936,172. Specification of Letters Patent.
.. Applic'ation filed OctoberIO, 1908. semi 30. 457.169.
I To all whom it may conccm':
Be'it known that I, JULIUS SCHAGHT, citizen of the United States, residing at New garment fasteners and consists in the con-,
'ofthe shoe or garment, and by a single re-' York, in the. county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Fasteners," of which the following is a specification.
The present invention pertains to shoe. or
struction ofa fastener, comprising eyelets and hooks that are so arranged relative to one another, that by a'single operation, consisting in the drawing upward or stretching of a flap carrying the hooks, the hooks become automatically engaged with the eyelets, thereby eifecting at once the fastening verse operation the shoe or garment is un= fastened.
in Which similar reference numerals denote' corresponding parts andlin whichare-to be drawn together.
Figure 1 is aplan view of mynew fastener as applied to ashoe; Fig; 2 is'a side view ther Qi; Fig. 3 'is a vertical section on line 3 3 ofFig. ,4; Fig. 4i is a cross section on line 4.4 of Fig, 3; Fi g. 5 is a to plan view of a detail in enlarged scale; Fig. 6 is a'top' plan view ofthe modified construction; Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section, Fig. 7
is a cross section on Fig.7 similarto that of Fig. 4', andfFig. 8 a bottom plan view thereof. 1 I In the drawing 1 is the toe portion of the shoe upper and 2 and 3 are'the two partsof the shoe upper that in fastening the shoe .4 and 5 are flies or strips of leather like attached to the parts 2 and 3, which at the lower end may be secured to or may be integral with a piece6 secured to the shoe upper. These flies haveeach suitably attached [to it aset of eyelets 7 formed of sheet metal or the like; The eyelets are so arranged that the openin therein are in lanes perpendicular to t e surface. of the dies.
Sewed to or otherwise, suitably secured inside of the toe portion of the shoe upper :is .a fla 8 of leather or other suitable mate- To the inner surface .of the flap 2 two lateral-rows of hooks are secured, the
. To make my invention more clear thesame or thehooks in each row being spaced in conformity with the eyelets and arranged longi. tudinally with the flap, their open ends. directed downward to allow of their engagement with the eyelets from above as the flap is being" stretched or drawn upward.
. To hold the flap while drawing it upward close to the eyeletsand to effect the engagement of the'hooks and eyelets, I provide a Patented 0012.5, 1909.
slide 9, the lateral ends of which are bent upon themselves forming guides 10 that are .adapted to constantly be in frictional 'en-. gagement with the outer lateral surfaces of one, two or more eyelets in each. row. Formed int a1 with or secured to the slide 9 are latera ears 11 that project -upward from the surface thereof and in which two central rollers 12, 13 are journaled one above the. other, which rollers permit the passage of the hooks at both sides thereof. The flap 8'*is guided between the slide 9 and bent ends '10, and being bent upon itself is passed between the rollers. To the rear end ofthe slide 9 a bow or arm 14 is attached which serves as a handle for the shifting of the slide upward or r arward.-
' The mode of operation is as follows faces of the eyelets, prevent the flap from being moved away from above the eyelets and cause the hooks of the flap which, by
this operation become gradually unfolded,
to automatically engage the eyelets (as 1 shown in Fig.:3).' The bent ends 10 of the slide also draw the eyelets of the opposed flies together to adjust them in proper pos tionin which the automatlcal; engagement of thehooks is possible. jiWhen it is desired to Iiiifasten' the shoe or garment the upturnedwndof the flap that pro'ects forward from the rollers is asped, an by drawing it forward-., the hoo s become automatically disen aged flfim the -eyelets.-
In i s. 6, 7 and 8 a modlfication is shown, in'whicfi the flies 15 have each attached to it a set of eyelets 16, the eyelets of one set beingdis'placed to those of the opposite set.
The flap 17, instead of two lateral rows, has I only one central longitudinal row'of hooks 16. Inthe present construction the flies 15 central longitudinal line. The slide 18, in-
stead of having two central rollers, has two.
pairs of lateral rollers 19, 20 which permit the passage of the hooks between them while.
the flap is drawn rearward or forward; As'
in 'the first example, the slide 18 has bent edges 10 that are adapted to be in frictional engagement with one or a number of eyelets l6 and to thereby serve as a guide for the slide and to hold the flap 17 down upon the eyelets, permitting their engagement with the hooks 16. n
It is understood that theeonstruction may be still more modified in various other ways without deviating from the spirit of my invention.'
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a shoe or gar} ment having two parts to be drawn. together, of eyelets secured to the said parts, a central tended or unfolded, hooks secured to the inside of said flap and adapted to automatically engage said eyelets at the unfolding or extension. of the flap and to disengage therefrom at the folding of the same.
2; The combination with a shoe or garment having two parts to be drawn together,
of eyelets secured to the said parts, a central,
flap secured to the garment or. shoe and adapted to overlap the eyelets when (unfolded, hooks secured to the inside of said flap and adapted to automaticall'y engage draw the opposite eyelets in said eyelets at the extension or unfolding of the flap and to disengage therefrom at the folding of the same, and means to hold the flap while it is unfolded close to the eyelets.
3. The combination with a shoe or garment having two parts to be drawn together,
of eyelets secured to the said parts, a central at the extension or unfo ding of the flap and to disengage therefrom at the folding of the same, means to hold the-flap while it is un.
folded close to the eyelets, and means to position for engagement with the hooks,
4. The combination with a shoe or garment having two parts to be drawn together, 1 of eyelets secured to the said parts, a central flap secured to the shoe or garment and adapted to overla tended or unfolde hooks secured to the inside of said flap and adapted to automatically engage said eyelets at the unfolding or extension of the flap and to disengage therefrom at the foldin of the same, and a slide formed with pro ections to friction- -ally engage the eyelets and to cause their adjustment in properv position and serving as a guide for the flap.
p In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' SCHACHT.
