HAT AND COAT HOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,258, dated December 15, 1896.. Application filed April 20, 1896. Serial No. 588,272. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES P. BRAND, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat and Coat I-Iooks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hat and coat hooks, and has for its object the provision of new and novel means whereby the coat and hat may be securely locked on the hook and preventing any one but the owner from removing the same.

A further object of the invention is to construct a coat and hat hook of the above-described class that will be extremely simple in its construction, strong, durable, effectual in its operation, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

tVith the above and other objects in view the invention finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hat and coat hool Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. The operation of my improved hat and coat hook will be readily apparent from the views of the same which I have shown in the drawings.

IV e will assumethat all parts have been secured in their respective positions and the rack has been fastened to the wall or other place it is desired to fasten the same. When it is desired to lock both the coat and hat on the rack, the strap of the coat can be placed over the hook p and the hat is placed on the same. The cap 0 is then pulled downon the hat, which will force the toothed rack downward, compressing the spring, and when the cap fits tightly on the hat the key is turned in the lock, which will force the locking-bar out into engagement with the teeth It and re tain the cap in this position. The user can carry the key in his pocket and prevent the change of hats or coats, as frequently happens in restaurants, hotels, and the like.

IVhen only the coat is to be locked, the same can be hung on the hook by the collar, and when the cap is forced down the front part and the flange q will engage the same and hold it firmly, the operation of the locking being the same as heretofore described, and the hat can-be locked in the same manner when it is used as a hat-rack alone.

It will be observed that the device will. be particularly useful, as before stated, in hotels and the like, and it will also be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
