Description

EG TTTTTT R. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA 8 By m r ATTORNEYS EVELYN' LEISS, OF BRONXVILLE, NEW YORK.4 l
EGG-TESTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 7, 1999.
Application filed August 28, 198. Serial No. 450,610.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVELYN LEIss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bronxville, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Egg-Tester, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention belongs to that class of eggV testers which consists of a box having openings in the top in which eggs are adapted to be seated, in combination with a mirror in the box under the openings, for reflecting such light as passes through the eggs, the same being observable through a sight-opening located at a convenient point above the mirror.
The invention may be dened as consisting of a box having a top, sides and ends made of a single piece of sheet metal folded upon itself at the top and bottom edges of the sides to form flanges, said top having openings in which the eggs may be seated, and provided with a sight opening adjacent to one end thereof, a bottom of sheet metal folded upon itself at the edges to provide flanges and ways, with the flanges of the bottom slidable within the bottom flanges of the sides, a reflector slidable within the ways of the bottom, and a cover slidable on the top flanges of the sides for` covering certain of said openings..
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of refererence indicate corresponding partsin all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of my im-v proved egg tester when wholly assembled, the cover being shown in a position as when a single egg is to be tested; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central vertical section of the tester Vdownwardly and folding the metal upon and bottom longitudinalitself at the top edges of the sides, to respectively form flanges 6 and ways 7 After the sides have been bent down to positions at right-angles to the top, the vertical edges of the ends are bent inwardly to engage over them as indicated at 5a, holding the same in proper relative position. The bottom of the box is constructed of a separate piece of sheet metal which is folded upon itself at the opposite side edges to form flanges 8 and ways 9, the flanges being such as to slidably lit in the ways 7, and the ways l9 slidably receiving a mirror or other reflector 10, thus permitting the bottom of the box to be removed for cleansing and other purposes, andthe mirror to be slid from the bottom and renewed when broken or otherwise injured. To facilitate the removal of the bottom, the metal at one end thereof is turned upwardly to form a lip l1, the same operating as a 'stop for limiting the insertion of the mirror `and also for limiting the insertion of the bottoni.
Slidable over the top of the box is an imperforate cover l2 which is bent over at opposite side edges to form ways 13 which engage the flanges 6. This cover is of such length as to cover all but one of a number of openings 14C formed in the top of the box, and in which the eggs are adapted to be seated. In this way the light may be excluded from such of the openings 14 as are not in use, and a single egg can thus be effectively tested. The light passing through the egg will be reflected by the mirror 10, and is observable through an opening l5 formed at one end of the box adjacent to the top. If the egg be fresh, the light will freely pass through it and will be clearly observed from the mirror. As the egg grows older, the light will be excluded in proportion to its age, and after a certain period will' shut out the light altogether. By placing several eggs in position to be tested,
the freshest may be selected by comparison of their respective reflected lights.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The herein-described egg tester comprising a box, the top, sides and ends of which consist of la single piece of sheet metal folded upon itself at the top and bottom edges of the sides to form flanges, said top having openings in which the eggs may be seated, and provided with a sight opening adjacent to one' end thereof, a bottom of'sheet metal folded upon itself at the edges to provide anges and Ways, with the flanges of the name to this specification in the presence of blottoll slidabe Wthiihbottom flanges of two subscribing Witnesses. t e si es, a re ector s a e Within the Wa ,S of the bottom, and a cover sldable on the EVELYN LEISS' 5 top flanges of the sides for covering certain of said openings. l In testimony whereof I have signed my Witnesses:
W. W. HoLT, JOHN P. DAVIS.
