aresecured' together by loir frame 27,' which the -end members 29.
the' frame 27 to the other and situated on opposite sides of the end members 2%). N ear the ends. of the end members 29 I have located two shafts 32 which are niovably carried in said members. The shafts 32 carry a plurality of gripper fingers 33, the ends of which extend over the edges of the longitudinal bars 31. Ifo each of the shafts l also attach lever arms 34 carrying in their ends rollers 35 which are designed to run over the surface of a stationarycain 3G attached to the side frame 1. The rollers 35are maintained lin contact wit-l1 the cam 36 through the action of springs 37 attached at one end' to the lever arms 34 and at tlie'other end to lVheii the rollers 35 are in contact with the cam 36 the gripper fingers 33v are raised so as to be in the position to receive a sheet of paper. When, however, the rollers 35 have passed beyond the cam 36 the fingers 33'are adapted to be seateilupon the longitudinal bars 31 so as to firmly grip the sheet of papel'. Theupper feed roller 2 is connected by a band 38 to the upper feed roller 4 so as to provide power forv iositively driving the feed rollers 4.
.The owcr rollers are connected by means of-arliain 39 and sprockets 40 and 4l with the shaft 30, so as to positively drive the ro tary frame 27. A
In order to' insure that the paper 'will be received-be'twe'cn'A the opening fingers 33 and againstthe longitudinal bar '3l coperating therewith, I provide an automatic inechan` ism for projecting the 'edge of the sheetfof paper into the teeth of' the grippei's. The same portion of the frames l which carries the stationary aiiiis 5,. also supports at each side of the. device an additional stationary arm 42, said arm 42 carrying therein a mov` able shaft 43, which shaft carries a series of fingers 4 4. Thesevfingers 44 are supported within brackets 45, in which they may be adjusted by the movement of screws 46. The bracketsA are also adjustable upon the shaft 43 by means of screws 47 passing through the bodies of the brackets. 'The finger 44 which is nearest to one end of the shaft 43 is projected into the path of more` ment of a pin 48 carried upon each end of one of the end members 2f). The remaining fingers 44 are set at a different angle, as shown in Fig. l, so that when the first nientioned fnger44 is moved by contact with the finger 4S, the remaining fingers 4.4 are caused to project the free edge of t r. paper into the jaws of the grippers.
The rollers 3 are especially constructed so las to automatically spread the traveling web of paper in a lateral direct-ion as it is fed between the rollers 2 and 3. There are two such rollers 3, one located at each end of the i shaft 24, each ofthe rollers comprising a double fianged wheel 49 Ahaving an outer flan`ge|50 of small diameter and an ipufer u j l flange al of' larger diameter. Between the flanges 50 andi 5l I place rubber rings 0fvactly the same manner but are located in reverse position with regard to each other, the flanges 5l of large diameter being adjacent to each other. The effect of this 'ar rangement is such that the tendency of the rings of rubber is to spread outwardly away from the middle ofthe roller 2, ree sulting in carrying the edge of the traveling web of paper adj aeent thereto, outwardly in the same direction away from the center of the roller 2. paper is maintained perfectly smooth.
In the operation of the device', a traveling web of paper is fed between the rollers 2 and3 and is thence guided between the feed rollers 4.. Between the rollers 2 and 3 and In this manner the web of ff the rollers- 4 the reciprocating knife is adapted at proper intervals, regulated by the position of the cams 23 and by its speed, to cut the web of paper into sheets. This is effected by the frame 5a being caused to travel at the same rate of speed, at the point.
ever the rollers 35 are in. contact with the' cam 3G the gippers will be in their open position. That `is to say, when a roller 35 strikes the lower" portion if the cam3(3, the gripper aiin 33 connected therewith is raised so as to release the sheet of paiiei','and when the saine roller reaches the upper portion of the cam 3G, the finger 33 attached thereto is `raised in a similar .manner to receive a new sheet of paper. is each set of grippers reaches the place where the free edgeof a sheet of paper to be grasped, the pin 4S adj acent'I thereto comes into contact with one of the fingers 44 so as to move the remainizo paper wouldnot be always fed intoptlire open Y l jaws-ofthegrippersf A `As the-web of paper ishfed intothc niachine', litisautomatically spread outl upon the-cylinder 2 through ythe action of the rollers 3,. This follows from the fact that because of the difference in the diameters from the center of the, roller 2. As a, result,
from the' center the tvvo edges ofthe traveli above in detail,
'one and capable o g web of paper lare moved With the rubber rings 52 away of the vroller `2, thereby 'spreading the paper and maintaining it smooth. f
yWhile I have described inyinvention ,I Wish itlwto loe-understood that I consider in, invention 4to be a broad man f changes and adaptations Without, departing from the spirit thereof.
