UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ClARL F. EDLUND, OF BROCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
MILK-BOTTLE TOP.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL F. EDLUNI), a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in ilk-Bottle Tops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to securing devices for milk bottle tops and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is comparatively simple in construction and which will effectively retain the stopper upon the mouth of the milk bottle.
\Vith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description progresses the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing there has been illustrated a simple and preferred em bodiment of the invention and in which,
Figure l is a side elevation of a milk bottle top provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig 3 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a central vertical section taken upon the line 44 of Fig 3. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the same.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 designates a milk bottle of the ordinary construction. This bottle 1 has its upper extremity or mouth provided with the usual annular bead or enlargement 2 and adapted to be positioned beneath this bead or enlargement 2 is a split ring 3. The ring 3 is preferably constructed of wire of a suitable gage and has its front portion bent upon itself to provide a pair of spaced eyes 4, while the rearward or free ends of the ring are also bent upon themselves to provide a pair of spaced eyes 5. These eyes 5 are adapted for the reception of ofiset portions 6 provided upon the free ends of the substantially V-shaped securing finger 7. This securing finger is also constructed of a single strand of wire and has'its forward portion U-shaped as at 8 to provide a lip, the purpose of which will hereinafter be described. The rear or spread portion of the securing finger has its arms connected together through the medium of a suitable bail 9, thus effectively retaining the offset portion 6 of the said fingerinto engagement Specification of Letters Patent.

with the eyes 5 of the ring 3. The finger 7 has itstop portion substantially horizontal when in applied position and has its rear ends bent downwardly so-that the said finger may project'a suitable distance above the top or horizontal position contacted by the closure 10 of the bottle.
The eyes 4 provided upon the ring 3 are each adapted for the reception of links 10. These links have their upper portions offset to engage the eyes 4 and their lower portions provided with eyes 11.
The numeral 12 designates the locking bail of the device. This bail 12 is also preferably constructed of a single strand of wire and comprises a pair of spaced arms having their extremities bent or offset as at 13 and adapted to engage with the eyes 11 of the links 10. Adapted to be positioned between the vertical arms of the locking bail l2 and the eyes 11 of the links, 10, and upon the OE- set or bent portions 13 of the locking bail 12, is a lever 14. This lever 14 is also constructed preferably of a single strand of wire, being of a substantially V-shaped formation and having its arms provided with eyes, whereby the same is positioned upon the said ofi'sets 13.
In securing-the closure 10" upon the mouth of the bottle 1 the securing finger 7 is first swung over the closure, the locking lever 14 is bent upwardly so as to allow the bail 12 to engage the lip 8 of the securing finger. The locking lever 14 is then bent downwardly against the neck of the bottle 1, thus forcing the rotation of the links 10 upon their pivots or eyes 4 and effectively sustaining the closure 10 in locked position upon the bottle. WVhen it is desired to remove the closure from the bottle it is merely necessary to swing the lever 14 upwardly so as to release the links 10 and thus allow the removal of the locking bail 12 from the lip 8 of the securing finger 7, when the said securing ringer may be rotated rearwardly upon its pivotal connection with the eyes 5 of the ring 3, thus allowing the removal of the said closure 10.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be noted that I have provided an extremely simple and thoroughly effective device for sustaining the closure upon the bottle neck, one which may be rigidly and easily applied to bottles of various designs, having their mouths provided with a bead or enlargement and one which may be readily removed from the said bottle when desired.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
In combination with a vessel having its mouth provided with an external bead, a split ring positioned beneath the bead, said ring having its ends bent upon themselves to provide a pair of spaced eyes and havingits body also bent to provide spaced eyes diametrically opposite the eyes provided for the ends, a securing member comprising a V-shaped wire having its apex bent upwardly and its arms bent downwardly and o'ltset to engage with the eyes provided upon the ends of the split ring, a bail upon the arms of the securing member adapted to force the latter tightly into engagement with the eyes of the split ring, a locking lever comprising a single strand of wire having its ends ofiset to engage the eyes upon the body of the ring, and a locking bail pivotally connected with the lever and adapted to engage with the upturned portion of the securing member.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
