Description

APPLICATION FILED JULY 6. 1908.
Patented Sept. 21,1909.
INVENTOR- al a/Lu 7 WITNESSES W M W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LORIN' W. YOUHG, 0F PITTSBURG, PENNSi'LVANIA.
GLOBE FOR INVEBTED INCANDESCENT GAS-BURNERS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 21 1909.
Application filed July 6, 1908. Serial No. 442,289.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORIN WV. YOUNG, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new the novel construction and combination of parts as will be'hereinafter more fully set forth.
I will now describe my invention so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains 'may understand and construct the same, referring to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved globe and Fig. 2 is an elevation of a modification of the globe.
In describing my invention, the reference numeral 2 indicates an ordinary standard inverted gas burner. Surrounding this burner 2 is a bowl supporting ring 3 which is suspended on chains 4 carried by the collar 5 loosely mounted on and carried by the shouldered portion 6 of the burner as pipe I. This ring may be provided with t e usual set-screws or other analogous globe-clamping means, and is adapted to receive a bowl 8. By means of the large top openin .9 of the bowl 8 I avoid the necessity of p acing an opening in the bottom portion ofthe bowl. The combustion and'the supply of air are not interferedwith and a greater supply of air is permitted than is the case with the ordinary globe. I alsoprevent any incandescent particles thrown off by the gas mantle from escaping and coming in contact. with easily inflannnable material. Owing to the flexible support afforded by the chains 4, any movement of the bowl will not be liable to jar and injure the mantle.
By my improvement I am enabled to attach to an inverted gas burner a globe having a large,- approximately flat surface, which consequently gives a greater diffusion of light, permits perfect combustion and is more susceptible to artistic ornamentation than the small substantially spherical globes commonly used heretofore in connection with inverted burners.
The advantages of my invention will be found to reside in the light-gh'ing proper ties, the artistic possibilities, in simplicity of construction, and cheapness of mamlfacture. and in the fact that the light deflector is suspended independently of the lamp. v
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to spcure by Letters Patent is An incandescent gas burner comprising a mantle rigidly mounted u on the gas conductor, and a globe for sand burner flexibly supported from the as conductor and independent of the mant e support whereby said conductor and mantle aresubstantially relieved from aquivering action.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
