TOILET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. BURKHARDT, citizen of the United States, residing at Burlingame, in the county of San l/lateo and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toilets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to toilets. lts object is to provide a disappearing toilet which can be placed in any room and moved into and out of a cabinet, being only exposed when desired for use; which will have no flush tanks, floats or ordinary valve arrangements, and which will be simple in construction, sanitary, and not likely to get out of order.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation in partial section of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail of a valve mechanism for the flushing arrangement.
A represents a bowl of suitable construction having a suitably packed ball-bearing sleeve joint 2 suitably mounted to turn on the waste pipe 3 so that the bowl may be swung from side to side and moved into or out of a suitable cabinet t, which latter may be built into the wall of the building or room.
5 is a water supply pipe connecting with the main, or any other suitable source of supply, and through which the water is admitted into the bowl for flushing purposes. As here shown, the pipe 5 enters a vertically arranged cylinder 6 which has a horizontal cylindrical extension 7, in which extension a suitably packed piston 8 is adapted to operate.. A valve 9 seats in the upper end of the cylinder 6, and the stem 10 of this valve carries a roller 11 adapted to ride on the rod 12 of piston 8. This piston-rod 12 has a cam or wedge 13 suitably positioned to engage the roller 11 so that when the rod 12 is pulled in one direction it will lift valve 9 and allow the water to How from pipe 5 into the valve casing 6; the valve 9 being closed automatically in a manner shortly to be described. valve casing opening into a short pipe 17 disposed in axial line with the pivoted sleeve 2 of the bowl. This pipe 17 forms a pivot for the flushing pipe 18 which connects with the top of the bowl, so that when valves 9 and 15 are open, and the bowl swung out into the room into operative position, the water can pass directly down through the valve casing 6 and through pipes 17 and 18 into the bowl, and thence into the wastepipe. The valve 15is mounted loose on the stem 10 so as to be movable independent of valve 9. The function of the valve 15 is that of a regulator to govern the flow of the water into the bowl, and its adjustment is eected' by suitable means, as the ratchet 19 operated by a conveniently arranged thumb-screw 20. rfhe rear end of the casing extension 7 is closed, and the piston 8 has a small port 21 connecting the space on the opposite sides of the piston, through which the fluid may slowly circulate. A spring 22 tends normally to press the piston 8 outward from the valve stem 10 so as to allow the valve 9 to close. A suitable vent-pipe 23 is connected with the top of the wastepipe 3 and leads outside the building, so as to remove any noxious gases that might be generated.
Any appropriate means may be employed to effect the oscillation of the toilet into and out of the casing. As here shown, a wire cable 24 has its ends connected to a drum 25 on the sleeve 2, and is directed around suitable direction pulleys 26-27 and a portion of the cable may carry a suitable hand-hold 28 conveniently `disposed so that by grasping this hand-hold and pulling in one direction the toilet will be swung outward from the cabinet, and when pulled in the opposite direction the bowl will be swung inward into inoperative position.
It is understood that the bowl and the stack-pipe are only in communication through the passageway 29 when the bowl is swung outward int-o operative position. Whenever it is swung inward into the cabinet, this opening 29 is closed, valve-fashion, by the turning sleeve 2 so that the gases from the stack-pipe cannot pass into the room.
In operation, the door of the cabinet is opened and the bowl swung outward into the position shown in Fig. 1, or in dotted line position, Fig. 2. Assuming that the thumb-screw 20 and ratchet 19 have been turned and set permanently so as to give the desired outlet around valve l5, the' operator simply pulls outward on the handle 30 which is attached to the piston-i'od 12; This causes the cam 13 to lift up on roller l1, opening valve 9. The water can then pass in from pipe 5 around valve 9, through the casing,'
and out around valve l5 and through the pipes 17-18 into the bowl; thence to the sewer.l Releasing the hold on the handle 30 allows the spring 22 to act, and the period of flushingl will depend on the time that it takes this spring' to push the piston 8 backward against the slow flow of the fluidV through port 2l from the space behind piston 8; it being` understood that the combined pressure exerted on piston 8 by the water pressure in the casing and the spring 22, is in excess of the pressure at the outlet into pipe 17. As soon as the caml rides out from underneath the roller 1l the valve 9 is seated by the pressure inpipe 5, and the flushingl operation ceases.
Havingl thus described my invention, what for the outlet, said inlet valve having a stem on which the outlet valve is independently movable, means for moving said outlet valve, and means for opening the inlet valve, said last-named means including a piston operate ing` -in an extension to said valve casing, and one side of the said piston exposed to the water pressure in the'valve casing, a rod for said piston, and means whereby on the reciprocation of said rod in one direction the inlet valve Vis opened.

The combination of a bowl, aV valve casing, said valve casing having an inlet and an outlet, a valve seating` on the inlet, a valve for the outlet, said inlet valve having a stem on which the outlet valve is independently movable, means for moving said outlet valve, means for opening the inlet valve, said lastnamed means including a piston operating iii an extension to said valve casing, and one side of the said piston exposed to the water pressure in the valve casing, a rod for said piston and means whereby on the reciproca- ,tion of said rod in one direction the inlet valve is opened, and means for automatically reciprocating said pistonv rod in the opposite direction.
