To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A-LoNzo E. R i'ioanns, a citizen of the United States, and resident of llopedale, county of Worcester, State of hilassachusetts, hare invented an Improvei'nent in Automatic Filling- Replenishing hiooms, of which the folloi'ving description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is aspecification, like characters on the drmvings representing like parts;
This invention relates more particularly to looms wherein the working shuttle is pro vid'cd automatically with a fresh supply of filling wlien-necessary, theshuttle being provided'with a threading device which'a'ssmnes control of and effects in an automatic manner the threading ofthe shuttle when such fresh supply of filling is inserted therein. 7 My invention has for its object the prodiict'ion of novel means to assist the threading device assuming control of the filling thread at the time of filling replenislnnent, and I have also provided means to prevent the filling from being thrown forward to ward the threaddelivering end of the shuttle when the shuttle is boxed. The novel means to be hereinafter described also-serves to keep the thread controlling or governing device on the shuttle clear of lint or dust, and thereby to obviate any tendency of such device or the delivery-eye to become choked or filled;
The various novel features of my invention will be fully described in the subjoined specification and particularly pointed out in the following claims.
Figure l is a top plan View of a portion of the replenishing side of a loom, showing a part of the lay and its shuttle-box, an automatically threading shuttle in the box, and a suilicient portion of the replenishing mechanism with one embodiment of my present invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the lay and a portion of its shuttle-box, showing the nozzle for delivering the air-blast, to be referred to.
Referring to the drawing, the lay A having a shuttle-b0 B thereon at one end, the shuttle S containing a filling-carrier or bobbin D and provided with a threading device T, Fig. 1, (such for instance as shown in United States Patent No. 769,914, granted September 13, 190st to Northrop,) to assume control of the fresh filling thread 6, see dotted lines, Fig. l, and direct it automatically to the usual side delivery-eye of the shuttle; and the filling-feeder or hopper F mounted at the replenishing side ofthe loom, to-cont-ain a supply of filling carriers 19*, the transferrer' f and filling-end holder Z) at the as-tlie'lay' reaches front center, and then the fresh filling thread 2? is held by the endliold'er a as the lay goes back and the shuttle is picked, thethreadbe-ing'slack enough to obviatebreakage at the time-of transfer. On the first pick ofthe shuttle from the box 13 the threading device T is arranged to assume control of the fresh filling and to effect a part of the threading operation, which is usually completed onthe second or return pick. Now in order toassist the threading device on the shuttle to assume control. of the fresh fillingthread I have, in the present embodiment of'my invention, located an air nozzle 2 above the path of the shuttle-box Band with its mouth 3 so positioned that it will be above and near the threadingdevice T at the time of transfer. This nozzle is also arranged parallel to the length of the shuttle, as shown in Fig. 1-, and it is connected with and supported by a suitable sta tionary supply pipe at. Said pipe elis connected with any suitable source" of air under pressure, as for instance a fan or blower M, Fig. l, the pipe being connected with the outlet or discharge m.
By the structure described a blast of air will" be directed upon the shuttle close to the threading device, each time the shuttle enters the box B and the lay beats up, the air blast being directed downward upon the shuttle and in the direction of its length toward the inner end thereof.
\Vhen fresh filling is inserted in the shuttle the air blast acts to force the filling thread 25 toward and downward into the threading device T, so that should there be any twisting or kinking of the thread, or any tendency to move away from its proper position, such action will be prevented by the air blast. and the thread will be brought into the control of the threading device. The blast also serves to clear the shuttle of lint or fluff around the threading device and the delivery-eye, and to assist in the withdrawal of the old filling-end at the time of replenishment.
I have also provided a second nozzle 5, connected with and supported by the supply pipe f, and substantially in parallelism with the nozzle 2, but behind it, as clearly shown in Fig. l, the location of the second nozzle being such that its blast will be directed downward and longitudinally upon the shut tle at the time it reaches the box B on the forward beat of the lay, before the latter reaches front center. When the shuttle is stopped on its flight to the right, or to the replenishing side of the loom, there is sometimes a tendency for the filling to be thrown ahead toward the outer or delivery end of the shuttle and onto the threading device.
While the latter is often designed to prevent any evil effect from such a loop it is objectionable and the air blast delivered from the nozzle 5 checks the tendency of the loop to be thrown out, and obviates any possibility of its engagement with the threading device. Such second nozzle also acts to keep the thread controlling portions of the shuttle clean and clear of accumulations of lint or dust.
So far as my invention is concerned the means for directing the air blast may be supported in any suitable manner, and connected with any desired or suitable apparatus for furnishing air under pressure.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination, in a loom provided with mechanism to replenish automatically the filling in the working shuttle, and a shuttle having a device to assume control of the fresh filling thread, of pneumatic means to act upon the filling at the time of replenishment and assist the device on the shuttle to assume control of such filling.
2. In a loom, a shuttle adapted to contain filling and provided with a threading device to assume control automatically of the filling thread, mechanism to provide the shuttle with a fresh supply of filling, and means to direct a blast of air upon the threading device when the shuttle is at the replenishing side of the loom, to assist in directing the fresh filling thread into the control of the threading device at the time of replenishment.
8. In a loom, a lay provided with a shuttle-box, a shuttle having a threading device to assume control automatically of the filling thread when a fresh supply of filling is inserted in the shuttle, mechanism to provide the shuttle with a fresh supply of filling, and a stationary nozzle adapted to be connected with a source of air under pressure and located above the path of movement of the shuttle-box, to direct a blast of air upon the shuttle at the time of replenishment, and assist the threading device to assume control of the fresh filling thread.
i. In a loom, a lay provided with a shuttle-box, an automatically-threading shuttle, and means to direct a blast of air downward and longitudinally of the shuttle toward its inner end when the shuttle is in said shuttle-box, to prevent the filling thread from being thrown forward toward the outer end of the shuttle.
5. In a loom, a lay provided with a shuttlebox, an automatically-threading shuttle, and means to direct a blast of air downward and longitudinally of the shuttle toward its inner end when the shuttle is in said shuttle-box, to prevent the filling thread from being thrown forward toward the outer end of the shuttle, combined with means to insert a fresh supply of filling in the shuttle, and means to direct a blast of air upon the thread-delivering portion of the shuttle at the time of filling replenishment, to assist in the automatic threading of the shuttle.
6. In a loom, a shuttle provided with means to control and govern the delivery of the filling thread therefrom, combined with means to direct a blast of air upon said thread controlling means as the shuttle reaches the end of its flight on alternate picks.
