Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 2, 1909 Serial No. 470,480. a
.To all it may Be it known that I, BiinJAMm F. Scimitar, a citizen of the United States, residing at Modesto, in the county of Stanislaus and State of California, have invented a new and useful-CushionedStock; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention about to be set forth and claimed pertains to a new and useful gun stock, and particularly to arecoil device,
adapted for relieving the effects of the recoil 1 of the gun, against the shoulder of the per-1 son who is using the same, and the invention in its fundamental characteristics has for its principal object to provide a simple and efficient device, comprising a leather covering for the stock, which moves with the movable base portion of the stock, between which and the body of the stock springs are interposed.
A further object ofthe invention is to pro- 1 vide means for guiding the movable base portion of the stock, when the said portion and the body of the stock are in the act of comuig together, which is caused by the firing of the gun. This means for guiding the movable base portion is fixed to said portion,
and comprises a plurality of metallic meni- V hers, which aredisposed equidistances apart appended claims.
around the body of the stock, and between the same and the leather covering, as clearly shown in the drawings.
This nvention comprises further objects and combinations of elements, which will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will be pointed'out by the The features, elements and the arrangement thereof, which constitute the above entitled invention, may be -changed' and varied, that is to say, in an actual reduction to practice with the understanding that the changes and variations accruing from said reduction to practice are limited to the scope of the appended claims.
To obtain a full and correct understanding of the details of construction, combinations of features, elements and advantages,
reference is to be had to' the hereinafter setforth descriptipn "and. the accompanying ,Stock, showing the leather covering laced draw ngs in eonneetiontherewith, Where in Figure 1 is a perspective view of the gun thereabou-t; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the gun stock, showing clearly the plurality of guiding members which are carried by the movable base portion of the stock, and showing portions of Patented Oct. 5, 1909- the singlevolute helix springs. Fig. 3 is a y longitudinal sectional view taken partly through the body of the stock and through the movable base portion thereof, showing more clearly the said single volutehelix springs. Fig. 4.- is a sectional view on line 4-4'0f Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional View on line 55 of Fig. 3.
In regard to the drawings, wherein similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the several illustrations, 1 designates the -stock portion of a' gun, provided with a movable base portion 2,with which the leather covering 3 is carried, and is also which is secured to the body of the stock, by vmeans of suitable screws or other fastening means 12,-w-hile the central bored portion 8 receives loosely the screw member 13, which is carried by, but loosely, with, the movable base portion 2 of the stock. This movable base portion 2 comprises three members 15,
16 and 17, the member 15 forms the extreme bottom of the said movable base portion, and is ornamented upon its bottom face, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The member 17 1s a plate,-from which the piston rods 18 1'0- ject, which extendinto the bored port ons 7 and 9, and through the hollow extensions 10, as shown clearly-in Fig. 3. The member 16 is formed of leather, or some similar material, which is clamped between the plate 17 and the member 15, and is held therebetween by means of the screws 19, which penetrate through the three members, and en age the threaded apertures 01'' open ngs 20 o the said plate 17, as clearly shown in Fig. The member 16 is provided with a central openingl21, in which the head of the screw member 13 is designed to have a slight movement, eifected by the recoil of the gun, and,
when the head of the screw member contactswith the face 22 of the member 15, the said screw member extends into the bored portion 8 of the stock; this is caused by the recoil of the gun, as will be clearly evident.
Secured by the screws or other fastening means 4, .to the periphery of the member 16, is a plurality of guiding members or blades 23, which are disposed at equidistances a art, about the said movable base portion an the body of the stock, and are adapted for the purpose of guiding the movable base portion when the said base portion and stock are caused to come to ether, incident to the recoil of the gun. hese guiding members or blades 23 aredisposed in recesses 24: formed in the members 16 and 17, as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings.
Surrounding the pistons 18 are single volute helix springs 25, in other Words, springs that are cone shaped in contour, the ends of which are frictionally held or soldered or fastened by any other suitable means in apertures 26 in the said plate or member 17, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. The said screw member 13 is provided with threads 27, which are engaged by the circular threaded nut 28, which is disposed and guided in the bored portion 8 of the body of the stock, as disclosed clearly in Fig. 3.
From the foregoing, the essential features, elements and the operation of the device, together with the simplicity thereof, will be clearly apparent.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a gun stock cushioning device, said stock comprising a body portion and a movable base portion, a leather covering for the gun stock .carried by and movable with said movable base portion, resilient means mterposed between the movable base portion and the body portion, said base portion hav- 2. In a gun stock cushioning device, said stock comprising a body portion and a movable base portion, a leather covering for the gun stock carried by and movable with said base portion, said body portion having bored portions and provided with a plate having hollow extensions disposed in said bored portions, said movable base portion having piston rods extending into said hollow extensions and bored portions, single volute helix springs coiled about said piston rods, said movable base portion having a central screw-member or rod, said body portion having a central bored portion to receive said screw member, means carried by said screw member and disposed in said central bored portionand designed to engage said plate to prevent the detachment of the movable base portion, and guiding members or blades carried by the movable base portion and inter- I posed between the body portion and the leather covering.
8. In a gun stock recoil device, a movable base portion having piston rods, said stock having bored portions to receive said rods, and springs interposed between the stock and the movable base portion and about said rods, said movable base portion having-re-v cesses, a plurality of members or blades secured therein for guiding the base portion, and a covering for the gun stock.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
Witnesses:
