TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 21, 1909.
Application filed September 2, 1908. Serial No. 451,397.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, VVHon'roN C. L. IRE- LAND and ADAM WV. \VERIusnR, citizens of the United States, residing at Norristown, in the county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to toys, and has for its object to provide a toy which will be amusing and interesting, and which will at the same time aiford the player healthful exercise.
A further object of the invention is to provide a toy of this kind which is simple in construction so that it may be cheaply produced.
The invention consists of an aerial projectile, means for operating the same, and a net or receptacle for catching the projectile in its descent.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is an elevation of the toy, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 22 of Fig. 4. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the parts in another position. Fig. 4: is a plan view.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, 5 denotes a handle from the outer end of which project in opposite directions and at substantially right angles, arms 6 and 7, respectively. The arm 6 carries at its outer end a cup 8 in which a plunger 9 works. In the bottom of the cup is an opening from which a tube 10 depends. The plunger is fitted with a stem 11 which extends through the tube, and said stem is provided with a knob 12 which is adapted to abut against the outer end of the tube to limit the forward movement of the plunger. Around the stem is coiled a spring 13 which is confined between the. plunger and a shoulder 14 on the inside of the tube adjacent to the outer end thereof.
The purpose of the spring-pressed plunger herein described is to project a ball 15 from the cup 8. In use, the said ball is placed in the cup on top of the plunger and the latter is retracted by grasping the knob 12 and pulling the same outwardly from the tube. This movement of the plunger compresses the spring 13, and upon releasing the knob the spring expands and shoots the plunger upwardly, whereby the ball is projected from the cup. The arm 7 carries at its outer end a net or other suitable receptacle 16 to catch the ball as it descends after having been projected from the cup as stated.
The toy herein describedlis amusing and interesting, and the movement of the limbs and body of the player in following the trajectory of the ball so as to catch it in the net, is healthful exercise.
A game may also be played with the toy by a number of players formed into two sides, and the players of one side catching in their nets the balls projected by the players of the other side.
What is claimed, is
1. A toy comprising a handle having arms extending therefrom in opposite directions, receptacles having parallel axes carried by said arms, and means for projecting an ob ject from one of said receptacles.
2. A toy comprising a handle having arms extending therefrom in opposite directions, receptacles carried by said arms, and a spring-pressed plunger working in one of said receptacles for projecting an object therefrom.
3. A toy comprising a handle having arms extending therefrom in opposite directions, receptacles having their axes parallel to the handle carried on said arms and a plunger working in one of said receptacles for projecting an object therefrom.
In testimony whereof, we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
