UNITED STATES reassess. oormit, or NEW resin, N. Y.
BANK-NOTE TESTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1909.
Application filed February 18, 1909. Serial No. 478,703.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISABELLA COHEN, a citizen of the Empire of Austria-Hungary, residing in New York, in the borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bank-Note Testers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved tester or apparatus for testing the genuineness of bank-notes, said apparatus being intendedto be used by banks and other institutions for quickly distinguishing a forged or spurious'bank-note from a genuine one; and for this purpose the invention consists of a bank-note tester which comprises a supporting-bar provided with a handle, a magnifying-lens, swiveled to the front-end of said bar, a movable stand adapted to slide on the supporting-bar, and means on said stand for holding the genuine and the spurious bank-notes side by side so as to compare {hem by looking through the magnifyingens.
The invention consists further of certain details of construction which will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in'the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1- 'tester,-which bar is provided with a handle it at the under-side. To the front-end of the supporting-bar a is applied a magnifyingpermits the lens to be turned on the axis of 1ts post, as required, in looking at special portions of the bank-notes to be examined.
On the rear-portion of the supporting-bar I the swivel-connection of the The. swivel-connection of the a is guided a transverse frame or stand 6 on which a genuine and spur ous bank-note can be placed .s1de-by-s1de, said stand being guided by a recess of its base-rail b on the supporting-bar a and held thereon by 'a spring-actuated friction-device b having a handle I), as shown in Fig. 3. The supporting-frame or stand?) is formed of two parts 6* which are connected'by the baserail 6 and agrooved rail d on which the bank-notes can be supported side-by side, the genuine one preferably on the left-hand and the spurious one on the ri ht-hand side, or. vice versa. Each part b 'IS provided with a button or knob e at its lower end for moving the stand I) conveniently forward or backward on the rail (1. The lower edges of the bank-notes rest in the groove of the transverse rail (1, and against the two stands and are held at the upper edges by hooks 6, said hooks being connected by means of two pivot-links 6 with the upper ends of springactuated arms 0 which are bent into springcoils at the lower part and attached to across-bar of the stand. The hooks 0 yield by their spring-connection with the stand sufficiently to engage the upper edges of the bank-notes, asindicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. Midway between the stands is arranged a separating device 7, which is made in the shape of a wire loop having a pointed end, which latter is inserted into a hole at the center of the base-rail. The-separating device servesas an abutment for the ends of the bank-notes but keeps them separated from each other at their meeting edges.
For examining a spurious bank-note it'is placed in position on one stand, with its lower edge inserted into the grooved rail of the same and the inner edge placed against the separating device The upper edge is then placed in engagement with the yielding hook e. The genuine bank-note is then placed side-by-side with the spurious one on the second stand and held thereon by the yielding hook, in the same manner as-the spurious bank-note. The bank-notes are then compared by means of the magnifyinglens, which is. turned on its swivel-connection with the supporting-bar in the direction of one bank-note and then in the direction of the other, so that the differences in the bank-notes can be readily detected and the spurious or forged bank-notes readily detected.
The device forms a convenient means for 'detectingiforged' bank-notes to be used by] banks, moneyed institutions, {and wholesale business-concerns in which a large number of'bank-notes'are handled.
Ha'ving ;thus described my invention, I
claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent; 1
.1. In a-bank-note tester, a bank-note supporting frame comprlsing a base-rail, two
separate upright stands on the same,' a
' grooved rail connect-ingsaid stands for supporting the lower edges of. the bank'-notes, and yielding hooks for engaging over the npper fedges of thebank-notes. 2; y In a bank-note tester,' ,'abank-note supporting'frame comprising a basewail, two
separate upright stands .on the; same, a
edges of the bank-notes, and a separating device located midway between the stands.
3. In a bank-note tester, a bank-note supportmg frame comprising a base-rail, two separate upright stands 011 the same, a grooved rail 1 connecting said stands and 'spacedzabove said base-rail spring pressed arms secured to the stands, 11nks connecting the free ends of the arms, hooks secured to the links for engaging over the upper edge of a bank-note, and a separating device 10- cated'on thebase-rail and extending above the grooved rail midway between the stands. In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
