flange 17, 18 preiera lynarrower than the back flange 15, 16, bent at ri ht an les to said bars and having their on s bev ed. A very narrow flange 19 is formed on and bent upwardly from the forward margin of the bottom bar 10, and holes or slots are formed in the bottom bar adjacent to said narrow flange and near to the ends of the bar. A very narrow flange 20 is formed on and bent rear wardfrom the up mar in of the to bar 13 and is of less i iigth t han the saim top ban Hooks 21, 22 are formed integral witi also and are bent'rearword and downward relative to the upper margin of the top bar 13 at the ends of the flan e 20. The books 21, 22 are spaced apart 0 the breadth of the holder a-distance corresponding to the spaclug. apart of the holes of the bottom bar 10. so that the books on the topbar of one holder mayengage onerthe narrow flange 19 and extend through the holes or slots of the bottom bar 10 of another holder. A su ort: ing bar 23 is provided and preferably is made of sheet metal and triangular in cross sections. The supporting bar 23 is prpvided with a hook flange 24 extending u wardly from the lower margin of its front ace, and said hook flange is adapted to receive and be engaged by hooks 21, 22 of the holders. Hooks 25, 26, preferably made of wire, are mounted in and project downward from the end portions of the supporting bar 23, and are adapted to be detachably and ad'ustably secured to chains 27, 28, at either end of said bar. The chains 27, 28 are adapted to be secured to a suitable sup ort 29, such as a picture mold, by any suitable means, such as picture wire 30, 31, and hooks 32, 33 thereon. I
In order-to display a large number of assorted cards, each sort being represented by a pluralit of cards, I collocate a plurality of one sty e of the holders, such-as A in Fig. 1, in series one above the other and connected y an engagement of books 21, 22 with flanges 19 and holes in the bottom bar 10 and suspend said series from the supporting bar 23 by engagement of the uppermost hooks 21, 22 with the hook flan e 24. The rack may be composed entirely of the holders of style A, or I may employ series of holders of style B, Fig. 1, arranged promiscuously or regularly in respect of the series of st le A, in which the holders are connected in like manner and suspended on the bar 23 common to all the series I then connect the various series at their lower ends or intermediate of their ends b double wire hooks 34 engaging the front jacent holders. In Fig. 1 show the double wire hooks connecting the lower end ortions of the several series, and in Fig. 5 I s ow the same in detail as applied to the front flanges 17, 18 of adjacent holders of the same. style. Having assembled the holders as shown in Fig. 1, each of them can be supplied with cards, such as post cards, some 0 the cards being recumbent and carried by holders of style A, and others of the cards bein erect and carried by holders of the style In either event all of each card is visible from the front except such small portions as may be partially concealed by the front flanges 17, 18 and the very narrow flange 19, and it is in order to dis lay the largest possible portion of each card to view that the flange 19 is made very narrow. The narrow flange 20 is provided to engage the hook flange 24 or the narrow flange 19 and relieve the strain by supporting the load of cards from the hooks 21, 22, to the end that said hooks may not be broken and yet will serve the function of securel connecting the various holders of series an suspending them from the bar 23. The rack or case composed of the pluan es 17, 18 of adrality of holders may be varied in size, appearance and configuration by varying tie arran ement and number of holders.
If esired a plate or sheet 35 of transparent material such as mica, celluloid or glass may be mounted in each of the holders infront of the collection of cards therein, and at the rear of the front flanges 17, 18, to rotect said cards from dust, fly specks an the like.
Each of the plates 35 is formed with a notch 36 in its u per margin, and intermediate of its on s, to provide convenient access to the cards at the rear thereof.
