Description
UNITE I PETER GOEMAERE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
LAWN- SPRINKLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 14:, 1909.
Application filed January 9, 1909. Serial No. 471,385.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER Gommnrn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn- Sprinklers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In watering lawns or gardens with hose sprinklers of the usual type, it is ditlicult to adjust the spray to cover a narrow strip, such as the space between the sidewalk and curb, without wetting the adjoining parts, often to the discomfort of passers by.
This invention relates to a sprinkler attachment for a garden or lawn hose especially adapted for covering'narrow strips of ground without over-running onto the neighboring ground and also so disposed that the operator can move it from place to place without having to shut the water off to avoid getting wet.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in cross-section looking at one end of a lawn sprinkler embodying features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a view in longitudinal sec tion of the sprinkler. Fig. 3 is a view show ing the application of the sprinkler to a narrow strip between a sidewalk and a curb.
Referring to the drawings, a short length of pipe 1 is supported in a horizontal position on a low standard, preferably a sheet metal plate 2 bent between its side margins 3 which are recurved to form feet, the sheet being reversely curved at its point of greatest fiexure to form a groove 4 conforming to the pipe which is secured therein by suitable means, as bolts 5 or the like. The outer end of the tube is closed by-a cap 6 and the other end is slightly enlarged and interiorly screwthreaded or otherwise fitted for coupling a hose 7 thereto. A pair of transverse parallel slots 8 are cut, one near each end, in planes perpendicular to the pipe axis, and each about half way around the pipe. In the most efficient form of construction, the inner edges 9 of the slots are beveled, and the outer edges 10 are perpendicular. Between the slots, the upper part of the wall of the pipe has a series of et perforations 11.
In operation, the sprinkler is placed on a strip of lawn to be watered with the slots substantially parallel to the sides thereof. ater forced through the pipe issues from the slots in fan-shaped sheets which confine or check any divergent drops from the intermediate perforations, so that the water is confined to the lawn and does not spray over on the adjoining ground. The operator may approach the sprinkler from either end and pick up or shift the device when it is operating without drenching himself.
hat I claim as my invention is 1. A lawn sprinkler comprising a pipe closed at one end and fitted for a hose connection at the other, the pipe having a perforated area between its ends defined by a pair of peripheral slots, and means for supporting the pipe with the perforated portion uppermost.
2. A lawn sprinkler comprising a pipe closed at one end and fitted for a hose connection at the other, the pipe having a perforated area between its ends bounded by a pair of peripheral slots lying in planes substantially at right angles to the pipe axis, and means for supporting the pipe with the perforated portion uppermost.
3. A lawn sprinkler comprising a pipe closed at one end and fitted for a hose connection at the other, the pipe having a perforated area between its ends defined by a pair of peripheral slots, and a supporting plate bent between its ends throughout its length and secured at its crown against the pipe.
a. A lawn sprinkler comprising a pipe closed at one end and fitted for hose connections at the other, the pipe having a pair of peripheral slots, one near each end, in planes at substantially right angles to the pipe axis and a series of perforations in the wall between the slots, and means for supporting the pipe with the perforated por tion uppermost.
A lawn sprinkler comprising a pipe closed at one end and fitted for hose connection at the other, the pipe having a pair of peripheral slots, one near each end, whose outer edges lie in planes at substantially right angles to the pipe axis and whose inner edges are beveled and a series of perforations in the wall between the slots, and means for supporting the pipe with the perforated portion uppermost.
6. A lawn sprinkler comprising a pipe closed at one end and fitted for hose connections at the other, the pipe having a pair of peripheralslots, one near each end, whose outer edges lie in planes at substantially right angles to the pipe axis and whose inner edges are beveled, and a series of perforations in the wall between the slots, and a supporting plate bent between its sides throughout its length and secured at its crown against the pipe.
7. A lawn sprinkler comprising a pipe closed at one end and fitted for a hose connection at the other, the pipe having a perforated area between its ends defined by a pair of peripheral slots, a plate bent upwardly between its side margins and re curved mediate the margins to correspond to the pipe against which it is secured, the
margins being recurved to form feet.
8. A. lawn sprinkler comprislng a pipe closed at one end and fitted for hose 5011-,
nection at the other, the pipe having a pair of peripheral slots, one near each end, whose outer edges lie in planes at substantially right angles to the pipe axis and whose inner edges are beveled and a series of perforations in the wall between, the slots, and a plate bent upwardly between its side margins and recurved mediate the margins to correspond to the pipe against which it is sea cured, the margins being recurved to form feet.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
