OF SANDUSKY, 012110, ASSIGNQB TO GEO. J. SCHADE, OF SAN- DUSKY, OHIO.
JOINT FOB WIRE FENCES OR REINFOBCING FABRICS.
Application filed January 23, 1908.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Get. 5, 190%. Serial No. 412,241.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES F. GILLILAND, a citizen of the United States, resident of Sandusky, county of Erie, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Joints for ire Fences or Rein forcing Fabrics, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates to devices for fastening together the crossed wires of a wire fence or wire reinforcing fabric, its object being to .provide means for accomplishing such purpose which shall be economical in construction, simple in its application and which will prevent the wires after having been secured, from moving relatively to each other.
Such invention consists of means hereinafter fully described and particularly set forth in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail, certain mechanism embodying the invention, the disclosed means constituting but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be applied.
In said annexed drawing :Figure 1 represents an elevation of asheet metal blank which is used to form the clamp for securing the crossed wires together after the manner of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a front elevation of a portion of two crossed wires secured in accordance with my invention. Figs. 3 and t represent end elevations of the joint so formed. Fig. 5 represents a partial section taken upon the plane indicated by line V-V in Fig. 9.. Fig. 6 is a section on an enlarged scale taken upon line VI-VI, Fig. 5.
The blank A which forms the clamp for securing the two wires together, is formed with two lateral projections a a and is made of sheet metal of suitable thickness. The projections a a are .bent to form loops a and c which respectively surround two adjacrossed wires B Each loop 1S formed with a pro eccent portions of the two and G.
tion, at a formed upon its inner surface and the adjacent parts of the wires are formed with indentations c a which are engaged by said projections. Such engaging projections and depressions prevent longitudinal movement of the wires in their respective loops and hence prevent movement of such wires relatively to each other.
These projections and depressions are preferably formed by striking the loops when in place on the wires with a suitable tool, thereby simultaneously forming such required projections and depressions, as will be readily understood.
As shown in the drawing a and depression a are made quite narrow as compared with the diameter of the wire and are elongated, such elongation extending in the direction of the axis of the wire in which the depression is formed. The length of the depression is made such that it will be somewhat greater than the lineal length of the are which would be formed in the wire if bent at such point of depression in the ordinary usage of the joint, and its width is less than the length of the chord of the cross-sectional circle, which coincides with the bottom of the-depression, as shown in Fig. 6. By means of such arrangement, no broken fibers are present in the bent portion and such bending will therefore not effect a breaking of the wire so readily as would be the case if the depression were made wider, shorter and transversely of the wire.
I, therefore, particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention 1.. In a device of the character described, the combination with a wire or rod, of a clamp provided with a projecting portion bent around said wire or red to form a loop; the latter being provided upon its interior the projection surface with an elongated projection, and
said wire being formed with a corresponding elongated indentation, said projection and depression being in engagement with each other and being placed so as to extend in the direction of the axis of said wire.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a wire or rod, of a. clamp provided with a projecting port-ion bent around said Wire or rod to form a loop; the latter being provided upon its interior surface with an elongated projection which is narrow as compared With the diameter of the Wire, the latter being formed with a corresponding elongated depression, such projection and depression being in engagement with each other and having its major dimen- 'sion extending in the direction of the axis of the Wire.
Signed by me, this 7th 908.
0 day of Jannary,
JAMES F. GILLILAND. Attested by- MARTHA LINDER, M. T. FUSINGER.
