UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC.
WILLIAM W. DAY, 0F WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
COLLECTION-INDICATOR FOR MAIL-BOXES.
To all whom t m0/y concer/n.:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM WV. DAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVashington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collection-Indicators for Mail-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the subject of deposit and collection receptacles, and more particularly to postal mail boxes.
To this end the invention has in view a simple and practical construction of time card for mail boxes constituting a collection indicator for indicating the times of collections of the mail from the box by the carrier or other collector.
A special object of the invention is to provide a collection indicator or time card for mail boxes not only of extreme simplicity and durability, but also of such a construction as to permit the schedule to be conveniently and readily changed to suit the varying conditions that are met with in the postal service.
Vhile the invention is susceptible to einbodiment in various forms of construction without departing` from the spirit of the invention, or the scope thereof, a preferred and practical embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a collection indicator or time card for mail boxes shown in its applied position on the front wall of a mail box. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross sectional view thereof on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of a removablesign sheet and its transparent cover, the view also illustrating` certain of the indicating slides removed from their receiving slots. Fig. 4 is a plan view, partly in section, of the holding frame showing the detachable frame section separated from the frame body.
Like references designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
The improved collection indicator or time card essentially comprises a holding frame 1, and a sign sheet 2, the latter being de tachably inserted within and held by the frame. The said frame 1 is preferably of open rectangular form and consists of the opposite parallel side pieces 3-3 and the end pieces t and 5, the latter being detachable and constituting a detachable frame section. The said frame section 5 is intended to have a dowel oi equivalent connection G Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 6, 1909.
Patented Sept. 28, 1909.
serial No; 481,717.
l at one end With one of the side pieces 3 and a screw fastening or equivalent connection '7 with the corresponding end of the other side piece. provided with attachment lugs 8 to receive screws, bolts, or equivalent fasteners 9 to secure the frame upon the front wall 10 of a mail box, so that such wall 10 of the mail box forms the back of the holding frame.
The side pieces 3 of the holding frame are provided at their inner edges with longitu` dinal rabbets or guiding grooves 11 for the upper and lower longitudinal edges of the sign sheet 2 to permit the latter to be readily slid into or out of the frame through the open end or side when the detachable section 5 is removed.
The sign sheet 2 is made of any suitable material, preferably -of stout card-board, and is provided at opposite end edges with a transverse row of longitudinally disposed parallel receiving slots 12 adapted to re1nov ably and slidably receive therein individual indicating slides 13 bearing thereon time indications for hours and fractions thereof, according to the arrangement of the schedule for collection. These slides are readily interchangeable and removable so that the authorized collector or other official can rearrange the slides, and insert in any receiving slot a slide bearing any desired time indication.
The receiving slots 12 and the slides 13 have suitable registering faces, but irrespective of that detail, the slides are seated flush in their receiving slots and are covered and held in place upon their outer sides by a glass, Celluloid, or other transparent cover which is co-extensive with the sign sheet 3 and is removable and insertible with said sign sheet from and into the holding frame.
The opposite columns or rows of time indicating slides are headed by the usual ante and post meridian marks A. M. and 1). M., and the other space on the sign sheet is printed with the usual conventional notices.
In connection with the mounting of the individual slides 13, it will be observed that the same may be readily reversed in the receiving slots 12 therefor. This may be taken advantage of to reverse a slide to present a blank face if it is desired for any purpose to dispense with the time indication on the other face thereof. Also, other details of Preferably, the side pieces are opposite endedges with transverse rows of receiving slots, individual indicating slides removably and Slidably seated flush in said slot-s, and a single sheet of transparent Inaterial Wholly covering the front side of the sign sheet land confining both sets of slides. In testimony whereof I hereunto aiX my signature in the presence `of tivo witnesses. WILLIAM W. DAY. Vitnesses ELIZABETH M. REIGART, JOHN R. REIGART.
