Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, J OSEPH W. Vnrr and JUNIUS N. Hrccnvs, citizens of the United States, residing at Wapakoneta, in the county of Auglaize and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in WVhip-Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in whip sockets the object being to provide a spring locking member in connection with the socket so that the whip can be securely locked within the socket after being placed therein thereby it will be impossible to remove the same without unlocking the member.
Another object of our invention is to provide a locking member which will engage the butt end of a whip without injuring the A still further object is to provide a socket which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction and one in which the locking member is so mounted that it will be impossible for the member to be operated without a key.
VVit-h these various objects in view, our invention consists in the novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter fully described.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification :Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved whip socket partly broken away to show the locking member. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same, and Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 8-3 of Fig. 2' Fig. A is a detail view of a portion of the whip socket with the cover removed showing the position of the keyhole and plate.
In the drawings A indicates the whip socket proper which spaced splits formed'in one side which are bent outwardly to form guide members B in which is mounted a spring locking member C the lower end of which extends through the casing and is provided with a curved lower end G which is slightly concaved so that it will fit snugly around the butt end of a whip D when arranged therein. A rack bar E is secured on the outer face of the spring member C and extending outwardly from the casing A is a pin A over which is adapted to fit a key which engages the rack strap as when this arrangement is formed of a cylindrical casing of some suitable metal having portion and forces the spring member upwardly and downwardly so as to lock or unlock the whip. A substantially semi-circular plate F is secured around the casing A over the spring locking member and is provided with a key hole F over the pin A through which the key is adapted to be inserted for operating the locking member. The casing is provided with a covering G of leather or other suitable material which is held thereon by a bottom cap G and a top ring G which is provided with a rubber washer for preventing the whip from rattling when placed therein, the casing being rovided with an opening registering with the key hole.
The socket is supported on a dash board H by metal straps I carried by buckles I which are secured to the dash board by screws as clearly shown but it is of course understood that it canbe supported by any of the well-known supporting means now in use.
It will be seen that when the spring locking member is in its raised position a whip can be readily placed in the socket and by turning the key the spring member will be forced downwardly into engagement with the whip and is held in this position by frictional contact with the lower guide the whip is pulled on the lower end of the spring member gives which binds it against the guide strap so that it is impossible to remove the whip without unlocking the same. It will be seen that by a whip can be quickly locked within the socket so as to prevent it from being stolen.
From the foregoing description, itwill be seen that we'have provided a very novel V locking member in connection with a whip socket which will securely lock the whip therein without injuring the same in any way.
What we claim is 1. The combination with a whip socket, having a plate secured thereto and spaced therefrom, of a spring member slidably mounted under said plate extending into said socket through a split formed therein, a rack secured to said spring member, said plate being provided with a keyhole through which a key is adapted to be inserted for engaging said rack for operating said spring member.
