CHARLES M00. CHAPMAN AND JAMES E. WOODIBRIDGE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PACKING-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1909.
Application filed January 2, 1903. Serial No. 137,462.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES MoC. CHAPMAN and JAMEs E. WVoonBRIocE, both residing in New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Packing-Cases,
of which the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters representing like parts in all the figures.
Our invention relates to packing and storing vessels and particularly to vessels of the character intended to hold individual devices.
The object of our invention is to provide cheap, simple and effective means for holding, containing and protecting certain devices capable of being packed therein.
WVith these ends in view our invention consists in the packing box, case or receptacle having the features and construction hereafter described and claimed.
In the drawings accompanying this description: Figure 1 is a vertical section of the box or case taken on the line l-l of Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the box or case taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, in this figure the device to be held and contained in the case is shown in elevation except the disk thereof.
The box or case is indicated by A, and is provided with a central bore or well in which depend the legs a, of a Nernst lamp burner, it being understood that this box or case is particularly intended to hold and protect such burner. The several parts of said burner are indicated by reference character a. Said box at its top is provided with a circumferential groove 5, the vertical wall of which is screw-threaded to receive the cover B. Around the mouth of the wall, said box is also grooved to receive the disk of the burner, or other device of like charactor.
The top or cover of the box B, is applied by means of the internal screw-threads, adjacent its open end. This means of connection is not essential and is illustrated herein merely as one of many ordinary means which may be employed for the purpose. The cover is provided on the inside of its top portion with a rounded projection D, which may be of the same material as the box cover and integral therewith. This projection, however, may be made of elastic material, such as rubber, in which event the same would be properly seated in a groove in the cover; or said projection may be a bowed spring, in which event the ends thereof should be free to slide in grooves or bracket pieces on the inside of the cover.
0, indicates a combined guard and brace, intended for the protection of the device contained in the box, and also for the purpose of rigidly and securely holding said device in the box. This guard or brace is preferably made of spring steel, and in structure consists of the vertical legs 0, c and the cross-bar 0 The proportions of this guard or brace should be such as to elevate the cross-bar slightly above the highest part or portion of the device contained in the box, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. This has for its purpose to enable the cross bar to be slightly bowed, depressed or buckled so as to insure proper engagement between the same and the projection D, on the cover and also between the guard or brace and the device held in the box. This construction also permits the cover to be properly seated or screwed down fully into connection with the box A. The cheapest construction of our device is conceived to be a projection D, integral with the cover and a guard or brace of spring steel; but, said guard or brace may be made of wood with or without spring quality and the projection made of rubber or spring steel, as before stated. The dimensions of the guard or brace are such as to enable the legs to closely confine the top portion of the burner, or other device, contained in the box thereby preventing any tilting or lateral movement of said device.
From the above description it will be obvious that when the cover B is screwed upon the top part of the box, the rounded projection D will engage the cross-bar bridge 0 depress the same, and hold the guard or brace firmly against the disk of the burner, or other device, thus preventing any vertical movement of the latter. The seat around the mouth of the box, afforded by the groove 0, for the reception of the disk of the burner, prevents any lateral movement of the latter.
Having thus described our invention what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A receptacle comprising a body-part and cover, the former having means at its mouth for suspending a given article there in so that it will be held free from. contact With said receptacle; in combination With a device for engaging the top surface of said article; and means carried by and projecting from the inside of the cover into engage:- ment With said device and cooperating therewith so as to create pressure thereon and force the same upon said article to hold the latter rigidly in place and against movement in the receptacle.
2. A receptacle comprising a body-part and cover, the former having means at its mouth for suspending a given article therein-o free from contact with the Walls of the well thereof; in combination with a resilient device for engaging the top surface of said article; and rigid means, carried by the inside of the top; of the cover, for engaging" and op'eratln-g upon said device When the a cover 1s placed on sard receptacle and before 1 it finally sets in place, whereby yielding pressure upon said article may be created and.
maintained so as to hold the same from movement in the receptacle.
A receptacle comp-rising a body-part and cover, the former provided with means :at its mouth for suspending a given article as to force its legsagainst and trictional'ly hold the said article from movement.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto signed our names in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
