Be it. known that l, l'lARLAN E. HUNTS- iuznig a citizen of the limited Stoies of Amorin! vending at (level-and, in the county of (uyahoga and State of ()hio,.heve invented vviIH-iii lmw41ml useful Improvements in (lmwfihell lmrkets; and I- hereby declare thef llowing to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will unable fliliPlS skilledfn the art to which it pm'tains to make and use the same. I
This im'w-ntion rrlat$ to new and useful improvements in rlam'shell buckets ancl'op- (rating zueuhmaism therefor especially adapted for handling iron-ore and similar mat/rial.
()ne ohject. of this invention is to provide a bunkerof this: vharaoter which will be simple in ('onstrurtion, durable and which will have a very large reach or stretch in comparison to itsv height when open.
.s\ further ohjurhof my invention is'to provide a bucket which while having a good dinning action will also be. able to dispose'of its load very quickly.
My invent-ion therefore consists in the now and in'iproverl means for operatively connecting the arms whivh suspend the front and rear vnrla of the-swoops and applying powvr thereto.
The bucket. oomprisws two scoops or trays which when brought together form a single eptanle for the reception of the material which is to he. handled. swoop is suspended hy a pair of arnia and for the sake of uonrenivnro of desrription the arms sw-nred near the Putting edge of the swoops or trays will l e termed the front arms and the arms secured near the opposite end of the scoops will he temnml the rear arms. The rear arms of eat-h -swoop are formed considerably long r than the front arms and the same supporting shaft The upper ends of the front arms of em-h scoop are conm-rted to the. rear arms by means of a pair of l nks or lever arms which are operatiw-ly connected at their upper ends to the upper ends of the front arms and are fllll'l'fllfifid at a point, intermediate of their ends onthe rear arms at a point i n-termeuiate of the ends of said rear arms. The lower ends" of thetwo pa in of lever arms are operatively eonnectiwl together and are also operatively connected to the upper ends of the rear arms by meansof' a cable: heroine/Mr termed the Each end of ear-hopening cable,.;ind the lower ends of thairiro D pairs of front arms are operatively connect) ed by means of a closing cable In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of? a bucket: embod in; my invention in. its slow-d position. Flg. 2 is an end eievat'ion of'the some. Fig. 3- is a side elevation ohowing the bucket open,
Agnin referring to the (Iraings 1 and 2' repres nt the trays or swoops which'togethez' form the rereptaclefor holding the, material which is hem eveavated.
are suspende two: pairs of straighfi arms,
one pair of: which; 4', extends to the rear end' of the scoop 1 and the other pair, 5, extendsto the rear-end of the scoop 2 and pivotally are secured thereto by shairs 6 and 7 respectively. To the. sides of the respective; scoops From a shaft 3- meansof bolts 11 and- 12 respectively. These arms are preferably otl'set at their lower ends so that heaves mounted on the outside of saidarms will not project beyond the sides of the said swoops; A shaft 13 extends'beliven] the-pair of rear arms 4 and a shaft 14 extends hetiveV-en the pair of rear armsfi, and on oaoh shaftis fulrrumeda pair of links or lever arms, indicated as 15 and 16. These leverarms are-fulrrmned at: a point between their centers and theirnppor ends so that the longor ends of snarl leverarms extend (l0wn-.
wardly when the hurkot is'in' its closed position. The upper'ends of the pair of lever arms 1:; are pivotally connected lo-the upper end of the pair of front arms 9 by means of bolts 17 amlthe upper ends of the pair of lover arms 16 are pivotally ronnected to the upper and of the pair of front arms 10 byv hulls IS. The lower ends of the said pairs of lever arms- 15 and 16 are operatively connvoted together by means of a shaft 1 .On
theshaft- 19 are mountvd a pair 'of sheaves '20; A shaft :21 extends between the lower ends. of t-he pair'of front arms 9 and projects l'iey-ondrach arm. and on the projeoting poi tionof said shaft, at each on. is mounteda sheave A shaft to extends between the lower ends of the fame pair ofarnis 10 and projects beyond eacli arm', and on the proget-tingportion of saidshafi, at each and. is
mounted a sheave 24. The sheaves '22 and 24 are prefimlbly provided with'gaard waning:
251036 28 nespectirelv which pnevenlgthe c;
also protect the sheaves from the material hiCll is being excavated. At each end of the shaft 3 outside of the arms is arranged a swinging pulley or guide-sheave 27,'and on said shaft inside of the arms are hung a pair of swinging pulleys or guide-sheaves 28. A pair of opening cables 30 and a pair of closing cables iii are provided, one opcnin cable and one closing cable hein r o )erutive y conncctcd at each side of the bucitet so that the bucket will hun evenly. Each opening cable 30 is secure to the main shaft 3, preferablv by means of the end thereof being s liccd to the frame of a sheave 28 and is t ion carried down and around a sheave 20 on the shaft 19 and then up through a guide sheave .28 on the shaft One end of each closing cable is secured to the guard casing 26 of a sheave '24 and is then carried around a sheave 22 and then around said sheave 24 and up through the guide sheave .27.
The operation 01 the bucket is as follows:--A pull on the opening cables will draw the lower ends of thelcver arms and the up )er ends of the rear arms toward each at or causing the lower ends of the rear arms to swing out until the said arms assume a very wide angle, also-the upper ends of the lever arms will .u. the same time swing out and downwardly shoving down the trout arms on the respective scoops thereby tilting the scoops until they stand approximately at a right angle to the position they occupied in the closed position of the bucket. When it is desired to close the bucket it is only neces' sary to slacker: the openin cables and then the pull on the rinsing caliies will draw the front ends of the scoops together through the material which is to be excavated, and wnile the front ends of the scoops are being pulled together the action of the lever arms will drum o the front cnds of the scoops thereby quic \ly changing the position of the scoops from vertical to horizontal so that the material will readily enter the scoops thereby avoiding.' all unnecessary waste of power in closing the bucket.
What i claim is,-
