NICHOLAS V. MORELLE Letters .Patent No. 93,548, datedAugust 10,1869.
IMPROVED STUMP-EXTRACTOR A ND PRESSCOMBINED.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Ta all whom it may concern Be it known that we, NrcHoLAs V. MORELLE and LOUIS J. MORELLE, of Newark, Rock county, in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and` useful Improvements in a Combined Stump-Puller and Press; and We do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings, are suiiicient to enable any person` skilledin the art or science to -which it most nearly appeitains, to make and use our said invention or improvements', without further invention or experiment.
. The nature of our invention and improvements con# s ists in the construction and arrangement of a combined stump-puller and press, herein below fully described, referenee being had tol the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective viewl ofthe machine complete, in the combined characterof stump-puller and press;
. Figure 2 is' a vertical section of the same; and
Figure 3 is a similar view, except having the pressing-device removed, so as to exhibit the machine when ready for use in pulling stumps.
Similar. letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. y Letter A represents the sills of the machine.
B, the posts.
Dare gil-ders, halved on and bolted thereto.
C, the cap or plate, tenoned to the posts B.
a are braces to the posts B, and y b are detachable horizontal lateral supporters for the sills, one of which is removed when the machine is drawn or moved (placed) over a stnmpthat is to be lpulled by it.V
Ev represents a vertical round metallic shaft, which rotates in suitable boxes secured to the cap O and girders D, as shown in the drawings. j
Said shaft is actuated by the arms or sweeps e, which are rigidly fixed to the upper end or top there; of, for which purpose such device may be employed as shall best afford the necessary strength and convenience of adaptation for the purpose iny question.
The shaft E is provided with a suitable rope or chain, H, one end of which is rigidly fxed thereto.
.The other is passed over the guide-pulley I of the pivoted swinging frame c2, then downward under the pulley k of the hook h, and upward, terminating at and secured to the hook s, fixed to the cap O, all as shown in the drawings.
'lhe foregoing description fulfils the conditions neces- "fulfilling substantially the following conditions:
A frame, M, is fitted tok the girders D, and held in position by detachable blts, as shown in the drawings.
placed under said frame, of equal horizontal diameter with the width of said ii'ame, and provided with afalse bottom. or plunger, centrally provided with a 'vertical bolt, made fast thereto, passing through the bottom of said frame in a suitable slot, and having an eye at erted by the plunger upon the contents of the tub, expressing every particle of juice from any article which appropriately may be subjected thereto. j j
This press will be very convenient and useful in making cider. or wine in a small way. When not Wanted for this purpose, thel frame yM, tub L, and plunger may be laid aside. The machine will then bein suitable condition for'employment in the field for extracting stumps, in which the operation is as follows: Y
Remove one of the supporting-bars b, draw or place v the machine astraddle of the stump, replace the bar l, unwind thel rope from the shaft E, let down the hook h, so .as to engage with a chain first passed around orv p ress, the arrangement and employment of the shaft E, rope or chain H, pulley I, pivoted frame c2, pulley' k, hool: h, frame m, tub and plunger L, the frame consisting of the parts A BG D, a b, and arms e, when the `whole is constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth, to operate as specified.
