UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR ANDERSON, OF-IRONWOOD, MICHIGAN.
NAIL AND BOARD FULLER.
application filed March 29, 1909. Serial No. 486,309.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct.
a top view of my device, shown in position for work upon a sidewalk stringer or a oist. Fig. 2 is a-sideelevation of the device shown in the action of breaking up a sidewalk. Fig. 3'is a section on the line o-'a in Fig. 1
' showing how the claw of the device may be .20
applied asa nail or spike puller, the frame Referring to the drawing by reference numera-ls, the device involves a frame composed of two cheek-plates 1, 1, spaced apart and secured together by two cross bars 2, 2, on which rotate two rollers 3, both near the base of the frame. Higher up in the frame is retained by a cotter pin 5, a pivot pin 4, on which is fulcrumed a forked lever 6, which may have a wooden handle 7 to give all required leverage without making the device objectionably heavy. The front end of the lever is provided with two upwardly curved claws 8 spaced far enough a'partto straddle the regular stringers 9 on which sidewalk planks 10 are spikes. At the junction of said clawsis formed'a V-sha ped notch 12 adapted for engagement with the heads of spikes and nails in pulling them out of. either the planks or the stringers, as will be, understood by looking at Fig. 3 where the tool is in'position for pulling the spike 13. When the lever .is
- thus applied as a spike puller it is removed from theframe by first removing the pin 4. In Fig. 2 is shown how the lever while in the frame and while the rollers 2 are resting event the spikes are pulled out afterward, as in Fig. 3. As fast as the planks are loosened on the stringer, the claws are ushed in unde'r-the planks 10 and raise t em from the stringer 9, pulling the spikes with them,'ex'- cept if the planks are so decayed as to let the spike heads. pull through, them, in whlch the toolis pushed forward riding with its rollers on the stringers and the frame cheeks guiding at both sides thereof.- Of course,
the stringers 9 represent also floor joists where a floor is to be removed, and studding Where sheating or lath is to be removed from a wall, or boardsfrom rafters of a roof etc.
For all of the last named purposes the lever may also be used without thewheeledframe to support it, or it may have a support without wheels.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination with a frame having two supporting rollers adapted to rollalong a timber to. hold the frame upright and guiding portions .on the frame straddling the timber,-of a forked lever fulcrumed 1n the frame and having its forked porton curved upward and in straddling position to the timber. I V
2. The combination with a frame having twosupporting rollers adapted to roll along a timber to hold the frame upright and guiding portions on the frame straddling the timber, of a forked lever fulcrumed 1n the frame and having its forked port on curved upward and in straddling posltion to the timber, said lever beirp'g easily detachable from the frame and pro ilded at the ]11I1Ct-1OI1 of the fork with a V-shaped notch for pulling nails and spikes.
3. In combination a supporting frame having means forguidingitalong a joist or other timber, a lever fulcrumed in the frame and having its shortest end formed with two.
long clawsadapted to straddle the timber and pull or tear therefrom planks, boards and the like nailed across the timber and a front and rear roller supporting the frame.-
4. A device for the purposes set forth, the same comprising a lever bifurcated at one end into two arms with intervening space for rafters, studdings, joists and stringers, said arms bein curved from its straddling position towar the side of the timber upon which the lever operates, a carriage pivotally supporting the lever and having two rollers supporting it on the timber, and side flanges extending lower than the lower sides of the rollers, to act as guides at the SIdQS of the timber. y
In testimony whereof I affix my signature,
in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR ANDERSON.
