Description

E. JORDALEN.
SUPPORT FOR CARRIAGE TOPS.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 7, 190a.
935,369. Patented Sept. 28, 1909.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELLSWORTI-I JORDALEN, OF STOUGI-ITON, WISCONSIN.
SUPPORT FOR CARRIAGE-TOPS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLswoRTH J ORDALEN, citizen of the United States, residing at Stoughton, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Carriage-Tops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a support or rest for the. bow of a carriage top, and has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive device which will be strong and durable and adapted to cushion a carriage top and prevent the bows from being bent or broken in lowering the top or when the vehicle is passing over a rough road.
A further object of the invention is to support the top in higher position than ordinary, so that it will prevent the top from being punctured by the poles or shafts of rigs coming behind. The ordinary support for a carriage top allows the same to drop so low that the shafts of a rig behind are apt to strike and puncture or tear the top. This invention holds the top so high that such injury can not occur. The device also improves the appearance of the buggy.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a side elevation of a buggy provided with the improvement, the top being shown in full lines in lowered position, and in dotted lines in raised position; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device removed from the carriage, and illustrating the manner of its application to the rail bolt; Fig. 3 is a detail in section showing the top part of the device with the rubber strike piece thereon.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates the rail belt of the carriage, to which the device is applied. This is square, as usual.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November7, 1908.
Patented Sept. 28, 1909. Serial No. 461,520.
The device forming the subject of this invention comprises a metal piece or strap the rail bolt, whereby the attachment is supported in vertical position at all times, the rail bolt being properly set for this purpose. The top or cross piece T has thereon a rubber cushion 10 secured by bolts 11 the heads of which are embedded in the rubber and which receive nuts on the under side of the cross piece, so that one cushion can be removed and another substituted quite easily. The length of the legs 8 and 9 is suflicient to support the top in the elevated position referred to. The cushion'lO acts to prevent injury to the bows, and the construction is of such simplicity that the device may be very cheaply made and can be attached without alteration of ordinary existing structures. lVhen the carriage top is let down the rear bow rests upon the cushion, with the advantageous results above referred to.
I claim:
A support for carriage top, comprising a bar provided with a rigid depending arm at each end, said arms having holes in their lower ends to fit over a rail-bolt, and supporting the bar in raised position at a dis tance above the bolt, a cushion block resting 011 said bar, and an attaching bolt between the bar and the block, having its head embedded in the block.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
