specification of Letters Patent. Paigeggtgfi S9593 1141., 1,
Original application filed November 1, 1906, Serial No. 341,695. Divided and this application filed March i 29, 1909., Serial No. 438,634-1.
To all whom it may concern:
"Be it known that DANIEL B. LUTEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State olf Indiana,'hcve invented certain new and useful Improvements in Walls, of which the following -is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improvedv recess of constructing walls and copingso concrete so that irregularities will not be noticeable; and to provide such improvements in details and methods of construction as shall hereinafter be pointed out.
This application is a division of an apication filed by me Noni, 1906, Serial 0. 341,605. v
The accompanying drawing illustrates my invention, the figure being a transverse ver-I tical section of a well with projecting coping, or ledge. I v
In building a concrete wall with a prO ectingledge or coping, as for instance the coping'of a spandrel wall for a bridge, it' is a very diificult matter to maintain the-forms in true lines, as" the wet concrete tends to warp and bill e the-forms. As a consequence, the .wal is wavy and irregular but, if
the surface expo'sedfbe very largeth'ese Wavy irregularities are not particularly apparent to the eye ifnosupposedly straight line is submitted forjins'pection; but where there are ledges or copings for ornamentation and these have beenbuilt continuously with the wall, the lines of the led es or copings will present the same-wavy e ges. If, however, the wall 75 is built. to the underside of the coping 76 and allowed to set or harden so that it will retain its form and hold the nest form for the coping securely, the facing boards, or generally thefacing heard 7 7 for the coping, may then be lined up careiullfy and easily maintained, and it will then be almost impossible to detect any irregularities in the fece of the wall 75. or in the moldings 0r copings '76. V
the wall beneath.
ledge and permitting it to set, after which the forms for the ledge are alined and, while held in elinement by the already hardened wall, the concrete for the ledge is deposited, with its exposed edge true and not in elinement with the wavy I claim as my invention; 1. That improvement in the art of building swell of hardening plastic comprising erecting the forms building the wall to a line beneath a proposed ro'ectin co in allowing the wall to htii'de n, en d siibs quently alining the .f'ormsffor the coping and completing the coping.
2. That improvement in the art of building a well of hardening plastic comprising alining the coping forms after building substantially to the coping end after setting, and completing the coping in the alined forms.
3.. i That irnfprovement in the art of build ing a well 0 hardening plastic com rising erecting the whll with an irreguler ace below the coping, and, after settin adding the coping with true alinement of the projecting cop ngface.
4.. That improvement in the 'process of building a wall of hardening plastic surmounted by a projecting coping, comprising completing the well substantially .to the coping, and after hardening-correcting the elinement ofthe co ing forms and subsequently completing t e coping.
In witness'whereot, I, have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this fifteenth day of March, A. D, one thousand nine hundred and nine.
