In order to holdthe pl'htias' in different positions according to the Ventilating opening required, a toothed bar lfiildnpt'ed to be 4 engagedibyn lip or projection 14 on oneof the lates, is arranged transversely in the opening-designed to be closed by the plates,

By means of this catch the elosin plates may be adjusted to any desired position accord-11g to the opening requn'ed.
ei' the catch should be so 0011-, structed so hat if the ventilator is n17 in the reverse position to that shown in ig. 1, as is sometimes necessary when wind guards are uttachd to the ventilator 'frame, the catch will 'opemtc to hold the plates in any position desired, either entirely up or par- 'nprn ramc,
tially down. It is preferred that the outer platr I should be made of such a width that a up )or end will project behind a guard plate 0 when the p ates are ully raised.
It will be observed that w on the plates are fully raised the flunige at the lower edge of lho inner plate 0 wil make a tight joint with a-stop strip 11, a similar joint being fnrlnml between thetlanges 8 and 9 of-the two plates and that the up or ad e of the outer plate will pro'ect be Lind e guard planlti so that a t ig 1t closure of the openmg is formed which will effectually preyent the entrance of smoke, etc.
The wire netting 3 is usually secured in a rahla-t formed in one side of the bars forming-tho frame. In applying in improvemeat the bars of the sections behind which the plates lie when folded are cut away or made thinner no that the aide oove 7 may he formed in the inn r iizces o the bars forming the frame sectious so that my imn-orouu-nt can bc readilyapplied to ventialing frann-s 'liOW in use.
I claim herein as my invention:
1. removable ventilator for car windows onus-sis ing of a frame, a plurality of plates loving a widthapproximately equal to the width of one of the bars forming the frame, adjacent plates being provided with llllt'lltfl'ltlll}: means whereby one plate may he shii'trd by the other, a plurality of guide grooves for tho rrroption of the ends of the plates ill'tlulltllh' adjacent to the bar or l'runw; i'nrmhor behind which the .plates lie wluai-tfohlml and extending across said bar or uujiulaer, and a bar extending across the oprnrug m the frame and adapted to support t nplates as against injury.
t3. ventilator ha ring in comhination an a plurality of guiding grooves urral gwl at. opposite ends of the frame, groo ,es extending across the bottom bar of tho rame. a plurality of p ates: having a \vidti approxnnately equal to that of the bottx lm har ofithe the plates and rarne and having their ends arranged in said ooves, adjacent plates being provided wit interlocking devices whereby one plate is shifted by! the other in its movement, a toothed bar arranged across the opening of the frame and a h olfi projection on one of the plates yicl ingt held in engagementtwithithe bar. 8. A ventilator having in combination an open frame, a lurality of guiding oors at the ends ot thc frame, a plum plates having their ends arranged in the grooves, interlockin r means on adjacent plates whercb one p ate may shift the other plate, a toot ted bar extending acrose -the frame in the direction of themovement of adjacent to the plane of movement of the inner plate, and a lip or projection on the outer plate extending across the inner plate to engage said bar. t A
4. A ventilator consisting ofan .oplm frame, a plurality of plates arranged totmo've intparallel plane's, ad acent plateabeing prov1 ity of ed with interlocking means whereby a Q plate may be shifted by an adjacent plate, a or extending in the direction of movement of the plates, and means on' one ofthe outer dates of the series adaptedto engnge said air and support the plates in any desired position.
5. A ventilator consis frame, a plurality of plot in para] cl planes, plate to the next ment of the outer mately equal to its the direction of movement of the plat'eoand ing of .an open adjacent to the plane of mgvexnent, oLthe arranged to more means for connecting a" inner plate on the tmoveplate a distance approxi r width, at barextend ngin mnerplate and means on the outer "late of i i the series adapted to-cngag'e said; and support the plates in any n testimony whereof,
