LEWIS C. LAMBERT, OF SOMERSET, PENNSYLVANIA.
FARMERS AND HARVESTERS COMBINATIONW HIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 21, 1909.
Application filed January 18, 1909. Serial No. 472,959.
Be it known that I, LEWIS C. LAMBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerset, in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farmers and Harvesters Combination-\Vhips, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is an improved construction of device intended for use by harvesters to serve as a combination whip for driving the horses, and also for picking, pulling or pushing out of the way of the operator of the mowing machine, the hay rack or reaper, any limbs, sheaves, weeds or the like that may happen to be in the path, without the necessity of the operator getting off the machine and thereby saving consideraliile time and labor as well as the danger to which the operator exposed when stepping in frcnt of the cutter bar.
lVith these and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts which I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved device; Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the upper or lash end of the whip; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section of the lash end of the whip; and, Fig. 5 is an enlarged elevation of the handle end thereof.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and inclicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the body portion 1 is formed of a single piece of sheet metal such as steel or other material, crimped intermediate of its ends to form a pair of two-ply clip members 2 which together form a socket to receive the tip or lash 3 of the whip, the said tip being of any desired material, construction or design, and being secured to the body portion by rivets or similar fastening devices.
The spaced side members 4: of the body portion receive between. their ends the handle portion 5 which may be formed of wood, or any other desired material riveted or otherwise secured to the body portion as I'llOWD. The handle portion 5 extends some distance up into the body portion 1, and is preferably formed with a longitudinal groove between which and the adjoining face of one of the side members -il and the body portion, an actuating rod 7 works. This rod may be formed of wire, or any other material may be used, and it is preferably forked at its upper end as indicated at 8, the extremities being connected to the picker arms 9. In their retracted position, the picker arms 9 lie within the margins of the side members -ft of the body portion 1, the inner end of the handle portion 5 being preferably tapered, as indicated at 12, to form with said body portion, recesses for the accommodation of the pickerarms. A latch 13 is pivotally mounted upon the handle 5 and is connected at one end to the actuating rod 7, the said latch being kept open by a compression spring 14, and being provided with a fingerpiece 15 which is designed for engagement with a detent 16, so that the pickers 9 may be held rigidly in a spread-out condition or folded to lie within the margins of the handle with the latch in different positions in an evident manner. Preferably the tip 8 is formed at its outer end with an opening 3 in which a raw-hide or the like may be tied. A plate 17, preferably of aluminium, is secured to the handle portion 5 by screws or similar fastening devices, so as to cover the major portion of the actuating rod. Below this plate, the said rod may be guided by any desired number of eyes or staples 18.
In the practical use of my improved farmers and harvesters combination whip, the picker arms 9 are swung into retracted position when the device is used for its primary function of a goad or lash. Whenever it is necessary to pick out of the road any weeds, limbs of trees, or the like that may happen to be in the path, it is only necessary for the driver to swing the latch 13 in a direction to move the picker arms 9 outwardly, whereupon either one of said arms may be used in an obvious manner to drag or throw the obstructions out of the way without the necessity of the driver descending from his seat.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A whip, comprising a body portion formed with spaced side members, picker arms pivotally connected thereto, a handle portion connected to the body portion, and an actuating rod operatively connected to said picker arms and movably connected to the body portion.
2. A whip comprising a body portion formed with spaced side members, picker arms pivotally mounted in said. body portion to swing laterally therefrom, a handle connected to one end of said body portion, a lash connected to the opposite end of said body portion, and an actuating rod connected at one end to said picker arms, the other end of said actuating rod extending outwardly from the body portion and extending along the handle.
3. A whip comprising a body portion, picker arms pivotally connected to said body portion, a handle connected to one end of the body portion, a lash connected to the opposite end of the body portion, and an actuating rod connected to said arms, the body portion being formed with side recesses designed to receive the picker arms in the closed position thereof.
4. A whip, comprising a body portion formed with spaced side members, picker arms pivotally mounted between said side members near one end thereof, a lash connected to the body portion at such end beyond the picker arms, a handle secured be tween the side members'near the opposite ends thereof and formed with a tapered upper extremity forming with said side members side recesses and an actuating rod connecting said arms.
5. A whip, comprising a body portion, picker arms pivotally connected to the body portion, a handle portion mounted in the body portion and formed in one face with a longitudinal groove, an actuating rod connected to the picker arms and mounted to move in said groove, and a lash connected to one end of the body portion.
6. A whip, comprising a body portion constructed of a single strip doubled upon itself intermediate of its ends to form clip members, a lash connected between said clip members, and a handle connected to the body portion.
7. A whip, comprising a body portion, a handle connected thereto, pickers pivotally mounted in the body portion, an actuating rod operatively connected to said pickers, a finger latch pivotally mounted on the handle and connected to the actuating rod, the latch being spring-pressed in one direction, and a detent secured to the handle and arranged for engagement with the latch.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
